Drones don't like Cold + Fog Weather?

Props on the drone freezing?

Drone crash cold.png

I was flying in the cold conditions before, but looks like it was never this humid. Fist i thought it is the fog messing with something but then i saw ice forming on propellers. Ice is probably messing up the aerodynamics of props as the drone does not just stop, it starts to drop down and you have no control of it.

Sensors also can't do anything. My Dji mini has only ground sensors (down facing sensors), but it can't do anything because there is no lift in the props. And it is funny that sometimes when it hits the ground it bounces and continue to try to fly. Probably because it shakes of some of the ice. Maybe the best solution is to just cut the motors just above the ground?

Is ice on drone propellers also a problem for bigger drones? Anything like this happened to you? Is there something that you can apply on props so they don't gather moisture?

Poor drone. I wish I could help, but zero mind for technical stuff. Maybe stay in? Have some mulled wine instead? :D (you. Don't give the drone wine under any circumstances.)

And it is funny that sometimes when it hits the ground it bounces and continue to try to fly.

don't we all? ;)

i think that was the same thought of the one random guy we met that morning (with some other thoughts like these two people are not right in their heads :D )

i think even the animals were thinking you people are probably not ok (except the dog, dog wanted to eat us, and if the fence was not big enough he probably would be able to :) )

you can see the judgment in that look 😂

i must admit i didn't expect philosophy of life on this post. but that was spot on 😄

Must be the fog/mist freezing. Be careful with that so you don't lose the drone! I've flown in -20 degrees F (-28C) for 20-30 minutes without issue using both Mavic 2 and Mavic 3. Have to watch the battery life, but no other issues for me, but wasn't wet or foggy. It's the ice freezing on the props, not the cold. Unless you're way below those temps.

it was "only" around -5C. but humidity was really high. i had to remove ice from the props. it was never a plan to fly far and we were a bit lucky to not start filming around the river :)
it felt like ice on the props changed the shape of them so it got no lift.

Thank you for this info. I have a mini-drone which I still didn't use by the way. Now when I know all of this I will definitely avoid playing with it during unfavorable weather conditions.
I don't think weather affects bigger drones all that much, I saw police drone operating just fine.

could be it bigger drones are less affected but i think it is a mix of elements. it was pretty cold and really humid as it was a thick fog. So after a while the whole propeller was covered with ice, so there was no angle for it to generate lift.

the same also happened few years ago, but i didn't see the ice and thought it was just a weird malfunction. and i was pretty stressed out seeing it hitting the ground and bouncing. now i was more or less ok with what ever would happen, as it already survived more than i thought it will :)

At least it landed on a ground, my favorite spot is a lake surrounded with forest. A lot of birds there plus view is fantastic, but I don't think I would be able to retrieve a drone and a heavy moisture and fog are default settings up there.
For the better lift the only thing that crosses my mind is stronger engine, a bit difference in weight is neglectable as an engine carries itself.
As for sensors, I think there should be different types. Once we traveled by a car thought the zero visibility fog, we couldn't move and I mounted my phone on a dashboard to see through that, it worked. So there must be a drone that has something similar.
For the one that you have, maybe you could install stronger or brighter lights, if you have an option for that. All police drones are equipped with various tech, but different piercing types or lights are pretty much on all that I saw so far.
Mine doesn't have any of that, so thank you for the information, it came in right time.

i generally don't like to fly in fog (at least not far so i don't know where the drone is :) ).
This one survived 30 days on a tree, so i wrote it off then :D all of this is just a bonus in his drone life :D

never thought of trying to use a phone to see better in for, but maybe it makes sense. interesting.

It must be very cold out there for it to affect the drone like this.

it was around -5C but it was really humid because of the fog.

I don’t know much about drones but I feel sorry for that drone

looks like it survived :)

It is a fact that these cameras do not give good results in this weather because there is a lot of water in front of them, so it is not possible to get good results.
