Today I bring you one of the best stories that as a photographer I have been protagonist. A few months ago several friends planned to explore one of the many caves in the mountainous region known as "Mil Cumbres" in the province of Pinar del Rio. The name of the cave, El Mamey, not because it was named after a fruit, was so appetizing to explore.
I have no experience exploring caves, that made me a first-timer in these matters, but in my eagerness for new and dangerous places and why not, to be able to take some good pictures, I gave in to the adventure.
I would never have decided if I had not been accompanied by the best, friends with a lot of experience and who gave me security and confidence.
Once we arrived at the place I understood how difficult everything would be, first we had to cross an area flooded with water up to the neck and full of pieces of sticks that the river brought, once we had advanced came what would be for me the hardest test, half claustrophobic as I am I realized that the ceiling almost joined the ground, just half a meter or less of separation and we had to pass lying down, it was really very desperate and suffocating plus all the adjectives that can occur.
Once we reached the end of the course, which I was relieved to see, it was already shaped like a large cave. The water ran by my feet and some shrimp could be seen from time to time.
Although the most striking thing was a kind of felling of spiders that fell from the ceiling, I am told that they were a kind of larvae that trapped insects. In other countries they light up in the dark, the ones here have no light, what a coincidence.
Anyway, my trip to the center of the earth was unforgettable as my nephew said, although honestly I would think twice before returning. Being in dark and closed places are not my thing, although I can't deny that it is exciting.
