Witnessing Gyrfalcon
The other day, while in the car having a conversation with my husband about our lives, I suddenly saw a beautiful white figure with a striking face flying in front of me.
Then, I watched as a magnificent bird dived into the vast field. Its vivid white body was accented with light and white feathers with slightly light brown spots, and its small face had the prettiest eyes.
My husband identified it as a gyrfalcon. I’ve seen falcons in this area before, but never this type.
It was a breathtaking moment. Unfortunately, I couldn’t capture a photo in time, but it was stunning. Everything seemed to freeze except for the gyrfalcon, even though I was moving in the car.
The bird appeared to be female, though I wasn’t certain. Its body was incredibly smooth, a pure cream-white color. The abdomen looked strong and well-fed, and its feathers appeared exceptionally healthy.
When it dived, it looked massive. Upon researching, I found that the gyrfalcon is the largest falcon, with a wingspan of about 110–160 cm (43–63 in) and a body length of 48–65 cm (19–26 in). Its coloration varies from white to gray and dark brown, with white morphs being the rarest and most striking. The one I saw must have been around 150 cm or larger, and it was definitely white.
Gyrfalcons are rare winter visitors in my area, sometimes spotted from November to March, especially along the coast and in open fields. I feel incredibly lucky to have seen one.
Spiritually, the gyrfalcon symbolizes power, endurance, and vision. It represents leadership, wisdom, and resilience, encouraging clarity and focus. In Norse and Indigenous traditions, it is linked to strength and survival.
Perhaps it was a sign of strength and power, especially during this harsh winter. The temperatures have been freezing, and the wind has been relentless.
The gyrfalcon seemed to embody the possibility of possibilities. I hope it remains safe and finds enough food until spring. I imagine it will migrate to a warmer place soon. This fleeting encounter was truly special.
I hope it returns next season and flies before me again! I can’t forget its beautiful eyes and majestic wings. In a way, I appreciate that I didn’t get the chance to take a photo. It made the moment even more vivid in my memory.
Whenever I see rare animals in North America, I often don’t have a camera with me. When I saw vultures in the U.S., I was in the middle of a hike and couldn’t take a picture. When a groundhog appeared near my porch, my phone wasn’t nearby. Yet, I remember these encounters so clearly. Sometimes, it’s nice to see things through my own eyes, without any filters.
That said, I still wish I could take nice photos for my blog! This time, I used an AI generator to create an image of the gyrfalcon, but I also took an icy winter photo a couple of days ago. Hopefully, this winter storm will pass soon.

シロハヤブサを目撃する
先日、車を走行中に主人と世間話をしていたときのことです。突然、とても美しい何かが目の前を横切りました。
それは、ものすごい勢いで野原に向かってダイブしていく鳥の姿でした。鮮やかな白い体で、少しだけ薄茶色模様が入った羽を広げ、小さな顔にかわいらしい目がはっきりと見えました。
主人が言うにはシロハヤブサらしいです。この辺りではときどきファルコンを見かけますが、この種類は初めて目にしました。
突然の出来事に言葉を失いました。残念ながら、あまりの速さだったため写真を撮る時間などありませんでした。まるで、そのシロハヤブサ以外のものが静止しているように感じました。車で走行中の自分はもちろん動いているのですが、止まっているような感覚でした。
おそらくメスだと思うのですが、はっきりとはわかりません。体のラインはとても滑らかで、それはそれはきれいなクリームホワイト色でした。お腹の部分は肉づきが良くて、健康的な体つきをしていました。羽もまたとても健康そうでした。
目の前をダイブしていった姿には呆気にとられました。家に帰ってから調べてみると、シロハヤブサはいちばん大きなファルコンらしいです。翼の全長はおよそ１１０ー１６０センチで、体長は４８ー６５センチくらいだそうです。羽色は白、グレー、ダークブラウンで、白色型もっとも珍しいらしいです。わたしが目撃したのは、おそらく１５０センチくらいの羽の全長でした。そして、確実に白色でした。
冬にシロハヤブサをこの辺りで見かけるのはかなり珍しいそうです。通常は北アメリカでは11月から3月にかけて海岸沿いや開けた野原で見かけることができるそうです。そんな珍しい光景を見ることができて、とてもラッキーです。
シロハヤブサのもつスピリチュアル的な意味は、力、持久力とビジョンの象徴だそうです。リーダーシップ、智慧、回復力、明晰さと集中力を促すらしいです。北欧や先住民の言い伝えでは、強さと生存に結びついているとのことです。
確かに、こんな極寒の中、堂々と現れた姿は、まさしく力強さを象徴していると思いました。気温がかなり下がり寒波が訪れています。
シロハヤブサは可能性を秘めているような感じがしました。十分な餌を見つけて春までなんとか耐え凌いでほしいと思います。もちろん、この地域にとどまるのではなく、温かい地域へと移動している途中なのだと思います。だからこそ、見かけることができたのはかなり貴重な体験でした。
また来年、同じ場所に戻ってきてほしいです。かわいらしいつぶらな瞳と豪華な羽が目に焼きついています。写真におさめる暇など全くありませんでしたが、かえって良かったと思っています。その分、詳細がしっかりと頭の中に残っています。
わたしが北アメリカで珍しい動物を見かけるときはいつも、カメラを持っていないことが多い気がします。アメリカでハゲタカを見た時は、ハイキングの途中だったので、写真を撮る余裕などありませんでした。家の前でグラウンドホッグ（ウッドチャック）を見かけた時も、スマホを持っていない時でした。ときどき、カメラのフィルターを通さずに、実際に自分の目でしっかりと観察するのは自分にとって大切なことなのだと思います。
ブログを書くときには、やっぱり実際の写真が欲しいなと思うのですが…。今回はAIでシロハヤブサの写真をつくりました。冬の寒そうな凍りついた写真は実際に近所で撮影したものです。早く寒波が過ぎ去ってほしいです。
