Look how carefully this one approached the feeding spot in our garden.
Squirrels protect themselves with their tails, and this one thought that there might be another squirrel in the garden.
No storyline here, as I just want to show you some cute squirrel shots. Territory is everything, and squirrels, like other animals and birds, protect their space and food. Their babies and nests are also in the area of their territory, so it is vital that they are in control of what and who enters it. They are also very competitive, as on occasion they steal each other's food.
One would sit in a tree and watch where another one buries a nut, and as soon as the other one is gone the one in the tree runs over to steal the nut. At times, they also forget where they buried the nuts, and quite often trees start growing all over the place. But they are very agile little beings, and we love to watch them when they are playing games. It is amazing to see how squirrels can move at speed through the trees.
Tell me if you can see the second squirrel at the left of the picture.
Safe is better than sorry, as the one at the right decided to disappear.
Another of the siblings.
And here is yet another one, up high with a nut.
This little one balanced its nut with its paws on the wall.
Just look at that little mouth.
Just as in our lives everything cannot only turn up rosy, as at times there are many thorns. This little gecko got trapped in the frame of our backdoor, and it flattened the life out of it.
We want to wish everyone a happy Friday and a great weekend. Time certainly speeds along nowadays, as just the other day we were still in February. Now March will speed along and soon the Easter season will be upon us in April. Unbelievable, isn't it?
Just the other day I was 21 years old and now I am almost 71. So where have the 50 years gone? Life is like that for us, and we just have to accept it. My one major dream is to complete the correspondence and communications of the new Papillon project that will cover the malnourished little children, which has now been dragging for months due to all of the red tape. Hopefully it will be done soon, and then we can go ahead to deliver the food to the children.
Such is life.
I hope you enjoyed the pictures and the story.

Oh my gosh this is too cute! our garden is also filled with geckos. I try to not disturb them too much but we have cats that have no remorse and myself and the kids have often needed to rescue the poor little things and scold the cats. It's in their nature though so I can't bee too angry with them.
Growing up and feeding the squirrels as the highlight of my childhood. My gran had a flat across the road and we would often visit to enjoy the beautiful flowers, fish, bird and of course squirrels which we affectionately call "fancy rats' because of their tails (making them look fancy) and their ability to be tamed, like wild rats.

Ah yes, the cats, and we have many problems with them here, as they are always after the sunbirds. Luckily, they don't go after the geckos, but the fiscals and the sparrows do. It is a constant fight to keep them away.
I am glad that you also had some great experiences with the squirrels, and at our old house we had squirrel families staying and breeding in the trees of our garden. One became so tame that she searched in our pockets for nuts when we arrived home after work.
Btw, please tell your hubby that I have a message waiting for him in Discord.

I managed to see the tail and part of the body and the head of the second squirrel just behind some stones. They are elusive but beautiful creatures and your post has been illustrative about their behavior. Thanks for sharing.
Great that you saw the other squirrel, and we love all of the tricks that they can get up to. !LOL
Oh, thanks for this
The new Papillion project is a space with a true mission of humanity and I wish you all success.Feeding children is a very noble task.I congratulate you.
I hope everything shortly
Thank you for the wishes, and times are getting tougher over here, so it's always a pleasure to help the little ones. Been doing it for many years at Papillon and one has to keep up with the times and the needs of the poor.

Glad that you could see the squirrel.
I hope you'll have a wonderful birthday 🥳 71 is quite an accomplishment!
I love the squirrel pictures, they're so fun! It's sad about the gecko, but at least he didn't suffer long...
Only 71 in April my friend.
Yep, we feel the same, and they can get up to all kinds of things. My wife pasted the gecko on one of her bookmarks. You are right, as it must have been an instant death!

Such cute animals eh? We have many of them in Canada, all running up trees and playing as you hike in the forest.
Oh yeah, cute indeed, and our squirrels were imported to South Africa from Canada by a Cape governor named Cecil John Rhodes during the 1800s. Since then, they have proliferated in numbers. !LOL

Beautiful creatures. Their tails are very fluffy.
Later in the season, their tails become ragged as they use it as a shield when they get into a fight.
