Unfortunately, memories are still more pleasant than reality. This year, which I entered with high hopes, shows no signs, for me, of being any better than previous years. Something is happening, after this seemingly endless pandemic, and, at least for me, nothing good looks like it will continue.
In such moments, in order to forget the present, I turn to the past, to the most pleasant memories. For me, the best memories are holiday memories and the best holidays have always been seaside holidays.
The best beach holiday experience I had was in Greece, on the island of Thassos. For me, the ultimate beauty at sea is in Greece and because I have only been to Thassos island, that's all I can relate to.
I have been to Limenaria, the second largest town on Thassos, there they call it a village but in my opinion, it is a small town. My first holiday there was in 2017 and I liked it so much that I decided to go there every year, as long as I can travel. Beyond the beauty of the place, the atmosphere that I liked, the fact that I found what I now expect from the sea were also our hosts with whom we became very close friends.
We managed to go back there in 2018 and 2019 and that was it. The pandemic stopped us from going to Thassos again.
The memories, aided by the hundreds of photos we have taken over the three years, make us forget the not-so-good present and fuel our hope that next summer we will finally get to Greece.
Now I don't want to highlight the natural beauties of the island. For that, other travel posts will follow.
Right now I'm going to talk about food!
Every time I visit a new place, a new region, or a new country, especially a new country, I am most curious and eager to know the local food.
Being Greece, all the more so. Before arriving on the island I tried to find out how and where the best food was and everyone I asked said... taverna! So I started looking for tavernas. They were many and hard to choose.
When we got to our hosts I thought I'd ask and ask for a recommendation. A place where they used to eat when they decided not to eat at home. They recommended that I go in the evening to a street near the hotel and that there I would find what I was looking for. They didn't tell me more, they just said it was a surprise.
I didn't have the patience to wait for the evening, so I immediately went to that street.
All the taverns and terraces were located on the waterfront and on the busiest streets.
When we arrived at the place recommended by our hosts we found a side street far from the sea. I figured I would find a famous and hidden restaurant. It was not so.
Instead of the restaurant, we found only some tables and chairs placed on either side of the street. Nothing else.
I left somewhat disappointed but also curious because I trusted our hosts. We returned in the evening... The "scenery" changed a little, I noticed that the tables were ready.
This was the start of a very enjoyable evening! In a very short time, all the tables were occupied.
That's when I found out what was going on there. A family had designed such a tavern, i.e. their kitchen and the street. The simplest and most ordinary food, as they usually eat, cooked by the women of the family. I mean mother, daughters, daughters-in-law.
This is what the menu looks like.
Simple dishes, salads, fish and seafood, meat. Tasty, fresh, and cheap food. Cheap because they've eliminated a lot of the costs that restaurants have.
Toasted bread on the grill on which they put extra virgin olive oil, made from olives from their orchard. Grilled fish, fried with olive oil and lemon and wine!
Mediterranean food. A joy for all customers. We met them every evening. Anyone who has eaten here never wants to go anywhere else. Become a permanent customer.
I was delighted with the place I found to eat. Looking forward to the evening. Not only me...
Food was plentiful for everyone. More than the food was the totally special atmosphere that I haven't found anywhere else. We all felt a bit Greek, that's why we went there. We also learned, cooked some dishes at home, and applied the same methods: grilling, extra virgin olive oil, lemon juice, and wine!
In the end, I have to put a flower. Also from the island.
Thanks to the one who opened the way to Thassos for me, my son Alex who is 40 years old today!Happy birthday! He gave me the gift of the 2017 holiday.
Happy birthday to your son for yesterday, my eldest was also 40 on the 4th (yesterday), younger will be 38 on the 9th, so fortunate having wonderful boys who bring us so much joy!
Going off the seafront into local is always far more interesting able to be with residents and learn more from them over a delicious looking meal. Now that is a holiday to sit and dream about happening again soon!

I'm glad your boys bring you happiness, that's the greatest satisfaction for parents. I've been lucky to have a good child myself.
Forgive the late reply and thank you!
The guys have always been my best friends as they grew into adulthood, we discuss and debate most things in life together.
Enjoy having your son around many lose touch with their parents which is a huge loss to both.
Thank you! I feel the same way. Children (good ones) are the biggest gift in life.
My sanity check every so often, they really bring joy most days, oh we have other days as well 😄
We all have, of course!
👍 Have a great day!
@bluemoon this was a lovely post. I loved that you enjoy venturing off the well-trodden tourist paths to immerse yourself in the local community. My husband and I do this too. We enjoy being able to get a feel of community rather than just a mixed milieu of foreign tourists like ourselves. After all, if I want a cultural melting pot, I just need to step outside my front door😂. Where I live, my neighbours come from all corners of the globe: England, Malaysia, South Africa, Israel, Germany, Russia, Poland, and for the most part we all get on really well. We are a friendly bunch who look out for each other. I do, however, love visiting some of the cultural hubs in the world where a single culture and tradition is on display and one is given the opportunity through community, food, and local custom to gain some deeper insights into what it means to come from there and how looks and feels to be in their shoes. The pics of the outdoor restaurant really reminded me of a trip we took to Venice, where restaurants popped up out of nowhere by dusk, and what was once a residential street turned into a hive of nocturnal activity, alive with coloured lights, tables decked in checkered patterns, music wafting through the alleyways. And just the best pizza that I have ever tasted in my life❣️I imagine that these evenings will live long in your memory and I hope you get to revisit your home away from home and the special friends that you made there, very soon. !ALIVE !PIZZA !LUV

Very beautiful scenery and also the typical sea food menu is also delicious, of course. Like your post, thank you.
Never too late to comment on such a lovely post :)
Oh, made me miss summer so much! These small taverns offer real home food, I love them, true gems for locals and visitors!
Best wishes to your son! I am following him in a couple of months :)
And I hope that you will be able to travel to Thassos very soon! I can almost see you in one of these tables with your sweet wife drinking wine and eating what the women of the tavern have prepared with so much care :)
Thank you very much! You are much closer to summer than I am, I hope you can find time off for vacation. Yes, I remember you said you were close to the same age as our son. You are so young, you should enjoy it!
I've fallen behind on comments, I've read your posts but haven't managed to say anything about them yet. Tomorrow I hope to surprise you.
Our main goal this year is to get to Thassos again. It won't be easy, some obstacles have appeared now. I hope to overcome them.
I so enjoy your comments, as well as your posts, thanks again!
I've fallen behind on comments AND posts as well, as you noticed :)
I truly hope you will overcome all obstacles! I wish for them to disappear and leave all roads (and seas) open to Thassos!
The same goes for me, I can't respond to many comments. That didn't happen a few years ago. As you rightly say, it's never too late to make a (sincere) comment and make someone happy. It works for you! I'm glad you post with good regularity, that's good, you make friends with your comments, that's the way to success here. I hope Hive has a long life too and then, not too long from now, I think you will be happy with your achievements. So will @fotostef. I remember that last year he only posted once a month, because he gives all his time to the farm. I hope that now when there will be busy days in the garden, you will have time for at least one post a week!
Thanks so much for the wishes, I'll do my best to help the seas open up!
Such an amazing post! When my daughter and I were in Athens a few years ago we ate at a restaurant that looks just like the one in your first picture and it was the best meal I've had in all of my travels! Greece was simply amazing!
Thassos looks really cool. I can't wait to get back to Greece and explore the many other areas this country has to offers.
Thanks for sharing this awesome post with us. I can't wait to get back out of the road again to travel and sample the local food.
Cheers!
You share the same passion for Greece as I do, I'm glad. I hope this year we will have the joy of being in this incredible country again. Thanks for your comment!
I remember how you wrote about this restaurant. It's great when there are places where you want to return! those cats are definitely regulars at that restaurant 😅
I'm glad you remembered, thank you. Cats are everywhere in Greece, but they are not very friendly.
These photos remind me of my time traveling to Amorgos island WAY back in 2013. Greece is a stunning country man, and the women too. They are definately up there with the Latinas.
I miss Greece dearly. Thank you for sharing these photos, as they sure brought back some memories.
Yes, Greece is a place you can't forget. I'm glad that my photos brought back good memories.
Congratulations, your post has been added to Pinmapple! 🎉🥳🍍

You are more than welcome and I couldn't resist but I already read your post but I will come back tomorrow and leave a comment. I just wanted to make sure that I got the vote before I finished my post. I think you and I both stay up Way Beyond what is acceptable to post. LOL I'm almost done! I won't be back until tomorrow goodnight Dan! @bluemoon
haha I loved this
The story of my life ...😂
It's true! I swear it. Off to bed! Good night!
Good night🤗, it's 10h34 here in the UK, just about to read your Market Friday post :-)
In the end, I only got four hours of sleep but I had a bunch of running around to do early this morning.
Thank you! I'm glad I was able to write before you, ha, ha... The truth is that I've been preparing yesterday the post and photos for tomorrow's post... all Thassos. I need the best memories now.
I find it impossible to remember the time difference between us, can you help me? Mine is now Friday, 10 am.
It's 3 AM here. I'm still running behind. I'm knee-deep in settling my brother's estate but he left it messy and and there are many that are included so it's been a nightmare to put it to bed. As far as I'm concerned I would bow out and not take any money except that I have to take care of the estate so I have to be there anyway. Someday I hope to be able to do a post ahead of time. If I didn't enjoyed so much I would just throw the towel in and get some extra sleep. Actually all is well I'm just whining a little bit. LOL
Big hugs to both you and @bluemoon. I hope that the experience is over soon for both of you ❣️
Thank you very much!
Finally, you're complaining a little! That makes me feel better and not ashamed that I do it from time to time. The truth is, I've noticed that I feel better after doing this. I hope it helps you too!
I've had a bit of a rocky succession myself, after Magda's brother. For me it wasn't about getting anything, on the contrary, I'm threatened to be left with some pretty heavy problems. We have a lawyer who is now trying to resolve the situation. Unpleasant!
Denise, some rest is needed. Last week I couldn't write for about five days, it was bad but it was also good. A little break can do good for our body and mind but can cause in Hive activity, but Hive is not everything, as you rightly say.
I wish you solve your problems as soon as possible and I won't write now, maybe you choose to get some sleep!
Do you know what is worse? It's not even a good post because I'm tired and trying to write but I need to get it going before I go to bed.
I suffer the same in most cases. By the middle of writing this post, it's either very late or I have other problems and I'm no longer at all happy with what results. I start off with enthusiasm but then I lose my straight line.
I'm sure, from your experience, no one will notice that it's a less good post!
Ha! I hope so. You know what, Dan? The money doesn't matter. I agree. I probably will just roll over into a trust for the kids anyway. It's the entire process on the heartache and knowing he went before his time. It's having to deal with his life which was complicated and putting it all to rest. I say this because people think that when you are inheriting something that it's the be-all to get all, but in fact that usually is never about the money. May we all these things to rest this year.

Sounds incredible. I love restaurants like that and have come across one or two in other parts of Europe where we ended up going every night. Hope you get to return soon.
