Typhoon PDA Practice
I lived in Coningsby, in Lincolnshire briefly. Very close to the runway of the RAF base there. The base is a very active base, being the home of 3(F), XI(F), 12 and 29 squadrons. It is also the home of The Battle Of Britain Memorial Flight. It is an active front line base. Most days there would be some activity, usually the jets - the Eurofighter Typhoon FGR4

The Typhoon display team for 2022 is from 29 Squadron and like all previous Typhoon display teams (and other display teams) they need to pass their PDA - Public Display Authorisation. This involves a lot of flight practice, with the pilots pushing their aircraft close to its limits.

These shots are from a display practice in 2021 - the livery changed in May 2021, to a sleek black paint job, with Union Flag emblems (and it really does look the business). As you can see, the aircraft often came in very low overhead.

I miss watching the display practices, although this year's pilot, Flight Lieutenant Adam O’Hare, has passed his PDA, so now its just a matter of displays and maintaining currency.

I spent most of last week in Elveden Forest so could continually hear the USAF KC-135 "Stratotankers" and F15 "Eagles" out of RAF Mildenhall, didn't manage to get any shots though due to the trees. Seeing the Typhoon at airshows is always a highlight, and I've been under the flight path of the QRF twice - they are beautiful planes in my eyes, will be a sad day when they are retired.
I need to get down to Mildenhall, I've not yet photographed the F15s. I like the Typhoons, but also really liked the Tonkas, was gutted when they were retired.
Mildenhall is interesting. At least in theory there are V-22 Osprey's stationed there. The only time I actually saw the Osprey out of Mildenhall was when they were around London during Obama's visit. Military airframes have such long development cycles and operational lifetimes, that it always makes you feel old when one goes away. Harriers, Tornados and the Vulcan all made me sad that I wouldn't see them anymore.
Living in Lincoln we had Vulcans at Waddo to the south and Scampton to the north. Like you, I was gutted when they were retired. Never saw many Harriers but always loved to see then when I did get the chance. So many good aircraft gone.
WOW!!! Those shots are incredible. Such a beautiful aircraft.
@cyberrascal42 many thanks, much appreciated. And yes, they are pretty photogenic aren't they
And thanks for the reblog
