dannewton just finished a 9.26km run, that lasted for 55 minutes.
This run helped dannewton burn 680.0 calories.

Description from Strava:
Its been a busy old weekend, and what with my partner coming home for Christmas late on Friday night, and sorting out a list of other jobs (some for xmas, some not) it was a struggle to fit the running in.

But I did mostly manage it in the end.

First up was the 'long run on Saturday. I usually aim for 30km (or around about 3 hours). I had thought about heading down to Whisby again, but I was due to visit parents at 1pm. This meant I had to make sure I got up early on Saturday to give me time to run, and then change/shower and then walk over to parents.

Slightly annoyingly I had a poor nights sleep on Friday night, so I promptly slept in on Saturday. By the time I finally got moving on Saturday, I only had 2 hours to play with, so that was precisely what I did.

I chose to head out towards the village of Navenby and aimed to run for 60 minutes, and then turn and run back home again. The run itself was pleasant enough, and we had some lovely blue skies out there. When the watch hit 60 minutes, I was at 9.5km, and decided I was running at a good enough pace to keep going to 10km, and then with the 10km home that would make 20km in total

Not quite the 'long run' I wanted, but a decent run out nonetheless!

Once home, I had just enough time to get showered before heading to parents for lunch (a very tasty Chili)

For today (Sunday) we needed to pop into town for a couple of bits, and to finish off the xmas shopping. I was due to go for a shorter 10km run today, and I hoped to get that done in the morning.

As with Saturday, that didn't happen either, and I chose to spend a lazy morning with my partner instead. When we finally got up, the first task was to head out into town. My partner needed to pick a few things up, and I needed to get her present sorted (she'd asked for a jumper, but I can't be trusted to get the right one!)

Besides, it would be easier for her to try it on in the shop, then me chose the wrong size and have to swap it for the right size later...

I'm not usually in town this time of year, as I don't usually leave the present buying until this late, but I was surprised how quite it seemed. I was expecting chaos, but perhaps its slightly quieter on a Sunday?

Anyway, trip into town done, it was time to finish putting the decorations...

But first, I was determined to get out for a run today...

image.png

It was just a little one, and nice and easy along the bypass and back. It was just a zone 2 low heart rate plod... but I was slightly surprised by the pace, as it was the first time I've managed an average pace of less than 6min/km along that route.

image.png

Checking Strava for all the similar runs along that route, shows the big dip where I started the low heart rate running, and how even though I've kept the effort low, the pace has got quicker and quicker. This has taken approximately 5 months to get to this point, but I'm now almost the same speed/pace that I was before I started this, but with a much easier effort then it used to take.

At the beginning of it all, I was skeptical of this 'train slow to run fast' idea. Surely it can't be that simple to improve my running performance? Well, on this evidence, it appears it can be. And I guess that in the New Year, I will be keeping this up, and hopefully I'll keep seeing improvements.

Anyway, the important thing with the slow heart stuff is to be consistent, and to keep running as regularly as possible. Which means that even though I've not quite run as much as I wanted, I've still managed to get something done, and that will keep me on the right track to seeing the improvements I want to see. And it'll be interesting to see what next year brings :-

That reminds me... I could do with sitting and thinking what I'd like to achieve with running next year. Its all very well being consistent and improving, but I need some goals and/or races to test myself (and that'll help to keep me motivated too!)

About the Athlete: Living in the UK, I am an intermittent Runner, but always striving for more consistency. When I'm not training I can be found photographing insects or listening to really loud angry music (which is the best type of music obviously!)

Ooooh. Low heart rate training. Yes, yes, yes. So good.

I have been (half-arse) attempting this. I don't seem to be anywhere near as consistent as you but I'm definitely a fan of it now that I understand the theory. (Like you, I was skeptical until someone explained it well to me).

Let us know what goal you come up with! !LUV

Yep! It sounds really counter-intuitive, and almost 'too easy' doesn't it!

wait, so I just slow down the pace, and then I can run longer, more comfortably and eventually faster too?!

In a world of expensive gimmicks, and 'hacks' and downright silly marketing ploys, its actually quite refreshing :-)

er goals, goals, goals... I really need to think of some. Would like a race/event to aim for each season. February (winter, just) is the 7 hour race. I need one for late spring/early summer, and then one more for autumn.

I wanted to do 2023km in the year 2023, and annoyingly i think I'm gonna just fall short (i've got 200km to do in 2 weeks, which is technically doable but not sensible). Next year I plan on NOT getting injured for 3 months, which will help help with reaching 2024km in 2024. I also want to stay away from 'performance' goals. I'm not in a position to aim for a sub 4 hour marathon, or sub 45 minute 10k. I'd rather just keep training sensible, and keep aiming for improvements, and then the improved performance will come later almost as a secondary bonus.

But yes Races.... I'll need to do some research on that!

Have you got goals for 2024 (i don't like 'New Years Resolutions') but goals are good!

100% agree. Feel the same way about this and any time I find anything that supports my health that's free or crazy cheap I'm like, "what the?!"

2024km in 2024.

I like it!! I also like the idea of you NOT pushing to do 200km in the next two weeks... !LOL

That sounds wonderful and wise, brother. Very good. *Listens with an open heart.

I don't like NY resolutions either. Hmmm, goals. I did a post about goals the other day. Lemme go find it...
