Wildfires and Poetry

in Hive Book Club4 years ago (edited)

Life has been full lately. Wildfires. Mom life.

I haven't been able to focus on writing in a while.

The only thing I've written in the last ten days is this poem:

Too much noise.
The world crumbles.

It burns,
Rages,
Weeps.

Breaking cages.
Rattling keeps.

In the trees,
I seek peace.

Seeds grow in darkness.

We are whole
At the heart.

Before the wildfires started, I was making wicked progress in revisions on a couple of different manuscripts. Yay!

Then the heat wave hit. We had record highs for a week. A town three hours away from us was engulfed in fire, 95% of it burning to the ground.

This all happened at the same time that a pipeline burst and there was a giant hole of fire in the Gulf of fucking Mexico.

It blows the mind, you know?

Survival mode isn't very conducive to writing, in my experience. So, I've been playing guitar, and hiking, and hanging out in my backyard with rocks and crystals and a cup of tea.

And doom scrolling, of course. Refreshing community pages and fire maps all day and all night.

I find gratitude amidst uncertainty, amidst packing and re-packing the bags and bins that line the entry way and living room of my house, ready to load into the truck and trailer if we have to go. Hopefully, they'll sit there all summer, unneeded.

If you look on a map, there are a lot of fires, but there's a lot more wilderness that is forested.

Our valleys are green.

Our mountains are beautiful.

I try to focus on that.

Not on the clearcuts, which are far more prolific than the fires. I don't know how people are still cutting down trees when they're burning, when we need them more than ever...

I envision rain.

A week of rain.

Gentle,
Calm,
Deep.

Cool.
Lush.

Green trees, protected.

Mother Earth, respected.

🌲🌳🌿💦

Note: This is a personal update more than an author update, but it's also an example of using writing as therapy. I've posted this in the Hive Book Club as an offering of how one author processes the intensity of life.

Stay safe out there. 💖

Whatever happens, keep singing your song!

I like your poem-it seems to speak to the times. Or to my times.

It's hot and dry here. Even for a hot and dry place it's hot and dry. The over night temps are brutal, we have not been under 27C for a month. So Sam and I aren't walking, just surviving.

I am headed north in a week or so. I'm going to Kings Canyon and Sequoia National Parks for a couple of days. I'm really looking forward to it.

Always good to hear from you my friend. I look forward to your next book...

That's hot! It's hard to do anything when it's like that.

I hope your adventure is wonderful and cool. Please hug a tree for me along the way. And thank you for the compliment. I'll get back to that sequel soon. 💖

I've never been to see General Grant. The largest living thing on earth. I intend to remedy that oversight in the next week. Sequoias are impressive things.

They really are. I haven't been to the sequoias, but I've spent a fair amount of time in Redwood Nat'l Park in Northern Cali, and the sense of peace there is profound.

I really want to go to Redwoods State Park and check out the Canopy Walk. That has to be cool beyond words, but it's only open 2 months. I'll pass this year. Maybe next summer (I'm due back at the Oregon Coast, too :))

Oooh! I bet the canopy walk is amazing. And the Oregon Coast is lovely. So many wonderful places to visit. I hope you enjoy your upcoming trip!

Namaste bay bay. 😋🤗 Was mowing the lawn today right? Some of it was so dry, after it had been mowed before, it sat there and mulched itself as I saw smoke poof after going over it again. Raining now, and I hope the fires subside entirely in your area Princess. Love and hugs.

It doesn't take much when it's dry, that's for sure. Glad you're getting some rain. Thanks for the kindness. Love back at'cha!

I hope things calm down for you soon and that you remain centered. I love your poem! Things have been very crazy for me for some time too, no wildfires but more like rough sees. This poem speaks to my feelings for sure.

I think a lot of people have been riding rough seas emotionally and mentally lately. Hang in there. And thanks for the kind words. :)

this is the truth, always love your outlook on things!

Thank you for sharing.

Thank you. I'm glad you enjoyed the poem. And things are good for us right now, just... intense in the surrounding area. But we're safe here, and grateful for it.

Do stay safe.

cheers

I always love your poems and mind, this is another great one.
I can't really relate to the fires to much as the fires we had here was 8 hours away.
But I really hope you never need to use the bags and get into the truck.
I pray that you Stay safe and that you can focus on the things you love instead of dealing with that ❤️

I wish you a wonderful week sweet Sister and Bobby and I are sending all our love your way 😊🐶🥰
You are amazing ❤️🌹❤️

Sending love right back. Thank you for the kind thoughts. 💖💞

Your energy changed... It's like you leveled up or something...

You're so sweet. Thank you. Don't we all level up if we keep growing?

We all do indeed, I am checking all videos from 2018 when we started on here. I actually might post a reaction, because it's hilarious to see the evolution.
Peace!!
