At The Polls

The season finale of everyone's favorite reality TV show, Election! is currently in full swing (slog?) here in the US. Opted to tune into Photoshop instead, so here's some photos from the local scenes.

Wandered down to the neighborhood high school turned polling place this morning, to write my name a bunch and see if my photojournalist hat still fit.

Ever have those dreams where you just keep finding pistols in your pockets? Got a late start to the morning thanks to a few of those, which turned out to be my good luck and misfortune.

There were issues early in the morning which resulted in hour(s) long lines and difficulties voting but by the time this night owl flew in that had dissipated. Not sad about missing out on standing in line but I was hoping for some shots of that.

In Kentucky, the polls close at 6 pm. With the recent time change, golden hour starts well before that, so I moseyed back to the polls around 1630. Was hoping for lines of after work voters in the setting sun but it was just gloom and a steady trickle of folks.

And some rather tired poll workers. Didn't get the chance to speak with them much but some had been there since 0600 or earlier. This one was counting down the minutes until the doors closed, twelve hours was enough.

Everybody got an explanation of the ballot before they were turned loose to play fill in the dots. Apparently that's not the same as connect the dots.

I know that look. The poll worker in the white shirt has an expression not dissimilar from the one restaurant staff get when a customer walks in two minutes before closing time.

We now returned you to your regularly scheduled dystopia . . .

Sort:

I'm surprised they actually let you take photos. In my country (Romania) photographing inside the voting area is strictly forbidden and gives you jail time if you do.

Nice shots!

Rules here vary from state to state. Some places actually encourage people to monitor polling with video.

The reason for so strict rules here is, there were cases when people were paid to vote for a certain candidate and got paid after voting, but they had to show proof, which was a photo of the voting paper. Voting here happens behind curtains, so they could do that, but if you're caught, that means jail. I hope no one is so stupid to risk their freedom for a few bucks.

People in America risk their freedom for a lot less than a few bucks. That's why we have the largest prison population in the world.

That one's more on politicians than people, our crime rates aren't much different from similar countries but our punishment schemes certainly are.

Terrible 🙁

There's some restrictions on shooting inside polling places here, but it's mostly centered on the ballots and not taking anything that could be construed as proof for vote buying. I'm pretty sure I could have gotten at least some access inside to shoot but I played it safe with these and actually shot everything from outside with a zoom lens. Did take a few inside with my phone but forgot about those when I was putting this together.

Thank you! :)

THE DAY !
good luck to the GREAT county

Der tag!
Unfortunately it ain't looking too great today...

i saw the results.....

Haha I thought walking around in the street in your house slippers was only a thing here. We get folks in their dressing gowns and pajamas too

But the results have left me in a state of deep gloom...

Gloom, denial, and a heaping helping of 'Are you fucking shitting me?'

There's a part of me that thinks: well, you asked for it, you'll get it. But then I remember that half the USA didn't vote for this

It's easy to think like that, there's plenty of that here too but life is always a lot messier than that.

Ha, no, that's definitely a thing here too. Every once in a while you'll still catch a glimpse of someone with their hair in curlers out and about.

Even to the supermarket?

Especially there. There's even a website dedicated to some of the more unusual stuff seen at Wal-Mart.

Hehe yes I know it 😁

I love the second photo. She looks so cute, and those shoes! 😍

Ha, I love that one too! Saw her and those shoes coming and had to set up for a shot.
