Cycling - Complete bike tour of the Futalefú Hydroelectric Complex in Trevelin: a day with a lot of movement. / Vuelta completa en bicicleta por el Complejo Hidroeléctrico Futalefú en Trevelin: un día de bastante movimiento. 😃❤️

Besides walking a lot when I'm travelling, another thing I like to do is to rent a bike. I have one at home and after a few months away I miss it, so in order not to lose the habit and the stamina in my legs, every now and then I like to go out and cycle a bit. So far, in almost every town or small city I visited I found a good bike rental, and in Esquel the one who rented them also offered to be a guide. I liked this proposal as a way to do something different, and so together we went on a tour of the Futalefú Hydroelectric Complex, in the neighbouring city of Trevelin, in the province of Chubut 😃.

Además de caminar un montón por todos lados cuando estoy de viaje, otra de las cosas que me gusta hacer es alquilar una bicicleta. Tengo una en mi casa y después de algunos meses fuera la extraño, así que para no perder la costumbre ni la resistencia en las piernas, cada tanto me gusta salir a pedalear un poco. Hasta el momento, en casi todos los pueblos o pequeñas ciudades que visité encontré un buen alquiler de bicis, y en Esquel el que las alquilaba también se ofrecía como guía de paseo. Me gustó esta propuesta como para hacer algo diferente y así fue como juntos nos fuimos a recorrer un poco el Complejo Hidroeléctrico Futalefú, en la ciudad vecina de Trevelin, provincia de Chubut 😃.

The town of Esquel is more than 45 km from the hydroelectric complex in Trevelin and of course we didn't cycle all that. Well, my guide might have been able to do it but I clearly could not. After organising the reservation, we met up and drove down with the bikes, a short 40 minute ride. This ride is promoted on Instagram and the bike course rating was medium difficulty. By this time, I had done enough trekking and was feeling well enough to be able to do a ride of this demand 😃.

La ciudad de Esquel se encuentra a más de 45 km del Complejo Hidroeléctrico en Trevelin y por supuesto que no pedaleamos todo eso. Bueno, mi guía quizás si hubiera podido hacerlo pero yo claramente no. Después de organizar la reserva, nos reunimos y fuimos en auto llevando las bicicletas, en un pequeño viaje de más de 40 minutos. Este paseo está promocionado en Instagram y la clasificación del circuito de bicicleta era de dificultad media. Para ese momento, yo ya había hecho bastante trekking y me sentía bien como para poder hacer un paseo de esta exigencia 😃.

This hydroelectric dam has the particularity of being located in a beautiful area that is also organised as a park and is open to the general public. When we entered, all we had to say was that we were going for a bike ride and that was it. We left the car parked at the gate and from there we started our tour with a distance of approximately 20 km in a circular route that would take us back to this same point 😃.

Esta presa hidroeléctrica tiene la particularidad de estar ubicada en una zona hermosa que además, está organizada como un parque y está abierta al público en general. Cuando ingresamos, solo tuvimos que decir que íbamos a dar una vuelta en bicicleta y eso fue todo. Dejamos el auto estacionado en la puerta y desde ahí empezó nuestro recorrido con una distancia aproximada de 20 km en una ruta circular que nos devolvería a este mismo punto 😃.

There are several interesting places to stop within the dam complex, all of them very nice given the privileged location of the place. The main route is a vehicular road, partly paved and partly gravel, with a few trails to walk or take a detour with the bicycles. The first stop we made on our cycling day was at Los Pozones, a viewpoint overlooking the Futalefú River. From this place the view was incredible: a river of greenish water squeezed between rocks and bright vegetation. This stop had already surprised me and I had just started the tour ❤️.

Hay varios puntos interesantes para detenerse dentro del complejo de la presa, todos muy lindos dada la ubicación privilegiada del lugar. La ruta principal es un camino vehicular, por partes pavimentado y otras de ripio, con unos cuantos senderos para caminar o desviarse con las bicicletas. La primera parada que hicimos en nuestro día de bici fue en Los Pozones, un mirador hacia el Río Futalefú. Desde este lugar la vista era increíble: un río de agua verdosa encajonado ente piedras y vegetación brillante. Esta parada ya me había sorprendido y apenas comenzaba el recorrido ❤️.

After the crystal clear water pools, the second stop was at the dam wall. This wall has a height difference of 100 metres, and to reach it you have to climb a snail-shaped gravel road. My guide told me to be prepared for this stretch and that it was not necessary to do it without braking, but I was ready to challenge myself. The slope was not very steep and so there were 6 bends, so with patience and the bike in its lightest mode, I completed the whole way without getting off. When we got to the top, I couldn't believe I had the ability to climb all that. Even the guide was surprised 😂.

Después de los pozones de agua cristalina, la segunda parada era en el paredón de la represa. Este paredón tiene un desnivel de 100 metros, y para llegar hasta él es necesario subir un camino de ripio en forma de caracol. Mi guía me dijo que me preparara para este tramo y que no era necesario hacerlo sin frenar, pero yo estaba lista para desafiarme a mí misma. La pendiente no era muy pronunciada y por eso habían 6 curvas, así que con paciencia y la bici en su modo más liviano, completé todo el camino si bajarme. Cuando llegamos arriba, no podía creer que hubiese tenido la capacidad de subir todo eso. Incluso el guía se sorprendió 😂.

From the wall, the view was spectacular: on one side, the river and the bends to reach the top, and on the other, the big blue water reservoir with the snow-capped mountains in the background. It looked wonderful, and the weather was fine. After being up there for a while, we continued our walk with a little more ascent, and then went down a little to the Playa de los Palos, a shore full of small timbers dragged by the water. After the great effort on the snail, we take advantage of this stop to recover our energy and also to have lunch ❤️.

Desde el paredón, la vista era espectacular: hacia un lado, el río y las curvas para llegar hasta arriba, y del otro, el gran reservorio de agua azul con las montañas nevadas de fondo. Se veía maravilloso, y el día nos acompañaba con buen clima. Después de estar un rato ahí arriba, continuamos nuestro paseo con un poco más de subida, para luego bajar un poco hasta la Playa de los Palos, una costa llena de pequeñas maderitas arrastradas por el agua. Después del gran esfuerzo en el caracol, aprovechamos esta parada para recuperar energías y también para tomar nuestro almuerzo ❤️.

The third part of our tour was to go through the most technical part of the dam, where we could see the large pipe that transports the water to the engine room with the turbines, and a little further on, the transformers where the electricity is prepared for use. These works of engineering always end up surprising me because of all the planning that goes into them, and even more so in places like these and with these dimensions. This tour was great from start to finish 😃.

La tercera parte de nuestro recorrido fue pasar por la parte más técnica de la represa, en donde pudimos ver la gran tubería encargada de transportar el agua hasta la sala de máquinas con las turbinas, y un poco más adelante, los transformadores en donde se termina de preparar la energía eléctrica para su uso. Estas obras de la ingeniería siempre terminan sorprendiéndome por toda la planificación que tienen detrás y más aún en lugares como estos y con estas dimensiones. Este paseo fue genial de principio a fin 😃.

On the final stretch of our way back, we meet the Futalefu River again, but this time from another angle. The colour of this river is beautiful, regardless of the sun it looks greenish-bluish, which makes it a typical Patagonian landscape. We had almost completed our 20 km walk, but I could have gone on a little longer. This walk was very pleasant, and the guide also made it entertaining: I liked that he had this option in his services, because before this, I had never even heard of this place 😃.

Ya en la recta final de nuestra vuelta, nos encontramos nuevamente con el Río Futalefú pero esta vez desde otro ángulo. El color de este río es hermoso, independientemente del sol se ve verdoso azulado, lo que lo hace un paisaje patagónico típico. Ya casi completabamos nuestros 20 km de andar, pero yo hubiese podido seguir un poco más. Este paseo fue muy agradable, además de que el guía también lo hacía entretenido: me gustó que él tuviera esta opción en sus servicios, porque antes de esto, yo ni siquiera había escuchado hablar sobre este lugar 😃.

One thing I like about my travels is that even if I don't have anything that much planned, I always end up getting good things to do. This bike tour was more than I had imagined, and for it I paid about 20,000 ARS in the month of April ($16 USD approx). This price seemed more than right for everything we did, including the transfer to and from the city of Esquel. I enjoyed getting to know a bit more of Trevelin with this tour, and I also felt proud to have cycled all that without getting tired. I hope my fitness will last as long as possible 😅.

Algo que me gusta de mis viajes es que aunque no tenga nada tan planeado, siempre termino consiguiendo buenas cosas para hacer. Este paseo en bicicleta fue más de lo que había imaginado, y por él pagué unos 20.000 ARS en el mes de Abril ($16 USD aprox). Este precio me pareció más que bien para todo lo que hicimos, incluyendo el traslado ida y vuelta a la ciudad de Esquel. Me gustó haber conocido un poco más de Trevelin con este tour, y también me sentí orgullosa de haber pedaleado todo eso casi sin cansarme. Espero que mi buen estado físico dure lo máximo posible 😅.
