The Art of the Studio Shoot

Greetings photo lovers. I dont post here too often and it's been a little while. I mostly post in C/ASEAN HIVE as the engagement there is very good. But I do love the posts I see here and also know there is some very talented shooters here. Today I'm working on a photo shoot in a pop up studio that me and my buddy have set up in a furniture showroom. We are cataloging all the furniture so the owner can create an online webshop of their pieces.

My buddy Kimmo (the shooter) and I have experimented a lot over the last couple of years with product and furniture shooting. Sometimes with black backgrounds, sometimes with dark or clear glass below for reflections. For this shoot we set up a white cotton backdrop and ordered some semi gloss white laminate for the floor. It gives a gentle reflection and shadow without being overpowering. It's the first time we have used it and it's working pretty well so far. Although the barstool image above we photoshopped out the reflection as I want to try creating .pngs on a totally transparent background for the webpage.

Today is the second day of shooting and we are making pretty good progress. Here are a few of the edited images from the first day. What do you think folks? I'm pretty happy with the way they have turned out and I'm looking forward to getting them set up with a nicely designed webpage....

Lets take a look at another shoot we did for the same client a little while ago. That time we used black floor and background with a piece of dark glass under each piece to give the reflection style. I'm still torn between what I like best when it comes to studio images for furnishings - black or white? What do you guys think?

Anyway people I hope you like these shots - I know that product photography is often not as nuanced and creative as life, but I quite enjoy it and the pressure is quite low - we always have a box of beer on ice and spend plenty of time to spend on each piece. The client is very relaxed and doesn't push us to shoot as much as possible in a day.

I'll finish up with these 2 funny pics of her daughter. In real life she is the sweetest, happiest kid. But as soon as we point the camera at here, well, it's game over! Hahaha.

These are all awesome shots and it's cool to see the setup and how you prepare for the shoot. Great results and that kid is too cute! hahaha Great post!

Hey thanks man! Yeah we got some pretty good material in the end. The little kid was super cute but very uncooperative..:) I think shooting kid portraits is a tough job!

They always say kids and animals are the toughest to work with! hahahaha

Have to agree on that!

😂

You are obviously good at what you do to get repeat business and having a happy client is what counts and pays the bills. Interesting to see how you go about things. I knew a food photographer and that was fascinating to what ingredients they used. Mashed potato for ice cream so it wouldn't melt and spoil the shot.

Thanks @cryptoandcoffee! Yeah food photography is a whole different beast and something I have not dabbled in too much. So many tricks involved in that field as you rightly mention. Fake steam, fake ice cream, etc etc.

Hii! thanks for your input - I think I prefer the white bg also! Where is ur studio located? I looked at your profile and ur work is just super! I followed!
