Kiamboy Pickled Fruit Dish

Butter Fried Chicken Rice and Spaghetti Bolognese from Hugo Cafe Medan (5).jpg

Do you know something about food that has a unique taste like 'Kiamboy'?

Well, this time I will share something interesting about kiamboy, sometimes we call it somboy. Something with a different name, but still the same meaning. This kiamboy has a taste that tends to be unique, sweet and salty combined into one. Almost like oralit, but not.

Kiamboy is usually made from orange peel or sometimes made from preserved plums. This food is a way to survive from abundant agricultural products, so that in this way the harvest can be eaten for a long time. Every region must have its own way. I will give an example like kimchi, which is deliberately made and fermented to be used for a long time. One of the reasons for doing this is because there are mustard greens that must be used because the harvest is quite large in quantity.

Same as kiamboy, but in a food version that is full of fruit. Usually tropical fruits will be harvested in large quantities at the same time. This time, the kiamboy pickle that I will make is based on the most abundant fruit in the supermarket. I will make kiamboy pickles such as:

  • Salak
  • Apple
  • Pear
  • Longan
  • Grapes
  • Of course kiamboy plum with white color
  • Water, sugar, salt, musk lime and chili

The ingredients above are the ingredients that I will use. Usually kiamboy pickles are made from tropical fruits such as mango, rambutan and pineapple. But this time it is not the right time to find them, because it is not the time to harvest tropical fruits. It is very unfortunate.

But, that will not make me upset and give up. Of course the fruit that I use can also be a substitute or the right replacement. The important thing is that we can make this food without losing the essence of its taste.

Okay, starting from cleaning, peeling the skin, and also cutting the fruit that we will use. The most tiring part of making kiamboy pickles but believe me this will not betray the results.

After everything is ready to be cut and peeled, then you should prepare the kiamboy which must also be cut into several parts. Well, the kiamboy will expand if soaked in water, so we have to cut it to get an even kiamboy.

Don't forget to cut the musk lime into 2 parts, half of the portion must be squeezed to make this pickle have a more sour taste. My favorite part is when I have to squeeze some musk lime and put it in a container.

Finally, add sugar, salt and enough water to soak all the fruits. Store in the refrigerator for at least 4 hours so that the flavor of the sauce is well absorbed and the fruit also gives off a sweet taste that makes the sauce richer in flavor.

I store it overnight, so it gets a very strong flavor. I can even make everyone like this food. Are you interested in making this recipe?

Hi @aswita

Where are the ingredient quantities for this recipe? Please edit and add this information.

Thank you.

This is amazing. . Never heard of kiamboy . This looks nice and apetizing

A fruit pickle? This is totally new to me, I see in the recipe fruits that I have never tasted and now the curiosity seizes me, the white fruit seems to give off something that gives thickness to the mixture? I have only known very sweet or very sour pickles but nothing in between. Thank you for sharing this recipe, it is fascinating! ('▽ `) ノ 🩵

Different countries and different cuisines I've never seen anything like this before, looks like something that would be really healthy and delicious
