Hello vegan lovers, today I will take part in the challenge given this week with the theme root vegetables. So I decided to use sweet potato as the main ingredient for the cake I'm going to make.
Klepon cake, a traditional Indonesian cake that tastes sweet and savory, klepon cake is a traditional cake originating from the island of Java, but there is no definite reference to which part of the Java province.
In Indonesia, this klepon cake is usually made from glutinous rice flour which has a chewy texture, so sometimes it is difficult for children to swallow it, especially if it is bitten in large portions it is very difficult to chew and swallow (like moci cake from Japan).
I will make a klepon cake with the main ingredient of sweet potato. Sweet potato also has a slightly chewy texture after being processed into cooking, so it is similar to glutinous rice flour too.
So that the cake looks more beautiful in color, choose purple sweet potato, yesterday when I bought them at the traditional market, I didn't find purple ones, only orange sweet potato.
To make klepon cake with sweet potato as the main ingredient, we need the following ingredients:
1 kg sweet potato
250 gram glutinous rice flour
100 grams palm sugar
salt 1/2 tablespoon
3 L water (1 L to boil the yam and 2 L to boil the dough)
grated coconut 1/2 grain (when grating coconut, only take the white part).
how to make the klepon cake:
the first step: peel the sweet potato, then wash the sweet potato, that your hands are not exposed to the sap, you can use gloves or coat your hands with cooking oil.
the second step: cut the sweet potato uinto smaller pieces (but not too small, so they don't crumble when boiled)
If you find a sweet potato like this, throw it away, because it tastes a bit bitter when cooked.
the third step: put 1 L of water into the pot, then add the sweet potato pieces.
the fourth step: boil the sweet potato until soft, but not crushed.
the fifth step: while waiting for the sweet potato to ripen, let's thinly slice the palm sugar (for the cake filling).
the sixth step: turn off the stove after the sweet potato are cooked and soft.
the seventh step: puree the sweet potato (I used a glass cup), add salt, then puree until everything is evenly mixed.
the eighth step : add the glutinous rice flour, stir until it forms a dough.
the ninth step: after the dough is formed, then we take a tablespoon of dough or according to taste, we form a round and then flatten the center of the dough.
the tenth step : put the pieces of palm sugar into the middle of the dough, then close the dough again until the palm sugar is no longer visible. So that your hands don't get smudged when you add the palm sugar, use a spoon.
the eleventh step: to save time, before the dough runs out, let's boil the water. Add 2 L of water to the pot, bring to a boil.
the twelfth step: this is the dough that we have formed. let's see if the cooking water has boiled, when the water has boiled, let's add the klepon cake dough.
the thirteenth step: after the cake dough floats, it means the cake is cooked and ready to be served.
The shape of the klepon cake is not the same, because my 7 year old son helped and formed the cake according to his wishes😂
let's serve it with delicious grated coconut. if the cake is for sale again, then steam the grated coconut and add sugar to taste, this is done so that the grated coconut does not go stale quickly.
good luck, keep the spirit to always be happy.

Hi @umirais! Thank you for participating in the weekly contest. I really like this recipe because it is full of delicious flavors and textures. Sweet potato is very versatile, I usually eat it in chips which are delicious with a touch of salt. I think it's great that these little buns have a filling, because it's a nice surprise when you bite into them and sprinkle them with shredded coconut, they sure add an interesting contrast. Very good recipe. Cheers.
thanks so much @sirenahippie 🙏
