This is a wonderfully well-written piece. Very informative. I had the pleasure of visiting the Vancouver Maritime Museum, where they exhibit the St. Roch, the first ship to circumnavigate North America and the second vessel to traverse the Northwest Passage. Climbing aboard the schooner, I felt rather claustrophobic in its cramped interior and could only imagine what it must've been like to be sailing in the lands of ice and snow so long ago. It was rather interesting how the mess hall and the kitchen were designed in a way that kept dishes and utensils from moving about. It made sense given the motions of the ship while sailing.

Thanks for the information about St. Roch. It must have been a great experience to move aboard this schooner. However, However, I can also understand the claustrophobic attacks, it must be pretty cramped in there.
I have already had claustrophobic feelings seeing the film "Das Boot", which takes place in 1941 and shows the experiences of a German submarine crew during the battle of the Atlantic. It's completely unimaginable for me how one can stand it there for a longer time.
