Edit: That kind of self-induced censorship is unhealthy in both my opinion and my experience.
If folks are concerned about their family members hearing what is said... I would tell them something along the lines of: "There is this awesome invention called headphones!"

"self induced censorship" is really not accurate though. A better description would be "self control" wouldn't it?
But yeah, headphones are good. :)
I dunno about that, 'self control' implies that there is something inherently wrong with swearing and furthermore that not doing so is necessary to not cause harm to self or others.
He would only need 'self control' in this instance if he were worrying about living up to someone else's standards...
