Our Little Quota

in The MINIMALISTlast year (edited)

“You don’t take care of yourself as well as you should. I was going home from Church with my sister. We took a cab and started the journey. There was a guy already in the cab so we greeted him(which he didn’t respond to as he was eating a banana) and got into the cab. On the right-hand side of the road which is the lane we were taking home, there’s this huge road construction up ahead so vehicles going that way would have to circumvent to the other side of the road and follow through till it was okay to switch to the appropriate lane.

We did that and as I was discussing with my sister, the guy stretched his hand, momentarily blocking my view and my face and then his banana peels came whooshing away from our side of the cab and outside the window. I was silent for a second, too stunned to continue with the conversation. My sister and I kept exchanging glances but we didn’t say a word. The man on the other hand whipped up his phone and started fiddling with it without a care in the world.

Luckily, he alighted a couple of minutes afterwards as he’d reached his stop and I couldn’t help blurting out the moment he was away. “So his house was nearby and he couldn’t even wait to fling his trash.” My sister shook her head and said it was all about orientation and some people just weren’t wired like we are not to do certain things. We talked about the concepts of littering and hygiene in general till we reached our stop.

In the same vein, I had a conversation with a few of my coursemates from school a few weeks back and the question was, “What’s your contribution to society?” What that meant was, what are the little things you do that may not exactly count but go a long way in improving our world? When it was my turn, I said that my contribution to society is that if I have trash with me, probably from a snack I ate or paper I no longer need, I would hold it with me like my life depends on it till I get home before I dispose of it the right way.

A few of them laughed and said that it didn’t count but I had to give them reasons why it did. I don’t just get it. My state has been awarded as the cleanest state in the country at least five times consecutively. On some days, I pass by some streets and I’m like, “Are you sure the committee in charge of that award checked everywhere?” I almost want to wonder how other states are.

But I do agree that most of the roads in my state are pretty clean. Which is why I wonder why a full-grown adult would see a road and decide to just get the place filthy with his trash. I mean whether or not that place is immaculate or littered with trash, I think it tells more about us as a people when we do what is right and dispose of trash properly.

It’s one trait that I’m glad I inculcated in my friends. Not littering the environment. There’s this sense of satisfaction I feel when I calmly dispose of items, do a little picking around my environment to ensure it’s free of waste, you know.... those kinds of things. It’s giving responsible woman. It’s giving woman that knows what she’s doing and works towards achieving her goals. I know it’s looking dramatic but leaving off the minimalist part, even as a person, we owe it to ourselves to inculcate lifestyles that would better ourselves and our environment as a whole.

Another major thing I do is planting. There was this thing in high school where if you plucked a fruit from the school gardens you were made to plant ten. Quite silly then, I know. But somehow it was a way of teaching us to embrace afforestation as a practical lifestyle. But besides that, planting different fruits and vegetables not only increases aeration in the environment but also fosters healthy eating habits. It’s a win-win.

I got back from school for a brief holiday and I got to see our garden at home. I haven’t gotten to taking pictures but I was glad to see that the rest of the family has been taking good care of it. The harmattan season doesn’t do well for most of these plants but they were green and flourishing meaning that they are being watered regularly.

I’d like to say that as long as we are in this world, we have no other choice but to treat it the way we would treat our own because that’s in fact what our environment is. We don’t have to do very grand things but we can do the little ones. Our little quota in bettering the world we live in.

Some people are like that. Whenever I am in the bus and I see someone throwing something out the window, I cringe.

If it's children, I immediately correct them and tell them to learn to dispose things properly. I once told an adult(politely) I might add to try to dispose things properly and I got the insult of my life, it would have escalated to something else had I given response to his insults.

Sometimes orientation doesn't seem to work as some people do this things purposely but I guess we would have to try to correct them and hope they don't break our heads in the process.

Thank you for sharing.

I was just thinking this to myself and I said if I corrected them, would I be able to stand the washing I'd get? Especially in this dear country of ours where everyone's blood is hot so to speak.
We can only hope dear. For the adults, they might say that they can't learn to be left handed at old age. But we'll try our best. Thank you for this dear and do sorry for the late reply.🌺

So we are even many, people that are thoughtful with how they dispose their trash. I think it's something I learned from my mother. It's extreme as putting trash in my pocket—things that wouldn't mess me up, though—and wait till I get home or find a suitable place to dispose them.

You're healing the world with your not-so-little superpower, Fangy. Teach that man a lesson when next you find him.

Lol. Please I hope not to find him. It'll be on sight!

And I'm really glad that you had values like these instilled in you from little. We all should learn to do our bit and no matter how few we are, we can achieve great things together.
Thank you, Minion.🌺

I will love to live with you. But I'll manage someone who thinks like you. Lol

Which state are you from?

My state is also reputed as one of the cleanest in my country, but I when I stroll along the road, I can't help but wonder how the rating works. The gutters are smelling and people still litter the streets with refuse.

I see people doing businesses besides smelling gutters. "Why can't they pay someone to clean it?" I often wonder.

The state government have to be strict with environmental laws. There are no waste-bins along the road.

But despite the carelessness of the government, we, individually must do our bit.

The earth is ours, and it's our duty to make it conducive.

Thanks for sharing this. It's really a thoughtful piece.

Thank you for reading as well dear and if your state is the cleanest, maybe your state is mine as well. Hehe.
Even people that ease themselves on the road are on that margin too. It's really wrong.

So sorry for the late reply. I hope you're doing well.🌺

Sure! I am doing well. Thanks. Enjoy the rest of your day.

Hello @jhymi. You set an excellent example for us all. And as a young adult with friends your age, your environmental practices are bound to affect some of them. Not all will catch on, but perhaps one or two. If we as a society can embrace this concept wholeheartedly of improving our environment no matter how small the task, then maybe there will be less individuals littering with a "don't care" attitude.

In fact, like you, when I'm on an errand, I always have available in my car small trash bags. If my bag becomes full, I'll pull over near a trash bin and deposit it.

As a champion of recycling and a minimalist lifestyle enthusiast, I applaud you and your sister's mindset. Keep up the excellent attitude.

Take care and have a good rest of your week.

This is such a heartwarming comment and I thank you for it. We can only try to do our bit and dare to hope that those around us follow suit. The more the merrier and the better for us all. So sorry for the late reply dearest @justclickindiva. Hope you're doing well.🤗

You're welcome @jhymi. You are correct when you say that we can only do our best and our small part of a larger environmental problem. At the end of the day, we can say, "well done".

There is no time as late; only a non-response. I appreciate your engagement and support.

Take care.

That's right. There's that sense of satisfaction when you see a clean place. People are like that. They throw things out of the bus as if they'll sweep it off immediately.

Hello dearest fashionable dreemer. Happy Wednesday! I hope you are having a good day with that sweet smile of yours to bless our view. Enjoy your day, and don't forget to take a long breath. I waltzed in from #dreemport, for I am an amazing #dreemer. An awesomely made #dreemerforlife.

No one is a born cleaner so we shouldn't have the mentality that someone is available to get rid of our trash. Thanks for stopping by, dear Balikis.🌺

Yeah, nobody is born a cleaner. That's correct. You are welcome and enjoy your weekend.

Beautifully put. In truth, orientation plays a big role in human actions and inaction. The grooming I got from the boarding house I attended whilst growing up doesn't allow me to throw trash away willy-nilly. I hold it in my bag or purse till I see a trash can to dispose of it.

#dreemerforlife

And that's how it should be. And for those that didn't have this orientation, adapting to positive habits is the way. I see somewhere clean and I have it within my heart that the last thing I want to do is to be the person that messes it up.

Thanks for stopping by dear.

The pleasure is always mine💕

You have touched a high point. It is very unpleasant to see people polluting through the vehicle window. I've seen videos on social media of people chasing someone else to return their trash to their vehicle. Although in some cases this is what it causes us to do, what we need to do is to educate ourselves more. Greetings @jhymi

Thank you for this dear @aaalviarez and I couldn't have put it any better myself. We've got to take good care of our trash since we're not trash.🌺

I thought I was just the only one that does that, keeping my trash till I get home. I feel guilty whenever I do that. Is just not me.
