Getting teary-eyed while reading your post, I could simply imagine the kind of life your relative might have lived. The architectural heritage he has left behind as shown in his humble house with his personal belongings has surely accumulated a lot of sentimental value over the years, hence the fear of losing them. Those material things are definitely treasured ancestral items, however as you said:

Rust eats things and makes us remember that the main wealth is relationships and love, which are imperishable
