Turkey vultures hanging out in the field

These big birds come around whenever something is dead, they are the trash men of the forest. So important they are considered a protected species. These birds are scavengers and will pick over anything that has died and is laying around. Or in this case a gut pile from a recent deer kill they are feeding on.

As they fill their bellies they will take a break and sun themselves by spreading their wings and warming up their bodies. Soon other kinds of birds will show up as well, but for the moment the vultures are at the top and get the meal all to themselves.

As each of them find the guts, they swoop in and sometimes seemingly tackle the other vultures in aggression.

I guess there is some kind of picking order when it comes to these birds.

Some more bird politics going on it would seem.

There are already a few in the bush, more land as they spot the yummy snacks.

Some vultures will feed and then back off for a bit, and then come back for more.

Crows were there as well, but seemed they would stay away when the pack of vultures were around.

More showed up, at some point there was over six of them.

They come and go, but all seem to know about the gut pile now. They will probably feed on it until its just bones. Great for the environment, glad to have these birds.

More sunning going on, its cool to see how big their wings are.

I can see why they care called "turkey" vultures.. from a far they look quite similar. Though I am sure they taste absolutely terrible being a scavenger compared to a turkey that mostly eats bugs.

The crows show up in more numbers, but still keep their distance from the vultures.

I guess the bigger birds do not put up with smaller birds feeding on their find.

It is a waiting game for the crows, they want to eat too but waiting for the big birds to leave.

Seems like they have filled their bellies and now waiting to digest a bit before they can take off. They will eat so much they need to wait awhile before they can become airborne it would seem.

The stuffed vulture waddle.

Don't stop moving when the turkey vultures are overhead lol. They provide a vital function in nature and I don't mind them at all. After Christmas dinner I did a little stuffed vulture waddle myself :D

Haha right.. do not want to be their dinner one day.

So true, they really clean up after everyone else.

hehe I do too.

Here are a couple of interesting things about buzzards.

In the mornings buzzards can not fly until the wind picks up.

Another thing about them is they have one mate for life.

A few years ago we found one dead under our powerlines and its mate was sitting on the pole, he/she still stays around our house, it is sad. They are always in groups and it is alone, I guess not wanting to leave the area where he/she last saw their mate.

Oh interesting, I did not know about those facts.

That is indeed sad. I see that with geese sometimes too.

It's crazy just how big they are. I used to see them on my friends farm all the time when I would hang out there. Scary almost!

Hah yeah they are huge.. sometimes I see them standing on the roof of my house spreading their wings.. its a trip.

Didn't they shy away seeing you? :P

Not really, other birds do though.

Had a few of those the other day here and it's interesting to watch how they interact with each other. That was until a bald eagle came swooping in lol. Was one of the coolest things I've seen!

It sure is fun to watch. We got some bald eagles a few times back when we left some deer guts out. Hoping we get to see them again.. They are the king of the birds.. everything stays away from the eagles..lol

One thing that is very nice is observing crows they are so intelligent 🤣

Yeah they sure are smart.. them and blue jays are very similar.

Good evening my brother

A beautiful bird with very unique habits, you managed to photograph it very well. It's amazing

Have a nice day my brother

Ah thanks much

Hope you do too.

You're welcome my brother ♥️

The shots are successful. Like documentary photography.

Vultures seem to be a bit lazy animals. They prefer prey that is ready. They do not search for prey at its source.

Hah yeah it does, and they do.. slow moving.

They're really important for the environment especially the wild, they play a big role in cleaning up killed of dead animals that ordinarily would take a while to decompose. You told a beautiful story around the vultures.

They sure do.. very important. And thanks, glad I conveyed my experience well in the post.

I have a question is the lumia gh6 a good camera for a beginner or would you recommend another one? Because I'm looking for something for my wife for her birthday, and the photos and shots turned out really great.

Its a good camera but its nearly $1000 right now.

If that is in your price range I would recommend it.

Thanks for help it is my range😁👍

Águilas turkas me gusta ...

I like eagles too.. yet to get any pictures of them though.

It's a devastating fighter, nice shoot brother @solominer

Thanks, glad you liked them.

they seem very friendly and I really like seeing them🥰

Hah I like seeing them from a distance.. they probably really smell bad.

Oh they most certainly do. See my comment.

These turkey birds, if I know them in my country but as "Auras Tiñosa" are very disgusting they feed on dead animals bro.

In my country Cuba 🇨🇺 there are hundreds in a week flying in the
skies. The truth if they are well Big, but they present a bad smell. Thanks for sharing and Merry Christmas @solominer 🎄😊👏🎆 !!!!

Yep that is them, same thing I think.

Haha yeah I bet they smell.. sticking their heads in nasty dead stuff.

Thanks man, hope you had a good one too.

👏🌺👏🌺

🤠

Great shots

thanks

I agree that even though they don't look pretty, birds are certainly very important for the balance of nature.

Yep.. not the best lookers but very important.

Good thing it's not harmful to human.😄 Now I know that turkey had more taste than the vultures that eat dead animals.😄

Hah yeah unless I am dead I do not think they want anything to do with me.

Hahaah, I could say, it is safe to be alive.😄

Nice photos. I heard that these birds are capable of eating bones.

Oh interesting, I would not be surprised if they could.

thanks

There is no doubt that nature is a much better organiser of a functioning co-existence. While we can't think of anything better than to bury 'things that are no longer usable' deep in the ground or (even worse) to throw them in a landfill and burn all the 'waste', the fauna knows exactly how and what has to work. 😉

Yep, nature just has a way of dealing with the waste.. glad to have the vultures and other animals that feed on the dead stuff.. a much needed part of life.

They are the natural scavenger of our environment. They play a great role in our environment.
Have a great day! 🍀

Yep they sure do.. thanks hope you do too

Your photos are really cool, you managed to catch them playing around, it's very rare to get photos of these birds and you can video them.

They hang out but its good to see them closer up now with my new lens.

your new product is really very cool, yes, the bird really looks very detailed

I guess there is some kind of picking order when it comes to these birds.

I believe that's referred to as a pecking order lol

Wow... The birds that come to your field are beautiful, the crows are very intelligent, they eat delicious snacks around your land.

Did they kill him first before they devoured my friend, or was it just a carcass?

Hehe yeah lots for them to eat.

It was already dead, my foreman killed a deer and dropped off the guts in the fields for the animals to eat.

Beautiful shots, photographing birds is always a good challenge, some are more still, others more agile and so on.

Having the time to observe Nature like this is therapeutic. Then I remember the food web, Nature is so organized that one shouldn't doubt that there's a Master Of The Universe up above.

So I am bumpin' along down the interstate way back when...

I see a couple Florida Vultures (also protected) working over a road kill on the shoulder. I am watching them as they take off and one of the nasty bastards flies right into my path away from me.

I got the truck slowed down to about 40 mph before it hit dead center in my windshield nearly coming thru it. Had i hit it full speed I am sure it would have been in my lap. I was lucky the shattering glass shards did not take out my eyes.

So I stop and put my gloves on to pull this giant bird off of my mirror braces where it had slid over and got stuck on. A giant bird that was eating dead flesh and is now... "Dead Flesh"

It smelled so bad I was wretching trying to hold my lunch of "dead flesh" (chicken) down.

I grabbed it and thinking it was gonna be heavy gave it a hard toss and the damn thong flew three times farther than I thought it would.

I woulda thought "dead flesh" would be heavier?

Challenging ride home with a severly spiderweb shattered windshiels that I was sure would collapse the rest of the way in at any moment. Slow ride. It did not.

Hello solominer, maybe you can help me. I am looked out of posting in Peakd lost the 4 digit code. Thanks the big birds are fun to watch ..

Hey there, I think you need to contact Peakd support for them to help reset it.. I use Hivesigner so not fimular with the peaklock tool.
