Those who are following my stories of Route 40 that I traveled by motorcycle in 2015 can access each of the stages through the references with links and images found at the end of this post.

But starting today, when we are averaging the middle of the journey, I have decided to intersperse between each stage some stories and impressions of sites and places that I have taken the opportunity to visit.

I have seen them as I pass by, I have crossed the signs indicating their location and, sometimes, I have had the time at my disposal to take a brief tour and learn a little more about them.

Today I am going to talk about a very little known natural reserve in Argentina: the Payunia Nature Reserve, also known as the Payén.

The reserve is a protected natural area located in the south of the province of Mendoza. And it is full of volcanoes. In fact, there is no region in the world with these characteristics and with so many volcanoes in sight.

Route 40, also called Libertador General San Martín, is a legendary place to travel by car, motorcycle or hitchhiking.

And today I show you some photos that for reasons of time and space I did not show you at that time I did not show you when I did the route of the 9th stage entitled The great journey of route 40 by motorcycle from north to south: the ninth stage from San Rafael to Malargüe.

The gateway to the ** Reserve of Payunia or Payén is the Rio Grande ** that runs through an open crack in the middle of the plain.

As you advance, the mountains become gigantic.

The vehicles that are seen traveling on roads and dirt roads are only points in the immensity of the landscape.

A landscape that is changing at every step.

From time to time, footprints are seen on the slopes that reveal some human activity.

Guanacos and volcanoes with flattened tips so different from the volcanoes that we are used to seeing observe us like shadowy characters.

The sign indicates that one of is entering the zone of the volcanoes, orida, inhospitable, spectral.

The crater or caldera of the Payún Matrú volcano -the largest- has a diameter of 9 kms in diameter and a lagoon inside the volcano.

Its name has two different meanings. In the Mapuche language it means "snitch beard" and in the Pehuenche language it derives from payén (copper)
