I am working on a version of 'Oj, ora je ora je.'
I first heard this song in the 2nd episode of the Dobro Jutro Komšija TV series. In the show, Danica goes to a pub, drinks several shots of rakija, and sings this song. Later, I heard the song on a YouTube playlist seeded with another song from the show.(Pjeske idem iz grada) Bora Drljača has done both songs.
As I have worked on versions of both songs, what I have learned is that there is no way to reproduce the sound and feel of an accordion. This is frustrating when trying to play these songs with an acoustic guitar!
To add to the frustration, Bora Drljača recorded with an amazing accordion player. Even with an accordion, there is no way I could play like that.
At any rate, I have an acoustic guitar version, and it currently sounds like this.
I am sure this song will morph as I get more comfortable with the words.
To any native speakers of the language, what do 'kera' and 'svanu' mean in the verse 'Ustaj mala veži kera svanu zora bjela.'
I cannot find a reliable meaning for these words:(

I understand that you feel the accordion is missing, but I haven't heard the original and this version seems very good. How nice that you have been advised about certain words in this post, I don't understand the language but what you transmit is very nice.
Awesome rendition! Kera is from ker which is another word for dog (Pas). And the "svanu zora" (svanu from svanuti) translates as dawn is breaking. So the entire translation would be something like "Wake up little girl, tie the dog, the dawn is breaking".

Is the father going off to war? That is what I have guessed, even though he never says it in the song.
You can speculate about the meaning. He's talking to his lover and he's either going to war, to work abroad or maybe he's just drinking and fooling around so he tells her to blow out the candle and not wait for him anymore.

This should be written like this: 'Oj, oraje oraje.' It would mean ‘Oh my walnut tree’, since ‘oraj’ (орах) is a walnut tree :)
