In these sunny days it's a pleasure to take a trip out of town.
Mosaic art is quite widespread in Italy. However, there is a city that excels in this type of art: Ravenna. We are in the Emilia-Romagna region, in northern Italy.
Visiting the historic center, you can see traces of mosaics and works made with this original technique everywhere. The meanings can be multiple: religious, political, civil and mystical.

In questi giorni soleggiati è un piacere fare una gita fuori porta.
L’arte del mosaico è piuttosto diffusa in Italia. Tuttavia, c’è una città che eccelle in questa tipologia di arte: Ravenna. Siamo nella regione Emilia-Romagna, nel nord Italia.
Visitando il centro storico, si intravedono ovunque tracce di mosaici e opere realizzate con questa tecnica originale. I significati possono essere molteplici: religiosi, politici, civili e mistici.

Mosaic is an ancient technique that was born with the first civilizations in history. We find evidence of this art among the Sumerians, the Egyptians, the Greeks and the Romans.
Ravenna in the 5th century was the new capital of the Western Roman Empire, and it was precisely in this period that the mosaic technique began to spread. In particular, the most important religious buildings and courts began to be covered with mosaic carpets.
Il mosaico è una tecnica antichissima che nasce con le prime civiltà della storia. Troviamo testimonianze di quest’arte tra i Sumeri, gli Egizi, i Greci e i Romani.
Ravenna nel V secolo era la nuova capitale dell’Impero Romano d’Occidente, e proprio in questo periodo la tecnica del mosaico iniziò a essere diffusa. In particolare, gli edifici di culto e le corti più importanti iniziarono a essere rivestiti di tappeti di mosaico.

The most famous example is the Basilica of San Vitale, where scenes from the Bible are represented. In this church the floors and walls are embellished with hundreds of mosaics.
Another example of Ravenna’s mosaic is the famous church of Sant’Apollinare, where the apse is entirely covered in mosaic. Both churches have been declared UNESCO heritage sites.
L’esempio più famoso è la Basilica di San Vitale, dove sono rappresentate scene della Bibbia. In questa chiesa i pavimenti e le pareti sono impreziositi di centinaia di mosaici.
Un altro esempio del mosaico di Ravenna è la famosa chiesa di San’Apollinare, dove l’abside è interamente mosaicato. Entrambe le chiese sono state dichiarate patrimonio UNESCO.

Every corner of the historic center tells a story through its mosaics, and it is amazing how these works manage to convey such deep and diverse meaning.

Oh wow, the mosaics are so beautiful. Thanks for the recommendation, it is a bit out of the usual route we do through Italy, but maybe one year we can extend the days we spend in your country and visit more cities and towns. :)

Those mosaics are so well-preserved! Did I understand you well that the Basilica of San Vitale is from the 5th century? That is amazing how in good shape it is! Also, I had no idea that Ravenna was the capital of the Western Roman Empire!
