It's a select stuffy few whom still think specific words are the issue, when it's just their outdated view. If they can't tune them out, then maybe they should just tune you out and you them...

No.

Edit: That kind of self-induced censorship is unhealthy in both my opinion and my experience.

If folks are concerned about their family members hearing what is said... I would tell them something along the lines of: "There is this awesome invention called headphones!"

Valid points, particularly the headphones.

"self induced censorship" is really not accurate though. A better description would be "self control" wouldn't it?

But yeah, headphones are good. :)

I dunno about that, 'self control' implies that there is something inherently wrong with swearing and furthermore that not doing so is necessary to not cause harm to self or others.

He would only need 'self control' in this instance if he were worrying about living up to someone else's standards...

Swearing gets annoying if it is excessive. There are other words that could convey the speaker's meaning more effectively.

Swearing isn't really necessary, The words are not that descriptive. And about not sheltering a child from reality, how do you explain to them that fucking is a wonderful thing but it is also a word you say in disgust?

I would also like to add that you do not "swear" excessively anyway. :)
