"character building" is an excellent way of putting it. I always know that the people that are out there in inclement weather are the "hardcore" people and while I do not consider myself to be that, I like to be a member of that crew for a while. Sometimes I will fist bump with complete strangers when we are running in the rain, sort of a community sort of thing.

Definitely is a 'mutual respect' kinda thing when you pass a fellow runner out in the rain!
Besides, there's no knowing what the weather will be on race day, we may hope for good conditions, but there is always the potential for cold/wet weather, so you might as well practice for it
