Hello dear friends, lovers of architecture and design. After a few days off from my blog, I am happy to come back and share with you some pictures of one of the oldest churches in the city of Merida, Venezuela.
It is the Our Lady of Carmen church, a really beautiful architectural work, which is located in the central area, a few meters from the Bolivar square. I have wanted to write about this church for a long time, but every time I passed by this street it was closed. Fortunately, a few days ago, the great opportunity that I had been waiting for presented itself and I was able to see the interior of this religious center for the first time.
I like the facade of this church very much, it is the result of a combination of classic details that together achieve a work of great architectural value. The facade is narrow, but its symmetry and great height, enhance each element that makes up this design. Its bell tower is formed by three arches that culminate with a beautiful sculpture of the Virgin of Carmen in white.
In the central part we find a shield, framed in beautiful reliefs. On each side, there are two more sculptures, but I do not know what they represent.
The plaster moldings of its facade were made with great dedication to create that visual harmony that makes me love churches so much. My favorite part of them are the loops that we find on each side of the columns. In the middle of them, we have bronze plaques that give us valuable information about the church and thanks to them we can infer its age. This plaque was placed during the celebration of the first centenary of the Sociedad Nuestra Señora del Carmen from 1851 to 1961.
On the other hand, the lateral façade is simpler, with elements of colonial architecture. On the right side we have an arched side door, very similar to the main one. While the other facades are limited by other buildings.
Upon entering the interior of the church, we find a simple enclosure, full of calm and warmth, consisting of a single nave, on a wooden trapezoidal roof, from which hang beautiful circular lamps. The church has little natural lighting, despite the beautiful stained glass windows on the side wall.
The altar is beautiful, here we discovered paintings that are a great work of art. I regret that it is not very well visible in the photos. Out of respect for the people who were praying, I did not get too close. One of the things I liked most about the altar is that it is framed with four Greek columns supporting a beautiful arch of angels.
At the back we find the choir area, built in wood, where we get a better view of the coat of arms that we see in the central part of the facade. This entire structure is built in wood: the columns, the mezzanine and the spiral staircases.
From the age of the church, I can intuit that it was built in tapia, the method most used in colonial times in this area.
In front of the church, we find the Plazoleta Colón, a beautiful square, where we can remember about history, our origins and the great discovery of America. This square was built in homage to Christopher Columbus. Unfortunately, I found an abandoned square; the iron benches are in terrible condition. And the main bust of the sculpture is simply not there.
However, I found this sculpture very interesting and wanted to share it with you. It is a large pedestal in the shape of a truncated pyramid built in concrete in gray work or clean work, as we usually call it in my country. In each of its faces, are carved in relief, the ship of Christopher Columbus and textually says that it was built on October 12, 1892 to celebrate the four hundredth anniversary of the discovery of America.
On the other side, a world map is carved in relief and below it we find this phrase: “The world was narrow and you widened it, grateful humanity blesses you”.
On the other two faces, we find carved a shield and some indigenous characters. I found it interesting that the text is in Italian and from what I can perceive it is the translation of the phrases found on the other faces.
A square that, with a little love, can become a great point of interest, since it represents a great important date for America. In addition, it is located in the heart of the city, in front of an architectural jewel. I hope it will be restored soon, so we can continue to enjoy it.
If one day you visit Merida, do not hesitate to visit the church of Nuestra Señora del Carmen, which is also surrounded by other sites of great tourist and architectural interest.

Thank You
Both outside and inside this temple is a true architectural jewel.
Yes, it also has great cultural and historical value for the region. Thank you very much.
Greetings dear Doris. @doriangel
I looked at the statues on the facade of the church and they look like monks or priests, perhaps people who collaborated with the construction of the church.
The ties are unique, and their interior is sober and solemn.
As for the pedestal, it is nice, I like the carved figures it has, if I saw that material I would think it was marble 😅🤣 and I tried to translate the words in Italian but they don't make sense in Spanish, it must be an old Italian, I don't know. Enjoy reading.
Saludos querida Doris. @doriangel
The exterior facade of this historic church strikes me the most. It clearly catches one's attention due to its combination of classical details that produce that eclectic look. Congrats on your eventual exploration of its interior design after a long while. It was truly worth the wait. This landmark is certainly an impressive marvel of heritage architecture @doriangel! ☺️

It's a very beautiful structure. Your detailed post about it's architecture is amazing and informative!
Thank you very much for your appreciation, it is a great work indeed. Greetings.
The facade of the church has a nice design, the sculptures at the top look beautiful as well as the ribbons that adorn both sides of the door, the oval shape of the frame looks very nice and elegant, it resembles the old mirrors, no doubt the church is a great architectural jewel both for its interior and exterior design, thank you for sharing your visit to this outstanding church in the State of Merida.
Happy weekend!
Undoubtedly the facade has many elements to appreciate, it is beautiful. Thank you very much. Happy beginning of the week.
