If you have seen my two previous reports, you won’t believe the step count from today. I can’t believe it either. Here’s the story.
A fever of 39° on Thursday and 38° C on Friday had made me cancel my weekend hiking trip.
Last night my lymphocytes fought a fierce battle against the virus forces. First type B was sent for reconnaissance and then the type T squads assaulted the enemy. Result - a troubled night, with little sleep but lots of excruciating coughing and sneezing that probably kept my neighbours awake.
At 6am I got up to meet my hiking group and passed them some equipment. Then I got back to my apartment. I thought - „it’s only 6:15am and I am already tired…”. So I collapsed into my bed. Then a miracle happened - I slept very well for 3 hours and woke up well rested. The fever gone, the cough in much lighter version, a bit of runny nose, but in the light watery way. „Not too bad”, I thought and an idea occurred to me that I could perhaps get out for a walk.
I didn’t quite believe, so lingered for about two hours inside but still feeling OK-ish (OK here means much better than yesterday, it’s still far from my normal OK), I decided fresh air and a bit of exercise would do me well.
I checked the weather (windless, few degrees above freezing, low humidity - so perfect for a recovery walk), dressed accordingly and went out. Soon I met an elderly lady, almost bent in half, who was dragging a two-wheeled shopping bag. She struggled visibly up a little hillock so I offered to help her. I realised how heavy the cart was when I carried it 4 flights of stairs up in her block of flats, without an elevator.
The woman said I was „sent from God”. In a way, yes, because if not for the fever, I would have been hiking in mountains. The lady was such a pleasant and radiant soul, that I felt blessed to be able to help her. We found that mountains were our common passion. It was a short encounter but it loaded me with endorphins.
I started walking, much slower than normally, but I totally did 20km - 7km to a nearby lake, 6km around it and 7km back home. At each stage I consulted with my body whether we wanted to continue or take a bus home. But my lungs, heart, legs and brain all were happy to keep walking. No fever, I coughed only a few times and used only 3 soft tissues to clean my nose (compared to almost half a box during the night!)
As Salomon says in the Bible „a cheerful heart is the best medicine”. A day which had initially looked like a disaster, evolved into happy time. I am thankful for that.

Great you were able to bounce back so quickly

3 days of fluctuations in fever to 38.8 and now it's OK, but I feel exhausted from lying in bed with a runny nose and I will have to gently return to long hours outside
All the best! I also thought that it must be a virus distributed along the Polish tag road
fever up to 39 in a otherwise healthy adult is not harmful (yet exhausting it is) - this is how our immune system fights the virus (2 degrees more than our normal 36,6 start damaging virus's protein chains). So I allowed my body to heat up and took Apap only when I had almost 39 and it could potentially go higher overnight.
A long (but very slow) walk in good weather, outside of the city, with exposure to sun, is good for recovery. Lingering in bed too long is not
That was truly a "miraculous" recovery. Congratulations on defeating the disease and getting points in #poliac.
it was really amazing how it worked out.
Yesterday:
6:15 - I was already tired.
9:30 - not too bad.
11:00 - let's try a small walk.
16:30 - have I really walked 20km?!
...
Today:
7:30 - no fever, clean nose, but a bit faster than normal heartbeat at rest and my breath is still shallow. I am not in a condition for mountains, but slow walk will be again part of my medicine set
Fortunately, some diseases can be "cured" :-)
