And I thought #ProtonMail had a "strict no logs policy" and 256 encryption 😥😥

They don't encrypt metadata such as:

  1. Subject Lines
  2. Sender
  3. Receiver
    etc.

And I think that's what they used to suspend the account mentioned in the article.

How often does protonmail disable accounts? How many complaints of this sort have you found?

PS: I can see the need for mail servers to suspend accounts for spam. The post indicated that it was closed for an association with a forum that engaged in illegal activity.

Spammers often register accounts by the dozen. Spammers often throw legitimate accounts in with the bad accounts to hide their tracks.

In the war against spam, mail servers probably have to disable accounts by the dozen as well.

This is bad I thought protonmail is a good one😕

I suspect that this isn't really news @fav @jancharlest

  • It's been known for a long time that #ProtonMail doesn't encrypt metadata like Subject Lines, Sender + Receiver, etc.

And they have cooperated w/Law Enforcement before.

Hmmmm... I think that's news. 🕵️‍♂️

The email address was used to create an account on an illegal site (though that account was never used). The email account was then suspended because of its association with that site. It proves the possibility of accounts getting suspended just because they were used to register on an illegal site, even though anybody could just insert someone else's email address on any illegal site. 😳

@jancharlest 🤓

Wow 😳

  • I didn't realize that . . that's horrible :/

Thanks for tagging me! 😅

Maybe they were just forced by a court order to suspend the account because it was used to register an account on an illegal site, even though the account was never used. However, that also means that any email address used by someone else on an illegal website can be suspended in the same manner. 😳

criptext or ctemplar (invite only)

cool, this would help thanks😊👍

Tell me if you begin using one or both of them! 😆😅

I just found another guy whose account was blocked by protonmail just because he used it to buy bitcoin.
