~DIY~ Let’s Build a Planter Box ~ Step by Step

in DTube5 years ago (edited)

It’s spring time in my neck of the woods and I am feeling like I am a little late to the garden growing party. So if you are wanting to know how to build a raised planter box... I am the Man for the job.

Stick with me as I show you how I have been building my new raised planter boxes. There are a thousand ways to build them and this is my latest design. It is relatively simple and the cost isn’t too bad.

Here is the d.tube link since for some reason it isn’t showing up on my post....

Thanks for watching and I hope this sparks some creativity for you to go out and create something awesome!!

Until Next Time...

I thought I show you the new strawberry plant box I built today for my grandson. He has strawberry plants growing the last couple years in flower bed boxes and they needed more room for expansion. It's not as thick as yours but it's strawberries and not potatoes. I did it just the way you described except for the legs as 4x4's are rather expensive. I have some in the basement but I am saving them for a bigger project. At first I was just going to use some blocks of wood to keep it lifted off the ground then decided instead to raid my grand kids box of stackable blocks they love to play with then attached with some screws then nails. Hopefully this will last him a couple years. It was rather inexpensive since I already had the wire I just had to buy the boards and the burlap.

It's sitting over an area in my yard where a house use to be, there's a lot of the concrete structure left under the dirt in that area so it's a hit and miss to use for just about anything but grass or a scattered wild flower bed. Next up is one for the pumpkins he's started, that one will sit over a grassy area where they can expand all over the place.

Nice work!!! It’s awesome to see my project inspired you to build your own!! You can never go wrong with strawberries. I actually have a few starting to ripen up.

My strawberries in these boxes are doing great this year. These are a great space saver. Each box is made from 2 - 2x12’s and 1 - 2X4 then screwed into the metal posts woo a metal “L” bracket.

Great job and keep on keeping on

I thought about going that route...putting two planters between cemented in post but since I am doing some other work and changing stuff up in the yard I decided to go with this box over the area I described. In a couple years if I have the rest completed then I'll probably do something more permanent like what you have displayed. Those boxes have a wood bottom? I like the fence idea, it's a great idea actually but the back of my yard is heavily shaded.

You gotta do what works for you. Take other people’s ideas and create your own space. Everyone’s space is a little different and it is never a “one size fits all”.

You are doing great!! Keep up the good work!!

When looking at wood online before I went shopping they had what they called a no voc finish gardeners could put on their wood to help preserve it longer, it's suppose to be safe to use...you ever heard of it or used it?

Thanks for looking out!
🍻 Cheers 🍻

Ah, I so need these. It’s been on my todo list for forever. Thanks for the inspiration and very well done tutorial 👏🏼

With the weather the way is has been up here in WA, I just can't help but get out and build something. I am glad I can be a bit of an inspiration for you to get off your butt and go build something. 😂😂 This one is a pretty basic design but it is a great starting point. I have made a few from old pallets they are just smaller and I have them on my deck for flowers.

Thanks for the burlap and chicken wire idea. I've been thinking about building a tiered down front from a four foot high retainer type wall that I could plant vegetables in but kept wondering how to do it planter style that allowed for drainage at the bottom. That way you wouldn't lose any of your crop due to to dry or wet of a season.

I have also used some cedar fence plank places across the bottom with about 1/2 inch gap between. Then place the burlap over it. You could also cover the whole bottom and drill a bunch of 1/2 inch or 3/4 inch holes al over it. There are quite a few ways to make a good draining box. The way I tend to do it depends on what I have laying around. Lol

I had thought about making the bottoms out of wood like when making a regular planter then drilling holes in it. The price of wood makes that rather expensive compared to your idea, replacing the burlap every so often also wouldn't seem to be quite as expensive replacing wood that could develop wood rot over time as using treated lumber wouldn't seem like a very good idea. I appreciate you thoughts on the subject.

It’s crazy how to expensive wood can get. That is part of the reason I hoard all the scraps. Lol

Great video on how to construct the raised box. Your videos are so clear and the colors so vivid. When I get the time, I would love to learn how to do videos, I bought a GoPro years ago and never really figured out how to use it. You know me and technology, we're not the best of friends. Love your chop saw set up, looks like a 12-inch blade, and the table it is fastened to is something I've wanted for a while, maybe this is the year I spring for one.

Believe it or not I make my videos all on my iPhone. Record, edit, and post on d.tube. This is the first time I tried posting on d.tube since Hive arrived and I must have missed something. I use my iPhone and the apple app iMovie to edit the videos. I hardly ever use my GoPro probably because my phone is always right there.

I am a Harbor Freight junky. Lol. 12 inch sliding double bevel chop saw and a folding chop saw stand. I think the whole setup minus the blade was around $250. The dang Diablo blade was almost $100. Their tools have worked great for me and the price is right. Now if I was a contractor... I would probably spend a little more $$ and go with Milwaukee, Makita or Dewalt. Harborfreight.com. 😉

$250 for the entire setup, I may become a Harbor freight fan. At first glance, I thought the chop saw was a Dewalt. All Dewalt tools are yellow. Yeah, the blades are crazy, especially when you get into the 80 teeth blades. Lowes carries Dewalt blades and I just purchased a two-pack of blades, one for cutting dimensional lumber and an 80 tooth blade for finish work. I thought the price was really good, $64.00
I won't be shooting any videos on my flip phone. Farm-mom has been after me to get a new phone, but the prices are crazy. We also don't get cell phone service here, and I only use my phone when traveling, 90% of the time it sits on my nightstand.

You can pick up an iPhone from Walmart.com for pretty cheap and you don’t have to guy service for it. Plus they take really good videos. Then just use it on the WiFi at your house. It is much easier in my mind then downloading the videos from a GoPro and then running them through a program to condense them and blah blah blah. I would be willing to trade you my iPhone 6 for some of that maple syrup LOL It has a crack across the screen... you wouldn’t want that. Lol

I am telling you, Your casual DIY person doesn’t need to spend $3-400 on a chop saw. Well maybe if you are doing some fine finish work. They have different grades of tools to choose from. I have had good luck with their tools so far... besides that guard breaking...

Hey, @jlsplatts I just ran into this reply right. I'm still learning how PEAKD works and how it crosses over to @hive.

It was very easy to see comments and replies with steemworld.

I will be getting her old one, which I'm not sure is a good thing, just more shit I have to learn.😢 I have noticed that some replies I make on peakd don't cross over to hive and viseversa. I respond to a comment on a post, only to go back later and see that it is not there. Maybe it's just me, I don't know. Thanks for the offer of your phone, very generous of you. @farm-mom has an iPhone 6 and we were thinking of getting her a new one. She also has a cracked screen, but the phone still works great.

A couple of bottles of syrup should be in the mail in a week or so. With all that is going on, we have not left the premises in a couple of weeks.
When we venture out, it will be our pleasure to send you some.
Stay safe my friend, and make sure you have some pancake mix at the ready!

Steemworld is only for Steem. I do miss having it available along with the notifications and such. That sort of thing will come to Hive over time. I know peakd.com was doing some maintenance and updates over the past couple days so that could be the issue. While I am powering down Steem I am taking 3 year old posts and copying them and reposting them over there. Doing a little Steem milking. Lol. Then once my powerdown is complete I am 100% Hive.

Dude!! You don’t have to send Syrup. Now I gotta think of something to send you.... hmmmm lol.

Cheers!! I pray for good health and happiness for your family for many years to come.

Awesome video @jlsplatts. Love it. Now I just need my husband to watch this and make me some planter boxes.

Thank you. This basic design can be made any size you like. Just remember if you have a box this deep, that dirt gets really heavy. So if you make a rectangle box that has over 6 foot length I would add an extra post in the middle on the long sides of the box. If you are building smaller versions of this box? You can use 2x4's for the posts and cedar fence planks for the sides. Or even some old pallets work good too.

hey nice work, i really want to get my food production up in the coming year for sure.

Steem is a great place for your spam. I don't appreciate it here on my blog. Thank you and please leave the Hive.

There are better ways to get out the message than spamming the blockchain. Please stop this nonsense. You spamming isn't helping spread your message. Instead it is creating a horrible image of who Christ followers are. Just stop with the spam please
