If there is a city where history and the tribulations of the 20th century come alive, it is the small town of
Dunkirk . This town is renowned for the battles concerning the withdrawal of French and British forces during World War II. The operation, known as
Operation Dynamo, involved the evacuation of over
338,000 British and French soldiers from the French port of Dunkirk between May 26 and June 4, 1940. Sometimes referred to as the Miracle of Dunkirk, this evacuation was a significant boost to British morale during the war.

In the city are located museums, which describe in detail this operation hour by hour, providing a truly powerful experience. We visited the Fort de Dunes Museum, a fortress that served as the headquarters of the French defensive line, defending the access to the beaches where fierce battles took place. You can explore everything there with well-presented commentary. If you have a vivid imagination, you can almost picture the events as they unfolded.
Another museum, located directly in the town, is called the
Dunkirk 1940 Museum - Operation Dynamo. As mentioned, this museum describes the operation hour by hour, allowing you to witness the tightening grip on the retreating forces.

Seeing a documentary is one thing, but visiting the actual locations where soldiers lay and died, witnessing the exact spots where they fought and survived, and understanding the harsh conditions they endured offer an entirely different perspective. You can see the precise numbers of those killed and the survivors, how they defended themselves, and grasp the immense scale of the operation. This was just a fragment of World War II. The whole experience left me with a deeply somber feeling that I couldn't quite shake off.
I am very grateful that there are still places and people dedicated to telling the stories of World War II's hardships. I would encourage everyone to visit such sites to truly understand the helplessness and horror of war, in the hope that we can prevent future world conflicts.

The city of Dunkirk has certainly recovered, but you can still see traces of the war that remain as a constant reminder of the massive scale of the massacre. Today, it is an intriguing city with truly beautiful beaches perfect for watching the sunset. Yet, when you remember that half a million people were crammed here, it still sends chills down your spine.
I highly recommend everyone visit this town on the border with Belgium and explore the aforementioned museums. Additionally, stay for the sunset and take a walk along the beaches, which are truly beautiful and unique. I was there with friends, and we ultimately enjoyed both the stunning sunset and the rich history of the place.
