RE: Market Friday: Chincoteague Pony Auction: Don't Forget to Pay the Lady!

in Market Friday3 years ago

I wanted to ask if they would take crypto.

That's what I was thinking. Maybe next year. How would you like to buy a herd? What about turning HP into horses?

This kind of selling is completely foreign to me, it's probably like art auctions. I'm not a fan because I would neither buy horses nor have enough money to buy art I like. The horse is a splendid animal but one that has always inspired fear in me when I have been near it.
You are happy there, it shows in the gorgeous photos and the way you talk about them. I still haven't figured out if you have horses at home or have bought and paid for them to be cared for elsewhere. Either way, I understand you're having a great time now, so a vacation!

I've been away for a few days too, I'm finding it hard to get writing and have missed a few deadlines just as I'll be ignoring some rules to write for Friday's market.

Once again eclectic, mixed, and wonderful! Thanks, @dswigle!

Hi, Dan!!! I have been away all week at the Pony Swim, camping with my family and extended family. It has been a lot of fun, but, really HOT this year.

I understand what you are saying about buying and going to the auction. Chincoteague is a small island close to where my shore house is. Originally, we would go there and kayak, watching the ponies wander the wetlands there. Eventually, I heard about the pony swim and went one year. The purpose of the pony swim is to move the ponies from Assateague Island to Chincoteague Island so that the foals can be auctioned. The auction serves two purposes. First, the auction helps to control the overall size of the herd, keeping it from growing too large. Secondly, the auction is a fundraiser for the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company. The island is small and the sustainability depends on keeping a balance of horses to food. We didn't buy one right away. It takes a lot of dedication to have a horse and keep them the way they deserve. Nobody should buy one just to have. They are not objects, and should never be treated as one.

Your fear is based on your comfort level. If you raised this horse since it was little, there would be no fear and you would be familiar with horses in general. Because you think you know what they are capable of, it gives you fear, but, knowing how gentle they can really be would make you no fear. BTW Animals can smell fear. Horses sense the anxiety of their riders and experience an increased heart rate at the same time as their human companions. This may be why it is said that horses can sense fear when a new human is attempting to handle them. I see it all the time.

We have three horses which we kept at the house until I moved here. We rent stalls at a barn not far from where I live. We do all the care for them and ride them most days. They have a nice pasture to graze during the day and they are groomed on a daily basis. It is their favorite time, I think. :) We sometimes take them on a trail ride, sometimes long, sometimes short. They are trained in English style riding.

I don't need to be looking to buy to enjoy going there. It is a fun tradition and I love how the entire town takes part in it. They volunteer all of their services, and this is what makes this town so fun to go to. It i the giving of ones self that shines here.

I love art also, but, I probably went to art auctions for ten years or more before I bought a piece. I have been around horses my entire life, but, didn't own one myself for a long, long time. I actually never really needed to own one to still enjoy them, but, one day, it happened.

Thanks so much for stopping by! You are always a joy to read!

#MarketFriday love you!

Oh thanks @dswigle, your explanations are crystal clear! Now I understand well what is the situation of your horses, I understand well how big this passion is, it has an aristocratic side... horses not being within everyone's reach.

I understand why this event is happening on the island, an event that has turned into a show that everyone is chewing on.

I suspected it was close to your seaside home. It makes sense that it would be.

I dislike the expression "comfort level ( or zone)". It's been a habit, especially with a lot of influencers, gurus, and all sorts of modern quacks using the phrase: "you have to get out of your comfort zone". I detest this expression, especially as it has become commonplace, I hear it everywhere, from the market to the theatre... I don't deny that maybe the meaning is correct, but I don't like the expression...

I know where the fear of horses comes from, but I didn't want to expand on the subject. The fear comes from my childhood in the country. My grandmother didn't have horses or cows, she didn't have big animals, so I wasn't used to them. My playmates had such animals that were treated very badly, brutally and because of this, they were also brutal and, probably out of fear, would bite or kick when you approached them. I have seen a few accidents of this kind that ended badly for people and hence the fear.
You are talking about well-groomed, gentle, and trained horses. That's a whole other story, I'm not afraid of them.

Glad you had such a nice week, I hoped so when I understood from your absence here that you were on vacation. I really like the way you say "my family and extended family", I feel your love and warmth for your family. I think that means happiness!

I'm so glad I could communicate with you again. Have a nice week!
