THE WHITE AND THE RED PAVILION

The red pavilion was built in 1808 on the Kamp, a triangular green space of about 2 hectares. The red pavilion is an octagonal half-timbered building and was originally used as a music venue and a bar. Today it serves as a gallery for an art association. It mainly exhibits modern art by artists from the region. Unfortunately, I was not able to visit the gallery because it is being renovated for a new exhibition.

Der rote Pavilion wurde im Jahr 1808 auf dem Kamp, einer ca. 2 Hektar großen, dreieckigen Grünanlage, errichtet. Der rote Pavilion ist ein achteckiges Fachwerkgebäude und wurde ursprünglich als Musikstätte sowie als Ausschank benutzt. Heute dient er einem Kunstverein als Galerie. Ausgestellt wird dort hauptsächlich moderne Kunst von Künstlern aus der Region. Leider konnte ich die Galerie nicht besuchen, weil diese gerade für eine neue Ausstellung umgebaut wird.

Around 10:30 pm I started with my pictures. At this time of night, there were no more people on the road, even though the green area is in the middle of the town of Bad Doberan. Only a cat was watching what I was doing. I set up the tripod and adjusted the camera. I started the exposure, after a few seconds I covered the lens and turned the camera around the optical axis in 5 steps. After each step I took the cover off the lens for a few seconds.

Gegen 22:30 Uhr begann ich mit meinen Bilder. Um diese Zeit war kein Mensch mehr unterwegs, obwohl die Grünanlage mitten in der Stadt Bad Doberan liegt. Einzig eine Katze beobachtete mein Tun gespannt. Ich stellte das Stativ auf und richtete die Kamera aus. Ich startete die Belichtung, nach einigen Sekunden deckte ich das Objektiv ab und drehte die Kamera in 5 Schritten um die optische Achse. Nach jedem Schritt nahm ich für einige Sekunden die Abdeckung vom Objektiv.

I then rotated the camera in 30° steps with different orientations of the camera.

Im Anschluss drehte ich die Kamera in 30° Schritten mit unterschiedlicher Ausrichtung der Kamera.

The white pavilion is located opposite the red pavilion. The octagonal building was also erected in 1813 and served as a music pavilion. After renovation, the pavilion has served as a restaurant since 1976.

Der weiße Pavilion befindet sich gegenüber des roten Pavilions. Das ebenfalls achteckige Gebäude wurde 1813 errichtet und diente als Musikpavilion. Nach der Sanierung dient der Pavilion seit 1976 als Restaurant.

Here I have turned the camera 180°. The alignment was not quite so easy here. The path does not go exactly towards the entrance door. The two pavilions in the result should be exactly aligned. After about 10 minutes I had found the right place for the camera and aligned the centre of the picture exactly with the centre of the entrance door. Such shots can drive you crazy at times.

Hier habe ich die Kamera um 180° gedreht. Die Ausrichtung war hier nicht ganz so einfach. Der Weg geht nicht genau auf die Eingangstür zu. DIe beiden Pavilions im Ergebnis sollten exakt übereinander ausgerichtet sein. Nach ungefähr 10 Minuten hatte ich die passende Stelle für die Kamera gefunden und die Bildmitte exakt auf die Mitte der Eingangstür ausgerichtet. Solche Aufnahmen können einen zuweilen in den Wahnsinn treiben.

From the same position I then recorded rotations with three, five and seven steps.

Aus der gleichen Position nahm ich dann noch Rotationen mit drei, fünf und sieben Schritten auf.

Here I panned the camera during the exposure. Other movements are also conceivable. Because of the many possible combinations, the possibilities in kinetic photography are almost limitless.

Hier habe ich die Kamera während der Belichtung geschwenkt. Auch andere Bewegungen sind denkbar. Durch die vielen Kombinationsmöglichkeiten sind die Möglichkeiten in der kinetischen Fotografie nahezu grenzenlos.

I changed the position of the camera and then took these two pictures at the end. Slowly it became unpleasantly cool. I didn't have a jacket with me, I was on summer holiday after all. Bad Doberan is a very pleasant place, I think. I will go there again as soon as possible.

Ich änderte die Position der Kamera und nahm dann zum Schluß noch diese beiden Bilder auf. Langsam wurde es unangenhm kühl. Ich hatte keine Jacke mit, ich war schließlich im Sommerurlaub. Bad Doberan ist ein sehr angenehmer Ort, wie ich finde. Ich werde sich so bald als möglich ein weiteres Mal dorthin fahren.

Besides the cathedral and the 13th-century monastery complex, I was very impressed by the steam-powered Molli railway. It runs like a tram through the middle of the city.

Neben dem Münster und der Klosteranlage aus dem 13. Jahrhundert hat mich die dampfbetriebene Eisenbahn Molli sehr beeindruckt. Diese fährt wie eine Straßenbahn mitten durch die Stadt.

WHAT IS LIGHT PAINTING?

Light painting is a unique form of art. The darkness is illuminate by the artist with diverse light sources and light traces are paint into the picture with various light tools. Various techniques are use, such as camera rotation or other movements of the camera during the exposure. The creative possibilities are almost unlimited. All the pictures were taken during one single exposure. Apart from denoising, sharpening, cutting and possibly adjusting the white balance, the pictures are not processed on the computer.
