I did see the argument you had on the GEMS forum; there have been things said about these generic communities that give out big votes before if you use their tags. I personally wish the tags would disappear, and those big curation groups could maybe target some of the major focused communities. I still like the idea of communities but it needs to develop more.
I see GEMS all the time in the #introducemyself area, how do they know about GEMS, OCD, BDVOTER if the are real new people? I ignore them if they use those tags, I'm after real newbies that have not been pre-primed about how to get big votes.

You bring up a very good point that I have not thought about before, but then I also wonder how do they find the #introducemyself tag in the first place? I think it would be a good idea to advertise that tag during the signup process.
I did an intro post over 2 years ago, but I had done around 6 other posts by then. It was something I picked up on.
