Last week I ran 10.55 km within 1 hour 54min to keep my promise, and it was very challenging to complete that milestone. The plan to meet this target was also inspired by my previous post when I reached the 8.28 km milestone within 1 hour 29min. I concluded last week's post by questioning my approach that it was not sustainable to try and speed up the process. The goal is to match up the endurance and stamina I used to have when I was still a fitness enthusiast. Maybe I was pushing myself too hard especially last week when I had to force myself to finish the last 2 km to make it up to 10 km. But did my new approach work this weekend?
Guess what?
I managed to run 10km in 1 hour 19min, which is quite an improvement compared to last week's milestone. I had to take a screenshot because I reached this milestone about 1 km from home. So I had to continue to run back home and ended up with a new milestone of 11 km in 1 hour 28min. I tried to convince myself to take one step at a time to regain my previous stamina and endurance, my body was fully set to stick to that. But my silly brain could not avoid the dopamine I got when I looked at the last milestone.
I woke up Saturday morning to update my playlist ADDING Makhadzi, Mr Crown, and TitoM, put on my running gear and head off to the road to Thames Path to at least match last week's record. I used to think they were exaggerating when they said exercising can stimulate dopamine release the same way drugs do. Oh dear I can't believe that this week (yesterday) things took a different turn when I got to 8 km, just when I thought I was running out of breath. My heart started questioning my brain if it was on drugs or not the moment my playlist got to this one song that I like when sprinting: "Best of Me" by NEFFEX.
So who won the argument?
I swear the two (my brain and heart) were arguing using the lyrics from the song. Yes I know this sounds crazy but that is what dopamine does to you when it spikes, makes you have a cocaine experience. I started racing like some Formula 1 car that just got an upgrade of Chassis, aero package and engine power. Oh yes, I was singing lyrics and it gets crazy when the song gets to the part where it says "They want the best of me now, they want it now".
My brain took that literally and had to convince my lungs that now means today, not tomorrow. haha. Okay enough now, I just played the song while writing this post and had to stop because the dopamine spike was telling me to go and run now. I will leave that for tomorrow since we have a bank holiday. But I doubt I will match the new milestone. Or Would I do it again tomorrow? Only my Monday mood or dopamine dosage will tell.

10km in that time frame is impressive, make sure to keep a check on your heart rate as well while doing it, might help you understand your endurance level. You'll probably get better and cover more distance
Thank you! I think It's now getting a little bit addictive. This past weekend was way better than the last one.
And, Yes that's a good idea💫. I will try to get a smart watch to keep check on my heart rate and at least have a baseline to work with. Or is there a way I can monitor my heart rate?
The best way is to simply buy a holster monitor, an apple watch or any watch that monitors the heart rate. Basically a heart rate of 135 to 150 BPM should be the max when running a little distance. This monitor will help you to keep tabs
Okay great! I think a watch would do. I'm adding it to my cart. Thanks for this awareness. I will add it to my routine and it's going to be a great measure of my improved endurance.
I'm so excited to give it a shot next week probably as a baseline! Its gonna be exciting to see the timeline and progress in regaining my fitness zone.☺️
