I had never heard of this place and it ended up one of the highlights of our recent summer holiday. We has slept over night in Moree and attended there parkrun that morning then it was back to the accommodation for a shower and a quick spa at the thermal pools before heading to Coonabarabran and the Warrumbungle Nation Park. It was a pretty short drive by Australian standards so we dropped into the tourist information centre and asked about these Sandstone Caves I had seen on google maps. The helpful lady said it was a nice easy walk and she was not wrong.

I love it when you pull up and there is no one else around and you get the whole place to yourselves.

Yaama means Welcome to Gamilaraay Country. Lots of information boards explaining at the history of the area.

It was quite warm in the exposed areas in the direct sun but a enough breeze and shade to make the short walk very enjoyable.

I could easily picture the local aboriginal people doing there carvings in the cool caves out of the mid day sun. I could have happily set up camp here myself. There were a lot of steel cages protecting the old rock carving which was a bit disappointing but I suppose they have to stop all the idiots damaging things. Luckily I could get the phone camera close enough to the cage to make it look like it was not there.

The whole area had a bit of Central Australia or Northern Territory feel.

I plan to visit similar sites here in the States this year. I've been to Pompey's Pillar, and they also had protective measures for the Lewis and Clark carvings. Closer to home, there is also Treaty Rock Park in Post Falls, Idaho with similarly preserved carvings. I haven't been to any sites with native petroglyphs or the like in ages.

We would !LUV to visit some of the carvings in the States. The best ones I have seen in Australia were up in the Northern Territory. Kakadu National park. We should really revisit there to I was pretty young and I think I would appreciate them a lot more now.
