The Festival Called Spring by Market Friday

in Market Friday2 years ago

The Festival of Spring! There isn't much that makes me miss going to Burnside Farm at this time of year. It is all about the tulips, It is a family thing, with three generations of a family living and working the farm since acquiring it in 1995. They plant over two million tulip bulbs every year, all by hand, a labor-intensive chore. It's a labor of love, evident in how they run the business and how they treat the customers that seek their advice on all things flowers.

IMG_4616a.JPG

The sunlight is so brilliant as it shines across the fields, many times you can catch the light, translucent as it stands tall in the sunshine. Oh, beauty! Tulips need at least six hours a day in direct sunshine to do well. Are you able to grow tulips where you live? This was the first day they were open! The tulips are spotty, but they get better every day it is open.

IMG_4346a.JPG

They just finished rebuilding this open building. It is the entrance, ticket counter, and check-outs. It is also where you pick up a basket to put your flowers. A nice touch when you are picking your own flowers. If you need snippets to cut your flowers, they will give you some to use. First come, first serve. Even though I am there at the opening, I bring my own. Then there is no jockeying for position to get a loaner pair.

IMG_4498.JPG

Today is #MarketFriday initiated by @dswigle (Denise, that's me!!) Join me as we share our markets across the globe. I always look forward to seeing what you send me! It is amazing to see the different markets and cultures of our friends here on Hive.

IMG_4464.JPG

The family has been in business for years before moving to the area and started in the business by growing specialty flowers for wholesalers during the year, over one hundred different varieties of dahlias, tulips, and daffodils. and sunflowers. The business moved from the McLean area to Haymarket, giving them more space and a more rural setting. There were several greenhouses added to the property to accommodate their growing business. They are organic growers and use sustainable farming practices, something that pleases me.

IMG_4182.JPG

I bought a ticket in February to ensure I would be able to get one. They only allow so many in at one time and when they are sold out, there will be no more. You cannot buy a ticket at the door any longer, it is only online and you must purchase it ahead of time as they schedule the tickets. If that is too much trouble, blame Covid. They changed how they do things since then. It is easier to do it that way and not have to handle money. They don't even take cash if you buy something there. It is the way of the world, for sure.

IMG_4568a.JPG

Tell the truth, aren't they just beautiful? Who can resist their beauty? It is #alwaysaflower for me! I was really in love with the red and purple mix that they had. They must have wintered well, so they had two colors come up in that row. The red that was planted in the fall and the leftover purple that came back up. Normally the tulip bulbs don't do too well with the clay soil they have in the area of the farm. I always leave mine in and they seem to always come up. I have added things to my soil to break up the clay., something with gypsum.

IMG_4081a.JPG

Even the weeds are gorgeous and prolific! Can you ask for anything more? I went the first two days they were open. On the first day, you could see that there were empty spaces. On the second day, there was twice as much color! The Temperature was 88F (31C) and it was perspiring flowers. After cool nights, it was welcoming the sunshine. I had an entire cherry tree go from buds to full bloom overnight. What?!! It's True!

IMG_4689a.JPG

Pictured above, the farm wagon, being pulled by a tractor...it is full of people. It goes all around the farm, showing off the huge playground and a barn and yard with chickens, ducks, goats, a couple of cows and, I think that is it. There may be a spare animal in there that I didn't see.

IMG_4531.JPG

Tulips are a gift! The tulip will come back, year after year, just like a spring vacation. Not only do they come back, but, they grow, becoming bigger and better, in a process called naturalizing. Much like flowers put out seeds, tulips put out bulblets, and they are attached to the main bulb until they get big enough to support a flower of their own. Yes! And that is sort of how a baby is born!

IMG_4071.JPG

I have to say that although I bought a ticket, I purchases a passport which gives me admission to the Festival of Flowers for the season. This is actually only about three weeks, depending on the weather. The price for the passport is $75.00 which is a lot of money, but, I could go every day and whenever they are open, you are free to go... also: you get five free stems each time you go. As an added bonus, they also have sunflowers for a month in the summer and if you have a passport, it is free, also with three stems every day. Deal!

IMG_4410.JPG

If you are buying a regular ticket, it is good for a single-use. You still get your five free stems. All tickets are final. No refunds. Ages 5 and under are free and do not need a ticket. Tickets are released a few days at a time for the entire season.

Tips for your trip to Burnside:

1.Dress in layers. Spring can be chilly in the morning and warm in the afternoon.
2.Wear farm-worthy footwear. The fields take longer to dry out after spring rain.
3.Prepare for walking. The fields cover many acres.
4.Bring water and stay hydrated.
5.Pack a picnic, they can provide a basket if you didn't bring one. There are picnic tables for your convenience, there are food trucks, different ones every day. See their FB page and site to see the field conditions and menus for the day. All information about the tips was taken off their site.

We’re sorry, no dogs in the spring. Tulips are considered toxic to both dogs. (dogs are permitted for summer).

IMG_4160a.JPG

I look at these fields and I wonder how long it takes them to hand-plant new bulbs every year. They may or may not survive the winter in this clay soil. If you are in business, you cannot depend on fate to choose what you are doing. I have to say that we have had mild winters for quite a while now, but, it could happen that we get a cold snap or ice and snow. It is just not dependable. So they do the needful, every year. They hand plant over 2 million bulbs. I'll never whine about my two hundred or so.

IMG_4526a.JPG

I don't always replant the bulbs, I will be honest with you. I am a fifty-fifty kind of gal. I dig some up and forget where I put the others. I have to say that in some ways, Burnside might be more like me than I thought. The rows with all purple and a few red sprinkled in? Forgotten beauty or merely having an artistic moment? I am not sure, but, my vote is that it got left behind when they were pulling the bulbs. But, I think it adds a flair for the unusual pattern or color. I like it!

IMG_4404.JPG

It is normal to go through, each row is a specific color and beautiful to come upon. However, when you are coming upon a row that has a lot of colors? This is part of the plan also. *When people are picking flowers sometimes a bulb comes with it. of course, you can keep it, or you can let them cut it off when you go to pay. They have a box (the amnesty box) where you can toss them back. Otherwise, you are charged $1.00 for each bulb, and you can take them home - they are now yours. They plant them in rows and the colors are eclectic, it's true! But all the same, just beautiful!

IMG_4474a.JPG

How do you like to plant your color? One color for a bold effect? Or do you like to be fun and flirty, mixing it all up? Would it be bad if you liked it both ways and had a mix of the unusual throughout your yard? Or do you like law and order?

Please leave the link to your post here so it can easily be found by others. It helps you and me to have them in one place. Where else can you take such a quick trip around the globe? Thank you so much for joining us!! ❤

IMG_4679.JPG

And just like that, this post is done. I hope you enjoyed coming to the tulip farm with me. It is such a beautiful time of year, with everything blooming. As always, I want to thank you for taking the time to visit, and just remember, #MarketFriday loves you!! As always, there must be flowers to color my world. #alwaysaflower.

IMG_4178a.JPG

Burnside Farms is pretty convenient for me to go, a short hike across the highways, bringing me a tad rural. I willing seek out the beauty and have brought some bulbs home this year. Do you like fresh cut flowers, or do you prefer to see yours in the ground, adorning your yard?

Fridays are all about the #MarketFriday Challenge! Looking to take part in it? Here is how:

Do you want to join #MarketFriday? Here are some helpful guidelines!

1.Go to any type of market, or anywhere where you pay money for a service. It can be a museum, a movie theatre, or an auction. Be creative!
2.Tell us a little bit about the market or the event. What brought you there? What did you buy? How much did it cost? We like to compare prices, otherwise, it is just pictures of a market
3.Post the pictures! No out-of-focus ones, please! Tell a little bit about the pictures that you post. Having many pictures to scroll through does not make a better post without an explanation
4.Use the MarketFriday Community Platform to post #hive-196308 (this is not required, but appreciated) If you don't, then #MarketFriday should be your first tag
5.Following me and reblogging the post so more see it would be appreciated !! Not a rule, just appreciated, more vision for more views on your posts
6.You must put #MarketFriday by @dswigle somewhere on your post
7.#MarketFriday post should be submitted sometime on Friday UTC
8.The post MUST be in English
9.Drop the link into the MarketFriday comment section so I can find it

As always, please remember! #MarketFriday loves you!

Pick one variety? Can I choose them ALL??? How magnificent. What a riot of colour....no....a FEAST of colour. Spring is certainly a time to celebrate. And how much better than those glorious fields of tulips. Love it. Thank you for sharing Denise

I know, right? There is no way I can either! It is a feast for my eyes for me! Spring is a celebration of the senses. It doesn't look bad either. I got so lucky finding this place, it is a massive tulip farm, it makes me not miss the Keukenhof quite so much. :)

Thank you, my lovely friend. I hope you have a most wonderful week ahead!

I love tulips a sure sign that nature is once again waking up. Here is my market friday effort for this week cheers

Yeeeee haaaaw !

This is truly colorful and beautiful!

Yes, one might wonder...is it "Forgotten beauty or merely having an artistic moment?" as you say... Nonetheless, it's beautiful!

I do agree with you about paying the extra money for the passport. Based on what you describe, I also think it's definitely worth it!

Thank you for sharing the Festival of Spring with us! I think we all need some color in our lives... Well, I know I do...😉!

You find my post for this week here.

Thank you! I love tulips for their color! Zinnias for the same reason. Same exact: colors displayed in wild abandon!

Hehe... True, isn't it> Nonetheless!

I wouldn't dream of doing it the other way, in fact, I never have, but, fill my house with free tulips for the month! I stop by every day and get some! :)

Thank you for stopping by and reading the post and dropping your words and link! I love flowers! They always color my world! #alwaysaflower

Happy Easter!!

That's awesome! I think that's a great example of "don't work harder, work smarter". And that's exactly what you are doing here...working smart!

It might be a bit late for me to say this...but I'm going to say it anyhow...lol... Happy Easter to you too!

Never too late for niceties!! And, Im Catholic!! It's Easter Monday! :))

😍

That´s an amazing place, a true heaven for all flower lovers and particularly tulip lovers :) You took some very nice shots on this tour. Happy Spring, Happy Easter and Happy Market Friday!!!

@tipu curate

Thank you for the Tipu! I truly appreciate that! Happy Spring and I hope your Easter was joyous! It is truly a wonderful place to inspire your soul. The colors are wild and a tad extravagant, but, who doesn't love to color their world?

#MarketFriday loves you!

I just noticed that TipU vote didn´ t actually go through, sorry about that! :/ I love wild and extravagant colors, it reminds me of the tropics where these colors are abundant so I definitely enjoyed your post ;) I hope your Easter was amazing too!

@phortun I never even noticed! It does that from time to time when it is down and then, it doesn't backtrack. That happens. I don't always go back and check, but, I probably should.

It's true! It is like the colorful tropics. Easter was lovely! Everything about it! Have a wonderful week ahead!

What beautiful photos! It's true that spring is beautiful and the colours it brings fill us with new life. Thank you for making reading at HIVE more enjoyable.

Hi @dswigle

Beautiful place with so many flowers. I love flowers but at the same time I am allergic to flower pollen. But I'm sure even with allergy I would enjoy a place like the one you share.

On the other hand, I share my contribution on #marketfriday.

A restaurant with a store where you can buy typical products of the region to be able to make the same dishes at home as in the restaurant.

Regards

IMG_0846.JPG

I know exactly what you mean about the flowers! I love them, but for some reason, this year I wake up congested after spending hours in the field of flowers! I don't think I am allergic, but, maybe sensitive to the pollen - perhaps!

I read through your amazing post this morning and will comment tomorrow, today was not my own. The food was so very tempting, even from afar! Thank you for stopping by and leaving your words.

Thank you for your comment

Glad to be part of the #marketfriday

Aloha, @dswigle !
Tulips are absolutely beautiful!!!
I saw some here in Kono in the grocery store:

And they are expensive!!! It stands out.
https://ecency.com/hive-124452/@silversaver888/market-friday-in-hawaii

They are stunning! The prices of tulips have gone up here! Unbelievable! The colors are stunning and together they are so dramatic. Lovely shot! Thank you so much for stopping by while on vacation! ❤️

I hope you are having a wonderful time!

Seems like everything is pretty expensive in the US, no matter where you live! Don't you think?

Thanks again for dropping your link!

#MarketFriday loves you!

I can imagine how beautiful it is out there, @dswigle ! Rows and rows of tulips, different color, and varieties. To take that all in... it must be invigorating!!!

Tulips are so expensive in Hawaii. They cost upwards of $25 a pot. It is a lot cheaper in California.
I am buying food that you don't find in the mainland, I will feature it next #marketfriday.

I attended Good Friday services in the local Church here. It was packed with people. I didn't realize just how many Catholics live here, and visitors as well.

I love #marketfriday!

MarketFriday loves you!

Ahhhhhhhh... so beautiful !

I like signing up for things online and not waiting in person and.... .all that.

So beautiful. Why am I not surprised you have another passport?

It's so hard to decide which way is best. All one color is divine and yet, a random bloom of another color here and there really pops out and grabs your attention. There is simply not a bad way, do you think?

Thanks for sharing.

It has made their life so much easier than waiting until they get there and then signing them up/ The big change came with Covid! Ha! What didn't? Everything changed with it and they are not going to change again. (change back, heck no! They have us trained already!)

It is your fault!! The flower farm they have down there is how I got addicted!!! Now I have the Lavender Passport and the Tuli one. Oh, yes! The sunflowers!

I have to agree! I love it both ways myself! I can never decide which I love better either. The riot of color with something unusual in it... Let's just do that!

Thank you!

#MarketFriday loves you!

I know it's my fault and this is one time being my fault is not something I'm ashamed of. LOL !!

I like it when there is a different color here and there, almost as if it were an accident and some renegade bulb fell in with the others. An accident on purpose !

LOL Well, it isn't your fault, but it can be if you want!

Happy Easter, my friend!

IMG_4568a.JPG

The pops of color: Every year, they take up all of the bulbs and put in sunflowers. Then next year, they plant new bulbs and sometimes a rogue color comes up.. because it didn't get pulled. :)

So there you have the rest of the story!

Enjoy the rest of your day.! ❤️

Oh my! Those tulips are utterly amazing 😍 When I lived in Holland for a little while, I love going for walks and taking tons of pictures of them, but I’ve never been to a proper tulip farm like this one ☝️ What a place to visit!

This week I’m a good girls and attaching the link to my #marketfriday article

Happy Friday 💙

Thank you! They are the favorites of everyone in this house! There is so much beauty in a lovely stroll through them!

Thank you for stopping by and leaving your words!

#MarketFriday loves you!

That’s for sure! I saw a few poking through in my garden last week. Hopefully I’ll find time to capture and write about them this weekend 💙

I'll be waiting! :)

Still didn’t happen, but I did take some pictures 😁💙

I haven't seen anybody growing tulips here. I'm not sure if it will be too hot or with the rain happening so often recently, it may not make it.
This week, more food for me:

What a nice guy to take care of something that could be a potential problem!

That is a win-win!

Thanks @vickoly !!

Most flower store here only sells artificial flowers, but we've got local gardeners who grows varieties of flower on the mini garden beside the road and then sell to whoever needed any, most of their flowers are planted in bags or vase for easy transportation.

That is awesome! What a great idea and practical too!!!

Hello @amitsharma !! Aren't those red tulips amazing? They hang their head in the breeze, gently letting it bob up and down. Thanks so much for stopping by and leaving your words.

I fell in love with Tulips when I first saw them on the internet. Sadly, I won't get a chance to walk through such a beautiful place with hundreds of tulips. Thank you so much for sharing. It changed my mood! :)

Hope it passes and hope you have a bit of time to answer some questions in the middle (if you don't fall asleep first :D )

https://www.ecency.com/hive-196308/@terganftp/what-s-for-breakfast

Hello!Hello! I am running so far behind with the weekend of Easter here. It keeps me running Friday, Saturday and Sunday, but, I am working as fast as I can. I am sure it is fine and I am sure I will be able to answer all the questions I can. :)

Thank you and I promise not to fall asleep! Did you fall asleep on mine? :)

Thank you for stopping by and leaving your link!

#MarketFriday loves you!

All good :) I did read your post and didn't fall asleep. I do have one more question for you and since I haven't found a way to send a direct message I'll add it here :) I want to make a post about the cost of basic staple foods (flour, sugar, oil, salt, beans and meat). I'd love to get information about the cost of those items from other #MarketFriday users. If I send you some HIVE as a prize would you be willing to make a contest out of it? Or should I go about this another way? Side note: If you did say yes, how much Hive would make it worthwhile?

You can alway DM me on discord @dswigle#3637

The rest I'll get back to you a little later.

@terganftp I am not sure if you read other #Marketriay posts, but, if you do, you can see, most give the price of their items. I understand you want it in a different way, and sometimes I will give a topic for the week. What can you buy for $10.00? I actually do not run contests (at this point) on #MarketFriday. The reason is simple. I want to learn about different cultures, not compare. Contests incite comparing and are not at all what I am after. I do give prizes, every single week. More than two or three. I don't announce it and I don't call it a prize. I get some amazing posts and they are deserving of more than what I can give them in my vote. I vote each 100% but with all the posts I get, it gets a little worn out. But, I do not get complaints, so I guess it is okay.

If you have any more questions or concerns, you can ask here or discord! Have a great rest of your week!

Thanks for the clarification. One thing I really want to do is make a post entitled "Setting the bar on food costs"....basically looking at the cost of staple ingredients to decide if something is worth cooking at home or buying prepared. I would just love getting prices of basic staples from around the world and #MarketFriday seems like just the community to do it. To me staples would be :

  • Carb/Starch (ie. Flour, Rice, Potato)
  • Oil (ie. canola oil, olive oil, margerine)
  • Milk and Eggs (or equivalent based on area)
  • Dried Beans (type determined by area)
  • Meat (Beef, Chicken, Pork, Fish)

If you ever want to make that the topic of the week I'd be happy to chip in some HBD.

And totally understand if that is not what #MarketFriday is all about

I agree it is a brilliant idea, one that I have not even touched as a group hug as many don't get around like we do and must use a tuktuk, jeepney, or walk. There may or may not be money available. I just try to make it easier by not pressuring for particular things.

To be honest, some don't even read my post so when I do put something in there for the next week, they don't even know.

Many people in Asia don't cook at home. It has been proven time and again that it is cheaper to eat out than at home. I didn't believe it until it was proven.

I am not complaining about the HBD. It is fun for me to give it because it is not competed for.

You are actually wrong about it not being what #MarketFriday is about. It is so multifaceted, it has turned into a cultural affair. Food costs? #MarketFriday for sure. Eating at home/out? So very #MarketFriday! I can make almost anything into a #MrketFriday post.

I can post it, however, no contest would be involved.

Thanks for the reply. As you mentioned many of the users here have limited means. One of the posts that drew me to #MarketFriday was a mom budgeting her P2000 ($20USD) for weekly groceries. One thing I'd love to do...if you can think of a good way to do it.... is give two random members $10HBD and a challenge to bring home the best deals. A fun shopping challenge if you will.

Again, if its not a #marketfriday thing I'll try to bring it to #frugal not stingy....

But I'm so green at getting into blogger mindset I despair that I will never be a blogger.

Thanks for listening though.

I still need to make a point to get over to the festival in Holland, MI. I think we might still be a bit early here for them yet. I notice the greens are coming up on the daffodils in back, but no flowers yet. I also noticed I have some scapes coming up in the garden where I planted my garlic last fall.

You do! They have an awesome festival there! They always about a month behind as it is much cooler there. It is organized differently than a lot of tulip festivals and I have to admit, I love it the best of any of them!

The Tulip Time Festival does not occur in a gated, single location. Over 8 days in May, events, and activities take place in different locations, most within a 4-mile radius of Downtown Holland. Tulips can be seen for no charge in public parks and along downtown streets.

So, woohoo!!! It doesn't start until May 6 and runs until the 13th!

I am so jealous! The daffodils come before tulips, so very soon!!!! I bet this week will make them pop!

Thanks for supporting the challenge!

Thanks for the info!

I always look forward to seeing what you send me! It is amazing to see the different markets and cultures of our friends here on Hive.

Today we (my brother and me) ate a pizza in a pizzeria in Szolnok, Hungary. This is my/our entry for the #MarketFriday today: A mildly (not too) spicy ("Lucifer") pizza on Good Friday - Our #MarketFriday (2023.04.07).

By the way, there are various flowers in the city and in the village too. But there are also certain parts in our country (in Hungary), where currently it is snowing.

Happy Easter.

Have a nice day and have a nice weekend.
All the best. Greetings and much love from Hungary.

Happy Easter @xplosive !!

I love pizza! It is one of my favorite food groups! LOL Thank you for dropping your link here.

Our country is like that also. in the Northern part and also the mountainous places, there is snow for a while, so no tulips!

I have had a wonderful Easter and Easter weekend, one of the reasons I am commenting so late!!!

What a beautiful field of tulips, but it is certainly amazing that a family has the tradition of growing these tulips, and that this tradition is passed down from generation to generation.

Isn't that wonderful! Traditions are such a cool thing to carry on!

Thanks for stopping by and leaving your words!

Everyone likes flowers ,quite a large area of flower farming , one of which is tulips. The flowers they like are the beautiful colors, shapes and smells good when the flowers emit a fragrance. Post of the week. Thank you very much.

It's been a long time Denise! Come to think of it, I have never been in such a place, in a huge field, full of flowers. Thanks to you and your photos, I can almost put my feet up there.

Today I'd like to publish a post about the market but I only have half a dollar and I'm like Martina the cockroach.... What will I buy... What will I buy... Ah... A box of talcum powder. Or no, a comb for my bleached hair.... 🤭🤣
Just popping in to say hello.
🤗😉
Have a nice Friday and a great weekend.

It has been a while! There is nothing quite like a field of stunning color to make my day!

I hear you! I might have a whole dollar! What will I buy?
I love when you pop in to say hello!

Hola!! Have a great weekend too! Happy Easter!

I found out what I could buy with half a dollar today: a ticket to the Rancho Boyeros Agricultural Fair, relatively close to my house.
Then you have to figure out what you would do with your whole dollar. Hahaha... Happy Easter.

Hehe... You are welcome and thanks for sharing.

They look so pretty! I love Tulip season, this place looks just like Holland!
Here in my area are plenty of Tulip fields in Spring as well, but Holland is still to cold for them to bloom. But soon!

It does remind me a little bit of Holland! The rows and rows of tulips! Soon, they are almost ready to pop over there! I can hardly wait for the photos! Thank you for dropping by an leaving your words.
