Last Friday, February 18, my wife and I were sharing with the Guerra Figueroa family, a friendly family that life gave us, a family that we value for its high human quality, a spiritual family with which we are united with sacred ties of brotherhood family of the soul based on deference and decorum, family of heart, true friends that we admire; wonderful beings with whom we share and whom we love. After the brief introduction, I invite you to take a quick tour of Venezuelan colonial architecture, which takes its first steps from the 16th century when Venezuela begins to be a dependent colony of the Spanish Empire. Observing some architectural details we realize that civil, military and religious constructions are modest, discreet, simple and most do not exhibit ostentatious artistic elements as in other parts of the world, the cause of this was the impossibility of using expensive materials. and the lack of skilled labor. The socioeconomic conditions of the country did not offer possibilities that would allow majestic constructions.

Después de la breve introducción les invito a hacer un rápido recorrido por la arquitectura colonial venezolana, la cual da sus primeros pasos a partir del siglo XVI cuando Venezuela comienza a ser colonia dependiente del Imperio español. Al observar algunos detalles arquitectónicos nos damos cuenta que las construcciones de caracter civil, militar y religiosa son modestas, discretas, sencillas y la mayoría no exhiben elementos artísticos ostentosos como en otras partes del mundo, la causa de esto fue la imposibilidad de utilizar materiales costosos y la falta de mano de obra calificada. Las condiciones socioeconómicas del país no ofrecían posibilidades que permitieran construcciones majestuosas.

Venezuelan civil architecture, from the colonial era, is characterized by presenting popular housing loaded with simplicity of its forms, without many scenographic effects, or great artistic finishes. The use of some materials typical of the area such as wood, bitter cane, adobe, rammed earth and clay, were essential elements in the construction.

La arquitectura civil venezolana, de la época colonial, se caracteriza por presentar viviendas populares cargadas de simplicidad de sus formas, sin muchos efectos escenográficos, ni grandes acabados artísticos. El empleo de algunos materiales propios de la zona como la madera, la caña amarga, el adobe, la tapia y la arcilla, fueron elementos primordiales en la construcción.

Observing the historic centers of Venezuelan cities (urban areas) we realize that they present, in many cases, the same design: a rectangular or square plaza and around it the Church, the family houses, the civil headquarters, some public institution, shops and the four cobbled streets that characterize and define the block.

Al observar los cascos históricos de las ciudades venezolanas (zonas urbanas) nos damos cuenta que presentan, en muchos casos, el mismo diseño: una plaza rectangular o cuadrada y a su alrededor la Iglesia, las casas de familia, la jefatura civil, alguna institución pública, comercios y las cuatro calles empedradas que la caracterizan y definen la manzana.

Most family houses have a main entrance that faces the main street, large openings (doors and windows) that let in natural light; the main entrance is followed by the hall; a long corridor that connected the entrance with the interior of the house, the open central patio and the rooms located around it. The structural design of the gabled roof is accompanied by large eaves that allowed the use of rainwater, which was stored in large barrels, buckets or barrels. The covered corridor that protrudes from the construction is also characteristic. The number of decorative figures that were put on the construction depended on the economic power of each family.
In conclusion, bahareque, clay and mud, bitter cane, large wooden beams, stones, tiles... among other materials, predominate in Venezuelan architecture.

La mayoría de las casas de familia tienen una entrada principal que da hacia la calle más importante, grandes vanos (puertas y ventanas) que dejan pasar la luz natural; a la entrada principal le sigue el zaguán; un pasillo largo que comunicaba la entrada con el interior de la vivienda, el patio central descubierto y las habitaciones ubicadas a su alrededor. Al diseño estructural del techo a dos aguas le acompañan grandes aleros que permitían aprovechar el agua de la lluvia, la cual se almacenaba en grandes toneles, cubos o barriles. El pasillo techado que sobresale de la construcción también es característicos. La cantidad de figuras decorativas que se le pusieran a la construcción dependían del poder económico de cada familia.
En conclusión, el bahareque, arcilla y barro, la caña amarga, grandes vigas de madera, piedras, tejas... entre otros materiales, predominan en la arquitectura venezolana.

El Hatillo is a municipality belonging to the Miranda State, Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela has a surface of approximately 81 km² and borders to the north with the municipalities Baruta and Sucre, to the south with the municipalities of Baruta and Paz Castillo, to the east with the municipality of Sucre and to the west with the municipality of Baruta. The municipality is located in a mountainous area, in the north-central region of Venezuela. It has a parish, Santa Rosalía de Palermo, it has a pleasant mountain climate, rivers and streams of pure and crystalline waters, abundant vegetation. The restaurant impressed me pleasantly with its modern style , beautiful, redesigned for comfort and good food for the variety of exquisite dishes it offers. The place, a former colonial house, was very well conditioned, achieving a correct distribution of space, providing harmony and peace, good lighting, beautiful ornamental details, large rooms that show elegant and spectacular furniture from yesterday and today, past and present in a same place, the fresh and ventilated place, clean, impeccable and most importantly the cordial treatment that the staff gives to the clients. If one day you visit the historic center of El Hatilo, I recommend you visit Hajillo´s restaurant, and you will see what you are reading in this publication.

El restaurante me impresionó gratamente por su estilo moderno, hermoso, rediseñado para el confort y buen comer por la variedad de exquisitos platos que ofrece. El local, otrora casa colonial, fue muy bien acondicionado logrando una correcta distribución de los espacio, proporcionando armonía y paz, buena iluminación, bonitos detalles ornamentales, grandes salas que muestran elegantes y espectaculares muebles de ayer y de hoy, pasado y presente en un mismo lugar, el sitio fresco y ventilado, limpio, impecable y lo mas importante el trato cordial que da el personal a los clientes. The photos of the streets of Hatillo remind me a lot of some towns in my state of Merida. I like to appreciate the colonial architecture, and it is beautiful to see how they have preserved them, I would love to visit the place someday.
