Trip to Nachi Waterfall in Wakayama, Japan
I went sightseeing at Nachi Waterfalls in Nachikatsuura City, Wakayama Prefecture. I have wanted to go to Nachi Waterfalls for a long time, but it is too far from Osaka for a day trip to go here, and I need to stay overnight. So I wondered if anyone would go with me since going alone would be no fun. So I talked to a friend, and we hit it off and decided to go together. After all, traveling with friends is fun. It is a lot better than going alone.
I drove from Osaka to Nachikatsuura City. I had researched it beforehand, but it takes about five hours by car. First, we went by a bakery and bought a lot of bread to eat in the car. Since it was too hard to drive to the city, we stopped by the longest suspension bridge in Japan, the Tanise Suspension Bridge, on the way. Nara Prefecture, where this suspension bridge is located, is mountainous. There are many suspension bridges like this one, and they seem to be an essential part of the daily transportation network for the people in the area. The suspension bridges are really high, and it was quite a challenge for me, as I have a slight fear of heights, to cross them, which swayed from side to side whenever the wind blew. But it was a great memory for me! Scary but fun, if you know what I am saying!
From then on, we drove on and on across the valley to Nachi Waterfalls. It was really relaxing to drive through these green mountains, which you cannot see in Osaka city, and I really enjoyed just driving in the mountains. It was relaxing, partly because it had been a long time since I had been on an overnight trip. When we got to Nachi Waterfalls, it was starting to rain a little bit of light rain. Fine rain! Yes, fine rain!! The water splashed from Nachi Waterfalls, and when I saw the spray rise up into the mountains and form into clouds, it looked as if a water dragon was rising from the basin of the waterfall. I felt I understood why the ancient Japanese regarded this place as sacred and respected it. Many Japanese worship this waterfall as a kami, the god of water dragons! Isn't it, pretty cool?!
Nachi Waterfalls is part of the Kumano Kodo World Heritage Site, and this waterfall is also designated as a World Heritage Site. Perhaps for this reason, when I arrived at the falls, I found a truly international atmosphere, with people from all over the world visiting the area. There were people speaking languages I had never heard before, and many tourists came from Europe, North America, South America, and Asia. Of course there were Japanese, but I was a bit surprised at the number of tourists. Many of the European tourists were individuals, either couples taking buses or trains, or sightseeing with backpacks. Many Asian tourists were in groups, riding in large buses. Seeing them enjoying Japan in their own way, I was hoping that through international exchange, our countries would become closer to each other.
Unfortunately, the five-story pagoda above the waterfall was under repair. Since it was under repair, it was covered with a repair sheet and we could not see anything. I thought this five-story pagoda would have a very iconic and impressive view of Nachi Waterfalls in the background, so I was a little disappointed when I found out it was being repaired, but I thought it was a good thing that I had another reason to come back.
I realized that it had been a long time since I returned to Japan, and it wasn't easy to make friends! But now that I have a friend I can go on trips with, I am getting used to life in Japan, even if just a little bit, and I am grateful to my friend who went with me. I would like to go sightseeing in Japan again and fall in love with the country even more. I am so happy to come back. No regrets! I must move on. This is my life, one life, one chance.
