West Side Market, Cleveland, Ohio

This was on one of the very few trips we took to visit Hubby's parents in Akron. They love to take day trips so they took us to the West Side Market in Cleveland. For today's #MarketFriday by @dswigle post, we'll travel back in time to a trip to Ohio.

I quickly want to warn any vegetarians or those adverse to seeing raw meat

I had no idea what I was in for, thinking it was just a big grocery store or a few farm stands.
It was sort of that, but in a way more impressive way. It had the feel of an open market with the shelter of a roof!
Which was good since it was a very cloudy, rainy day.

At the time we went, Dragon Fruit and Rambutan weren't things we saw in our usual grocery stores here on Cape Cod.
IMG_8298.jpg
There truly was a wide array of things from produce to sweets, like these cake pops and classic rock candy! What is the point of rock candy, honestly? Can ANYONE explain it to me?

The meat cases really caught the eye of my very carnivorous husband. Not that I'm not a fan, but he's a SUPER FAN!
A full cooler of just bacon? Yes, please!
IMG_8317.jpg
There were taxidermied animals pretty much everywhere.
IMG_8314.jpg
The selection of breads was GORGEOUS. My in-laws did end up buying a loaf to go with Dad's 'famous' (frozen) meatballs and spaghetti, that night.

Unfortunately, since we were traveling there was really no reason for us to be here, as we couldn't buy anything really. But Hubby did buy us a piece of Baklava to share. It was so good. There is something about the joy of eating a sweetie when you know it's homemade and not full of curious things.

I continued to be amazed by the original structure from 1912.
IMG_8309.JPG
It truly was a great market and I can get why it was so crowded.IMG_8308.jpg
Yep. More meat. But we laughed at how big those steaks were! Like from the Flinstones! Brontosaurus steaks, anyone?
IMG_8306.jpg
There was something else to see around every corner.

We spent a bit of time at the market, but not as much as we could have if we weren't being guided. The parents like to move on quickly. I could see us spending much more time if it was somewhere we could go to regularly.
If you are in Ohio, near Cleveland, I highly recommend a visit. Totally worth being in a crowd.

Sort:

Oh, what a treat! I do so love these markets and it is amazing to have many of them still standing and operating. The entire building is like a museum from the turn of last century (I cannot believe I can say that!) The ceilings are spectacular and everything about it is beautiful.

The food and food and food! Is there no end to it! The BACON is insane! I wish they still had them in every big town, they are an adventure, aren't they? You really made this a fabulous post! Yes! I am so glad you took pictures of the ceiling! They are always one of the best parts of those structures unless they have a set of stairs to another floor! They are usually epic! This was a perfect post and I want to thank you for being a part of #MarketFriday! I cannot tell you how pleased I am to see so many participating every week. I have learned so much about the different cultures of the world, especially the small things that go unnoticed except by those looking for it. Life is interesting, wherever you are, whatever you are doing.

#MarketFriday began as a way to reach out across the globe and learn about different cultures through their markets, especially local markets and farmers markets and eventually branching out and evolving over time from straight shopping to a cultural affair as it highlights how we differ and then again, how much we are alike. We have become a melting pot of culture, but, it is still the Rituals, Festivals, food, architecture, even your language/languages that separate us. I can only hope that learning about each other can help us work together for a peaceful world. Anyone reading this can learn how to be a part!

Fridays are all about the #MarketFriday Challenge! Looking to take part in it? Here is how:

Go to the market, or anywhere that you pay money for a service.
Take pictures! Be creative!
Tell us a little bit about the market or the event. What brought you there? What did you buy? How much did it cost?
Post the picture(s) Of course, you should tell a little bit about the ones you post

Please only one post each week. Believe it not, I run out of voting power if you put in many more than that.
You must put #MarketFriday by @dswigle somewhere on your post. If you don't and someone reads it, there is nothing to tie #MarketFriday to that post. As always, please remember! #MarketFriday loves you!

Rambutans!!
One of my favourites and you don't get plenty here in my country.

The candy - yes, I cannot understand why anyone would dare eat those - I'd be worried for my teeth hehe

I remember visiting an old-timey village as a kid, where these were like 'the candy of the past' and we ALWAYS wanted it! I image, as a kid, it was just about the sugar high. haha

Baklava is sound interesting and I wanna try the original taste, still not yet :)

The rambutan looks not fresh. In here, my living city has red rambutan :)

that’s satisfying for me to see market in different area, with different food and culture:)

Thanks foe sharing :)

Interesting! I thought the redder they are, the less ripe. Thinking these were ready to eat. I love learning about things like that!

Cool structure and it's nice to see how's the market inside. It's like having a sneak on the life there. I quickly stopped in Cleveland once, while traveling by greyhound from Chicago to Philadelphia (24 hours of pure adventure on the road lol). I just had the time to give it a look though...

Haha! Actually, before I met my husband, my first experience with Cleveland, I think, was a train stop on my way home (at the time) from Cape Cod back to Michigan. I can't imagine being on a bus for 24 hours. The train is much more glamorous! ;)

Yeah it shurely is! I love looking at Micheal Portillo's Continental Railway Journey. That time I wanted to do this travel to taste the greyhound experience and to see "what's in the middle". Once in Chigaco I told this to a friend of mine who lived there and he said: "well, there's nothing in the middle!". LOL

When I travel I look food tourism. This place looks awesome! Bread and desserts alone would have me visiting. That chocolate mousse cake would be my #1 purchase.

I really wish we could've explored more, longer. But my mother-in-law was terrified she'd lose us and I think wanted to get out quickly :/

Wow, what a great market. They have everything! The fruits and veggies are gorgeous. And so are the cake pops.

Yes. I really would love to have a marker like that near me! It's so much better when you know where your food is coming from.
