Hello to all my dear friends from Hive and the Architecture and Design community. I am here today to present you a jewel of Romantic architecture in Sicily. The castle of "Donna Fugata" which is located in the province of Ragusa.
We are in the full of the period called "Classic and Romantic", an art form that developed in Europe and then in America during the XIX and XX centurys.
Historical period that refers to two great phases in the history of art: “Classicism” of ancient art greco-roman and to what is considered its rebirth in humanism, “Romantic” to the Christian art of the Middle Ages, more precisely to the Romantic and the Gothic, that is to the Romance cultures.
It is in this period that a philosophy called “aesthetics” is formed, which will influence all the artistic disciplines of the time.
Its curious name “Donna Fugata” comes from Arabic “Ain-Jafat” meaning “Source of Health” because near the castle there is a water sourse.
There is also a legend that has as its protagonist the Queen "Bianca di Navarra".
The queen, who was widowed by the king of Sicily, was asked in marriage by Count Bernardo Cambrera, but as she did not agree to this wedding, she was locked up in a tower.
One day the girl managed to escape, so the castle was called "Donna Fugata", that is "Runaway Woman"
The castle has very ancient origins, dating back to around the year 1000, when there was only a watchtower, today it is inside the castle.
In the Middle Ages the Saracens conquered Sicily and fortified it using this complex as well.
Some say it has Arab-Islamic origins. The castle was built in 1300 by the Chiaramonte family, a noble family of the island, and they added the building as we know it today to the tower.
It is covers an area of about 2500 square meters and has a large neo-Gothic facade, a style evident in the loggia, recently modified at the behest of the descendants of Corrado Arezzo in 1928.
Square plan with two towers, it has similarities with the Tunisian castles of Sfax, Mahdia and Sousse. Divided over three floors it has 120 rooms, which still contain the original furnishings and furniture of the time.
Each room was decorated with a different taste and each had its own function.

There are many rooms with beautiful ceilings painted in delicate trompe-l'oeil such as in this photo, the bedroom of the Princess of Navarre, which also has a beautiful pitch stone and white limestone floor

In the 1648 the palace passes under the protection of the Arezzo family and in the XIX century the baron Corrado Arezzo De Spuches rework the architecture to make it his summer residence and use it as what appears today as one of the most beautiful castles in italy.

In 1982 it was purchased by the Municipal Administration of Ragusa who managed the restorations and used it as a museum.
Inside there is a permanent Museum of the History of Sicilian Costume between the XVIII and XX centuries, a precious collection of clothes and accessories that belonged to Gabriele Arezzo di Trifiletti

Around the castle there is a monumental and vast park of 8 hectares.
Esoteric park, like many other gardens in Europe, this too follows the English model, in fact inside there are symbols, allegories, esoteric signs ect
The park has about 1500 species of trees and plants and is divided into three parts, a vegetable garden and orchard, a French garden and an English one.
There are many exotic plants as the fashion of the time wanted, brought to Europe by travel and increased world trade.
It has paths and walkways that bring the visitor through a fascinating path to get lost in nature encountering temples, labyrinths, nymphaeums and caves.
The park also has a stone labyrinth built by the Baron with Ragusan stone on a project by the one in Hampton Court in London, trapezoidal in shape.
This unusual shape makes them unique in the world.
Labyrinth is seen as journey to the center of life, intense emotions where the sense of orientation is canceled out by deceptive paths.
The circular temple is a neoclassical architectural element widely used to adorn the gardens of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, with its eight Ionic columns arranged in a circle, supporting a graceful dome. The circle, symbolizing eternity together with the eight columns represents the perennial cycle of life, the humanistic concept of infinity.
Transmit emotions, create amazement with a series of spaces unexpected, this was the purpose.
I hope you enjoyed this trip to the romantic period and to this curious Sicilian castle. I was enchanted by so much beauty, I can say that Sicily for me is one of the most beautiful regions in Italy. Bye, see you soon!!!

I love the clothes, it is not every day that I get to see such beauty. I actually can't take my eyes off the green one.
Thanks @afterglow , that's right, the costume museum is great. I put some pictures of clothes because the museum is so vast that I should have done a post on this topic myself. Maybe next time, bye
You're welcome @titti
Greetings @titti. The castle of "Donna Fugata" is truly a magnificent piece of classical architecture, specifically to the Romantic and Gothic. Its surrounding complex of gardens, mazes, pathways, and other structures also add to its impressive presentation and interesting experience. Aside from the main castle, what other outdoor architectural detail within that estate was your favorite one and aroused your curiosity?
Its dome is very beautiful inside, all decorated with a spiral of stars on a blue background. It is a magical place, it seems that time has stopped.Thank you very much @storiesoferne, for appreciating this particular place in southern Italy. Your question is not easy to answer .. the most curious architectural element of that structure for me is the circular temple immersed in the green of the large garden, perhaps once a meeting point for lovers .... I will have been influenced by romanticism local...hahahaha
Oh yes. Since the castle plus the entire estate is romantically inclined not only in its architectural character, your choice of the circular temple as being the dating location for lovers, perfectly fits the overall theme. I'd likewise fall in love with the magical experiences you've encountered with the beautiful design details that abound there. Thank you so much for sharing another gem of architecture from Italy. 😊
It is a pleasure for me to share the art of my country with you. Bye
