This past weekend was more than a bit of a whirlwind, but during a few hour time block yesterday I found myself engaged in conversations that made me think more than a bit about a couple of things: How we get ourselves into trouble by choosing to throw a fit and how we do ourselves an injustice by making up our minds about things despite never having experienced them.
I'll start with the second thought first.
I have a very intelligent friend whom I spend quite a bit of time with. I absolutely adore this person and admire them a great deal, as they have overcome adversity and a horrible upbringing. That said, as we were snacking on freshly baked cookies and discussing the state of the world, I got a first hand encounter with the whole the stories we tell ourselves about the world thing.
This person vehemently stated that they hated resorts and that all resorts were the same. Now, I am not a huge fan of resorts for a few reasons, but what struck me was the definitiveness of their statement. They were stating their opinion as fact. What made it even more interesting to me was that they had never been to a resort.
In response I started asking a few questions. How could one have an opinion about all resorts if they had never even attended one? Going to another country is a scary proposition, especially if the country has a culture that is nothing like yours. Sometimes it's better to dip your toe into the shallow safe end of the pool before you hit the Olympic diving board and the deep end.
As I began to ask questions and delve into the matter further, I noticed my friend began to become more defensive regarding their assertion about resorts. Instead of becoming equally defensive or offended, I stepped back and refined my approach. It's amazing what saying, I don't know, I totally hear what you are saying, this is my experience can do to the tone of a conversation.
For so much of my life I would try to soothe any conversation I was in so that a person would feel comfortable or validated, but in all honesty, that's kind of a cowardly way to be, or at the very least inauthentic. I am a big, massive, yuge believer in throwing yourself into uncomfortable situations and traveling because it's how you learn. There's nothing more humbling or exciting to discover there are different things in this world than what you know.
When it comes to the fit throwing part of my daily experience, let's just say that I absolutely have a bias when it comes to fit throwing. I despise fit throwing. More often than not it makes whatever is going on three hundred times worse. And that's not saying I have never thrown a fit, I know we all do on occasion, but what occurred last night was a good lesson about not smearing the poo sandwich you just caught on your clean face.
Long story short, a kid we know who just lost his girlfriend due to bad behavior, also go kicked out of his living situation due to his behavior. All of this sucks and I feel for the kid because his start to life hasn't been the greatest, as in most of the adults in his life weren't stable or abandoned him rather than fostered his growth and development.
But, when something bad happens to you, you get to choose how to process it. And crashing your truck off the side of the highway because you are driving like a fit throwing rage maniac just adds to your not so great day. Not only that, your expression of anger could have harmed others besides yourself. Fit throwing can kill. Thankfully no one besides a truck was injured in the fit throwing exhibition, but after a long day filled with non-flexible thinking examples, let's just say that I think I will spend today with plants and animals...

A good reason to travel there with a native, instead of part of some tourist group. That's what I did the first time I re-visited my homeland after leaving at the age of, like, three.

Yeah, that's me... and my sister... ask me how she got me to go skydiving, it's a bit of a funny story.

Interesting... you're more like my sister's husband than like either of us.
Sadly, we're ruled by people who get their way by throwing fits, and unlike JT, I'm not talking about fist-shaking politicians, I'm talking about the petty tyrants like Karen from HR (having a friend named Karen, I kinda feel bad for using that meme), obnoxious neighbours, and abusive relatives, ya know, squeaky wheel something something. Sometimes, it's just easier to get out of their way than try to help these people pacify their mammaries.
Of course, having been abused for most my life without even realising it, I have a different way of dealing with the malcontents in my life, but I wouldn't suggest it.
I love traveling with natives! There’s just so much more of an authentic experience when you are with people who know.
It’s probably easier to travel to new places for me in some regards due to how much I moved as a kid. I went to 4 highschools, so being thrown into the new was and is what I know, but I can do appreciate how terrifying it can feel to be suddenly immersed into the new.
I have a cousin named Karen and a good friend who shares the name, and I feel for them to be labeled by proxy, but truly our society is filled with entitled harpies of all the genders that fit the meme stereotype. Most of the time I just redirect them, but the niceness stops when they are harming others with their shicaca.
Speaking of fecal matter, I’m truly sorry you were treated in that manner. As someone who’s still rewiring those damaged pathways, let’s just say you have all my condolences and empathy. Abuse sucks pickled gonads!
Thank you for the lolz 😆👆
And I gotta say, I’m dying to know about the skydiving incident😁

Right, so aviation is something of a popular past-time in my family (maybe that's the French blood, IDK). I first got behind the controls of an aeroplane when I was 11... still don't have my damn pilot's license, but hopefully I'll get my life sorted soon and get back in the sky, but I digress. My sister got into skydiving around the same time (she's six years older than me), but we didn't really start hanging out again until I was in college, and that's when she started bugging me to join her. I responded, "don't be daft, why would I jump out of a perfectly good plane?"
This continued for a while until one day on my way home, when I got really sick of the guy behind me riding my arse, so I pulled off to the side of the road... into a massive boulder which flipped my car over. I thought to myself, "that wasn't so bad, I think I'll take P[redacted]a up on her offer!" It was fun, but it gets boring after only about half a dozen times, which is why some people (big sis included) get into even crazier things like wingsuit flying... though BASE (building, antenna, span, earth) jumping is so daft that it scares even her.
Wow.
I love that flying through the air in a car inspired you to fly through the air sans craft of any kind, that was the best kind of origin story.
I think what probably ruined me for skydiving was flying for the first time and mostly in Alaska. It was bad enough in the plane, but then again maybe it wouldn't be as bad outside it lol. The older I get the less I am worried about the scariness factor, but I gotta say, those squirrel suits intrigue me, BASE not so much, and holy wow you and your sis are hardcore, I love it. 😆
I'm actually very fond of planes and flying, especially old DC-3's. When I lived in the logging camp they would deliver our fuel with one, the pilot was so crazy we could hit him with rocks if we timed it right and he would brush the trees on take off just to thrill us heathens. Then again, he was also grounded later for cutting off an Alaska Airlines 737 while taking rich people moose hunting, but I digress. Looking forward to licensed pilot Kaja adventure pics😊

It seems we have been pondering along similar lines. Sweeping statements without some kind of substance to support them are usually a sign of a bad argument. Coincidentally, I am making !PIZZA tonight!
Ooh, I want some JT DF !PIZZA!!! And boo for bad arguments, I like creative ones lol!
Yeah, throwing a fit really does get you nowhere, but deeper into the hole you are digging...
I love the way you phrase things my friend😊 I’d rather put plants in holes than myself .😁

Fortunately, most of us throw fewer fits as we age. Children, though....my grandkids are really good fit-throwers!!
