In all this months travelling I had the opportunity to do a lot of great things at the right time. This travel path was opened and planned a little as I went along, slowly but always with the desire to keep moving. However, no matter how much we plan things, sometimes unexpected situations can change our plans and that's when we have to improvise a bit. Luckily, the times I had to do it, everything fell into place and worked out well for me, allowing me to get to places I hadn't even thought of and collecting a lot of incredible anecdotes 💕.
En todo este tiempo viajando tuve la oportunidad de hacer muchas cosas geniales en el momento justo. Este camino de viaje lo fui abriendo y planeado un poco a medida que avanzaba, lento pero siempre con ganas de seguir moviéndome. Sin embargo, por más que planifiquemos mucho las cosas, a veces las situaciones inesperadas pueden cambiarnos los planes y ahí es cuando toca improvisar un poco. Por suerte, las veces que me tocó hacerlo todo se acomodó y salió bien para mí, permitiéndome llegar a lugares que ni siquiera había pensado y recolectando un montón de anécdotas increíbles 💕.
In order to be able to have a long and sustained trip at low cost, what I was doing was exchanging work for accommodation in different hostels in Argentina. As I became more experienced at this, it became easier to find the next place to visit. So far, all these voluntary jobs I have done have gone smoothly. This arrangement is by word of mouth but requires engagement on both sides, both from the owner of the establishment and the volunteer who is going to cover a shift and expects at least a place to sleep in return. Generally speaking, this arrangement has that implicit responsibility and is respected within the volunteer world. As for the duration of these exchanges, they usually last from 2 weeks to a few months if possible. The idea is not to stay in the same place for so long, but to spend a few weeks there and then look for a new destination to continue the nomadic route 😃.
Para poder tener un viaje largo y sostenido en el tiempo a bajo costo, lo que estuve haciendo fue intercambiando trabajo por alojamiento en distintos hosteles de Argentina. A medida que fui teniendo más experiencia en esto, me fue siendo más sencillo encontrar el siguiente lugar para visitar. Hasta el momento, todos estos trabajos voluntarios que hice habían transcurrido sin problemas. Este arreglo es de palabra pero requiere compromiso de ambas partes, tanto del dueño del establecimiento como del voluntario que va a cubrir un turno de trabajo y espera a cambio al menos un lugar para dormir. En lineas generales, este acuerdo tiene esa responsabilidad implícita y es respetada dentro del mundo de los voluntariados. En cuanto a la duración de estos intercambios, los mismos suelen durar desde 2 semanas hasta algunos meses si es posible. La idea es no quedarse tanto tiempo en el mismo lugar, sino algunas semanas para recorrerlo y después buscar un nuevo destino para continuar la ruta nómade 😃.

In my case, I try to have a bit organised my schedule with several successive volunteer placements, to ensure my stay during the time I want to be travelling. During the month of August I had the opportunity to do two volunteering assignments, one in Catamarca and the other in Salta, and I was looking forward to continue going up to the north of Argentina. Ten days before the end of my volunteering in Salta I had arranged to go to another one in the province of Jujuy, and everything seemed perfect as always: we arranged for me to go to a hostel in the town of Humahuaca, one of the most touristic places in that province, on the 11st of September. This meant moving more than 400 km from where I was and taking two different buses, so I chose to do it the day before to sleep one night in between and continue the route the next day. BUT just an hour after getting on the first bus I got a message from the owner of the hostel I was going to, telling me that she would not be able to receive me and that the volunteering was suspended 🙃.
En mi caso, trato de tener un poco organizado mi cronograma con varios voluntariados sucesivos, para asegurarme mi estadía durante el tiempo que quiero estar viajando. Durante el mes de agosto tuve la oportunidad de hacer dos voluntariados, uno en Catamarca y otro en Salta, y me encontraba con ganas de seguir subiendo al norte de Argentina. Diez días antes de terminar mi voluntariado en Salta había organizado para ir a otro en la provincia de Jujuy, y todo parecía perfecto como siempre: arreglamos para que el 11 de septiembre me presente en un hostel del pueblo de Humahuaca, uno de los más turísticos dentro de esa provincia. Esto implicaba moverme más de 400 km desde donde estaba y tomar dos buses diferentes, por lo que elegí hacerlo el día anterior para dormir una noche en medio y continuar la ruta al día siguiente. PERO justo una hora después de subirme al primer bus me llega un mensaje de la dueña del hostel al que me estaba dirigiendo, en donde me decía que no me iba a poder recibir y que el voluntariado quedaba suspendido 🙃.
Receiving this message made me have a kind of panic attack. It was the first time I had ever had an exchange cancelled and just when I had already left the previous exchange. At first I got a bit angry, I didn't cry but I almost did, and then I calmed down because I knew that everything was going to work out. Of course I am very cautious and I always have money saved in case I have to pay for my stay as a normal guest. The problem was that I was already going to the city of Salta without any plans and I had to figure out what to do. Then it occurred to me to send a message to the Dutch guest with whom I had been in that city five days before, to ask him if he was still in the area and to my good fortune he replied that he was still there 😃.
Recibir este mensaje me hizo dar una especie de ataque de pánico. Es la primera vez que me cancelaban un intercambio y justo cuando yo ya me había ido del intercambio anterior. Primero me enojé un poco, no lloré pero casi, y después me calmé porque supe que todo iba a solucionarse. Por supuesto que yo soy muy precavida y siempre tengo dinero guardado por si en algún momento me toca pagar mi estadía como un huésped normal. El problema era que yo ya estaba yendo a la ciudad de Salta sin ningún plan y tenía que definir qué hacer. Entonces se me ocurrió enviarle un mensaje al huésped holandés con quién había estado justamente en esa ciudad cinco días antes, para preguntarle si seguía por la zona y para mi suerte me respondió que aún estaba ahí 😃.
That he was still in Salta brought me immediate relief because at least I had someone I knew to hang out with while I sorted out my uncertainty about what to do in the next few days. When I finally arrived in the city, we met up and he held me back, bringing calm to how nervous I was. He told me that we could spend the night as I had planned and that tomorrow we would see what we would do. The previous weekend we had spent four days together where we had had a lot of fun, and seeing each other again was like being reunited with an old friend. The next day we woke up and while we were having breakfast, I asked him about his plans for the next few weeks and he told me that his idea was to go and see a bit of Bolivia. That's when I got an idea 😃.
Que él aún siguiera por ciudad de Salta me trajo un alivio inmediato porque al menos tenía a alguien conocido para ir a pasar el rato mientras solucionaba mi incertidumbre sobre qué hacer en los próximos días. Cuando al fin llegué a la ciudad, nos reunimos y él me contuvo, trayendo calma a lo nerviosa que estaba. Me dijo que podíamos pasar la noche tal como yo había planeado y que mañana veríamos qué hacíamos. El fin de semana anterior habíamos pasado cuatro días juntos en donde nos habíamos divertido mucho, y vernos de nuevo fue como reunirse con un viejo amigo. Al día siguiente nos despertamos y mientras desayunabamos, le pregunté sus planes para las siguientes semanas y él me dijo que su idea era ir a conocer un poco de Bolivia. Ahí fue cuando se me encendió una idea 😃.
At that point, I no longer had any definite plans: having cancelled the volunteering I had planned to do, I had three weeks left until the next exchange I had organised months before. I was free to do anything, and that's when I proposed that we travel together during that time. He had a car and a free place, and I had enough money saved up to allow me to spend three weeks on holiday. At first it seemed like an impulsive idea and I thought I was already harassing him too much, but he said he agreed. Anyway, we both said that if for some reason, either of us didn't feel comfortable, we could say so and we would go our separate ways with no hard feelings. Under that deal, we set out on our walk together on 11 September and ended it on 2 October 2024 ❣️.
En ese momento, yo ya no tenía ningún plan definido: al cancelarme el voluntariado que pensaba hacer, me sobraban tres semanas hasta el siguiente intercambio que había organizado meses atrás. Me encontraba libre para hacer cualquier cosa, y fue ahí cuando le propuse viajar juntos en ese tiempo. Él tenia auto y un lugar libre, y yo tenía dinero ahorrado suficiente como para permitirme estar tres semanas como de vacaciones. Al principio me pareció una idea impulsiva y pensé que ya lo estaba acosando demasiado, pero me dijo que estaba de acuerdo. De todos modos, ambos dijimos que si por alguna razón, alguno de los dos no se sentía cómodo, que podía decirlo y continuaríamos nuestros caminos por separado sin rencores. Bajo ese trato, emprendimos nuestro paseo juntos el 11 de septiembre y lo terminamos el 2 de octubre de 2024 ❣️.
I was nervous but excited: after almost a year travelling alone, it was the first time I would be travelling with someone. No doubt having a car and sharing the cost of accommodation was a benefit for both of us, plus we enjoyed each other's company. That all sorted out after breakfast, we set off for the north of Argentina, with the idea of making our way to Bolivia in the next few days. I was also excited about this because I had never left my country for more than 24 hours, so the adventure would be complete. We decided to take route 9 from Salta to Jujuy in order to visit the yungas, a super green and jungle-like area of this province. I didn't know the yungas either, so our first day together had already begun with new discoveries 😃.
Yo estaba nerviosa pero emocionada: después de casi un año viajando sola, era la primera vez que viajaría con alguien. Sin dudas tener auto y repartir los gastos de los alojamientos era un beneficio para ambos, además de que disfrutábamos mutuamente la compañía del otro. Arreglado todo eso después de desayunar, emprendimos nuestro camino hacia el norte de Argentina, con la idea de llegar hasta Bolivia en los siguientes días. También estaba emocionada por eso porque yo nunca había salido de mi país por más de 24 horas, por lo que la aventura sería total. Decidimos tomar la ruta 9 desde Salta hasta Jujuy para poder visitar las yungas, un espacio super verde y selvático de esta provincia. Tampoco conocía las yungas, así que nuestro primer día de paseo juntos ya había empezado con nuevos descubrimientos 😃.
As we moved miles and miles north on the map, I often wondered whether going to another country with a stranger was a good idea. But there again I allowed myself to accept that it was a decision made in my heart, so I was going to go with it without thinking so rationally. Besides, everything had been perfect for it to happen: the cancellation of my volunteering had seemed terrible to me the day before, but it was exactly what allowed me to continue the journey in a different way and with good company. After all, the door that had been closed to me had opened a much better one ❤️.
A medida que avanzábamos kilómetros y kilómetros hacia el norte en el mapa, muchas veces me pregunté si irme a otro país con un desconocido era buena idea. Pero ahí nuevamente me permití aceptar que esa fue una decisión tomada con el corazón, así que iba a hacerle caso sin pensar tan racionalmente. Además, todo se había dado perfecto como para que suceda: que me hayan cancelado el voluntariado me había parecido terrible el día anterior, pero fue justamente lo que me permitió continuar el viaje de otra forma y con buena compañía. Al fin de cuentas, la puerta que se me cerró hizo que se abriera otra muchísimo mejor ❤️.

Hola! Si, este tipo de intercambios existe en todo el mundo. Incluso los puedes buscar en apps como worldpackers o workaway, es una buena forma de viajar a bajo costo.
