For this CCC's Street Art Contest #233 organized by digi-me, we're going to do the last post in the series on the Canettes de Ruelle festival that took place in September 2024 in Montreal. I'm missing a couple of murals for this edition, one that I completely forgot to photograph and two others where the lighting wasn't right as you'll see at the end of the post. For the contest I chose this mural done by Ekes and Airod. But there are three murals in this post, so let me know if I've made the right choice, which is your favorite...

Il me manque deux ou trois murales pour cette édition, soit une que j'ai complétement oublié de photographier et deux autres dont la luminosité n'était pas bonne. Pour le concours j'ai choisi cette murale de Ekes et Airod. Mais il y a trois murales dans ce post, vous me direz si j'ai fait le bon choix, quelle est votre préférée...

As I said in previous posts about this festival, I find that this year there were many murals in an abstract style. This is the case with Ekes aka Johnny Waffle, artist & tattoo artist and Airod, even if you can read the letters. I like the color palette, which is why I chose him for the CCC's Street Art Contest.
Comme je le disais dans les posts précédents au sujet de ce festival, je trouve que cette année il y a eu pas de murale dans un style abstrait. C'est le cas avec Ekes aka Johnny Waffle, artiste / tatoueur et Airod, même si on arrive à lire les lettres. J'aime bien la palette de couleurs, c'est pour cela que je l'ai choisi pour le CCC's Street Art Contest.
Christian de Massy
I hesitated to enter the contest with this mural by Christian de Massy. It's in the alley between 7th and 8th avenues, closer to boulevard Saint Joseph. First time I've seen a mural by this artist and illustrator. It looks like a black-and-white comic strip painted on a wall.
J'ai hésité pour le concours avec cette murale faite par Christian de Massy. Elle se situe dans la ruelle entre la 7ème et 8ème avenue, plus près du boulevard Saint Joseph. Première fois que je vois une murale de cet artiste et illustrateur. Cela ressemble à une bande dessinée en noir et blanc peinte sur un mur.
The work is called Fidus in sylvus silentibus. As my Latin is a bit rusty, I had to do some research 😀. This doesn't seem to mean anything in Latin, but it would come close to Faithful to the silent forest. If anyone has information on Latin sentence ? A quote? From a book or something? 🤔
L'oeuvre se nomme Fidus in sylvus silentibus. Comme mon latin est un peu rouillé, j'ai dû faire quelques recherches 😀. Cela ne semble pas signifier quelque chose en latin, mais cela se rapprocherait de Fidèle à la forêt silencieuse. Si quelqu'un a peu d'informations à ce sujet ? Une citation ? Tiré d'un livre ou autre ? 🤔
How do you like this work? I like it especially because of all the details, like the little man with a hat hiding behind a tree. / FR : Comment trouvez-vous cette oeuvre ? J'aime beaucoup surtout à cause de tous les détails comme ce petit bonhomme avec chapeau qui se cache derrière un arbre.
Maylee Keo & Kaori Izumiya
The latest mural is a collaboration between Maylee Keo and Kaori Izumiya, two Montreal-based artists and illustrators. The mural is located in the same alley as the one by Ekes and Airod (between 5th and 6th av south of Masson).
La dernière murale est l'oeuvre de Maylee Keo et Kaori Izumiya, deux artistes et illustratrices basées à Montréal. La murale se trouve dans la même ruelle que celle de Ekes et Airod (entre la 5e et 6e av au sud de Masson).
I think their styles go very well together. On the photo above 🔼, it's a Maylee character surrounded by flowers painted by Kaori. And on the other part, it's the other way around. Interesting concept. Too bad the sun shone a little too brightly on this mural, especially with the shade of the trees. I have two other murals where I had the same problem. I'll have to go back in the spring to show you.
Je trouve que leurs styles vont très bien ensemble. Sur la photo du haut 🔼, il s'agit d'un personnage de Maylee entouré de fleurs peintes par Kaori. Et sur l'autre partie, c'est l'inverse. Concept intéressant. Dommage que le soleil éclairait un peu trop cette murale, surtout avec l'ombre des arbres. J'ai deux autres murales dont j'ai eu le même problème. Il faudra que j'y retourne au printemps pour vous montrer cela.

My favorite is the black-and-white one with all the Easter eggs in it.
The first one that appears as the post preview image looks like it’s in a scary location. If that was Los Angeles, there would probably be a bunch of urine and pocket knives to stab you in the stomach.
Yes, I hesitated to put up this mural for the contest because, as you say, there are lots of Easter Eggs. This part of Montreal is really quiet, very family-oriented, no stabbing 😀

I’m glad you included it. I really love the depth the artist created. It’s almost like they used illustrative detail to accentuate depth. I see a little off-white in the middle, but still the details seem to dominate a middle horizon.
I wonder if the artist is done with it.
I wonder if the artists lives right around the block or was it a greater commitment requiring SoCal traffic and convolution.
