Amanzimtoti Life And Times At Hutchinson Park

Walk, Kick, Run, Cycle, Bat or Ball

Whether you wish to do sport, enjoy a riverside walk, watch sport, have a pint or enjoy a meal it all happens at this sports center.

IMG_3479.JPG

We meander the grounds as we have done over many years, this last visit I took to photographing the signage on some of the sports available.

IMG_3461.JPG

Sports clubs are never free, paying membership fees to be affiliated to the club, use of facilities, purchase their team colours to wear with pride, you buy your equipment, all in all to join any clubhouse you pay your way.

IMG_3464.JPG

What is on offer, squash, tennis, baseball, cricket, football/soccer, rugby, cycling, athletics, bowls, sometimes dog training, or canoeing when water conditions are right.

IMG_3482.JPG

Lords and Legends Sports Bar where anyone can visit for a breakfast, lunch or dinner.

IMG_3471.JPG

Cyclists have a large area with tracks and ramps to enjoy.

IMG_3478.JPG

Cyclists clubhouse signage.

IMG_3480.JPG

Athletics Club meet up for time trials, large marathon events, athletics club house with cordoned off area.

IMG_3472.JPG

Practice makes perfect from within the training nets for cricket.

IMG_3473.JPG

Tennis courts with clubhouse in the background, behind tennis courts squash courts, using another entrance to the park.

IMG_3477.JPG

Adjacent using same Tennis/Squash courts parking area is the Rugby clubhouse seen to the left of this photo, across the road Library and Civic Center. More cricket nets available here for practicing in.

IMG_3475.JPG

Main entrance parking to Lords and Legends, Cycling, Athletics, Baseball where many park when visiting there is a playground for the children to enjoy time in the sunshine as well.

IMG_3476.JPG

Cows meander through, although this does not make many exceptionally happy, it is a way of life, one learns to respect/expect the animals guided by a herdsman, most move the cattle through as quickly as possible, avoiding sports fields using pathways!

IMG_3466.JPG

Dogs being walked at the time, much excitement when the lumbering large beasts appear.

Area & History

Hutchison Park is set on the banks of Amanzimtoti River reasonably close to the river mouth, Illanda Wilds is on the opposite bank to the river to sports venue, an ideal space for bird watching. It provides visitors and locals with sporting facilities, a library, and a large civic center. (Library and civic center now in desperate need of repair being neglected under Ethekweni Municipality, time for local residents to take up the challenge!)

29th April 2023 hosted the 60th Highland Gathering at Hutchinson Park, a fund raising event currently run by Lions Clubs International since 1978 - 2023 raising funds to meet needs challenges faced by local community. Prior years hosted possibly by local community giving an idea as to how long the land has been used to entertain the local residents and inland visitors.

Amazintoti Lodge Old Church in Ross Street had a stone laid in October 1935, Picardy-Bazooka Shellhole stone laid by MOTH organization in 1950 at the bowling club giving a glimpse into the past of the town.

Trains made travel possible, first train arrived in 1897 under steam hauling two goods trucks, two passenger trucks and the brake van. A hotel built in 1898 to cater to holidaymakers from inland Johannesburg on special trains arranged.

Amazimtoti as a destination was first seen in 1928 as a holiday town, then later developed into a small coastal Township in 1939. Later a Borough in 1952, then in 1961 amalgamated into a single Municipality with Isipingo Beach and Isipingo Rail, 1994 fell under eThekweni Municipality which is the greater Durban region. Source Research

Hutchison Park and Illanda Wilds up the Toti River visiting this park is part of the history of the town, open for all to visit. Very little is documented as to when Hutchinson Sports Center originally opened, whether it was by mutual decision of the residents in town.

Future generations hopefully are willing to protect, preserve this park with benches donated by community, braai facilities available to enjoy a picnic out watching sport at no charge. Everything you arrive with will be purchased somewhere, please leave only footprints after your stay!

All in one place. I guess if the membership fee is not that expensive that would ber a very nice bargain to be part of the park, since it offers a lot of place for different activities.

Visiting the park is free, joining whichever sports club is choice of individual. Sports clubs have been assisting for many years to keep neat and tidy. Many residents join groups to assist with upkeep or donate toward new park benches which makes me think it was started by many smaller clubs expanding into one large area it currently is now.

I believe that in much of the world clubs like this are paid, it is the best way to keep them in good condition and acceptable for members to use.
I love this sports center, you have all the sports in one place.
I appreciate you letting us know the whole story about it.
I take this opportunity to wish you a splendid weekendHello dear friend @joanstewart good day

It is a very large area which was set aside yet very little information available which is surprising.

It takes a community to keep a place going, with so many sports clubs in one place makes sense combining. Most venues host their own smaller events, larger halls are rented out to churches, weddings or other requirements.

!LUV have a wonderful weekend and thanks for visiting.

Slowly, all in African time @hivebuzz 😅 Have a great weekend!

You will find me at the soccer club and if there is a table tennis you will find me there as well.

Beautiful looking park Joan.
Happy werkend

My sons played soccer here when they were youngsters, table tennis was set up in the hall on special nights of the week, darts games arranged, dancing at one time. Very special memories over the years spent here!

Happy Friday, Rand has gone down the drain, government need lesson about "Don't throw the baby out with the bathwater", shenanigans again! You got out at the right time!

Those must be lovely moments, I could do with more than soccer and table tennis.

You always manage to make me smile, I saw the headlines about the Rand down against the Dollar but didn't check. I will probably check it out sometime.

You got out at the right time!

Lol yes 😃

Special indeed went with U10 and U8 driving all around Durban for games at other clubhouses enjoying the game, designated driver!

Over 20:1 yesterday, so a little score to cheer you up!

Lol, a good performance should put a smile on the face of the designated driver.

Mom's taxi!

Lol yes 😃

Also called parenting! 😃

Played cricket and rugby here over 30 years ago and only recognise the top grass bank. Looks far more developed from what I remember as there wasn't much around the grounds in those days.

Toti has grown as have the grounds, buildings have been repurposed to use for sportsbar where rugby, athletics and cricketers shared bathrooms and hall.

Peaceful surroundings and a well-maintained park - everything you need for rest, walking and recreation. I would especially enjoy a walk along the river...

Quiet walks along the river under cover of dense trees, prolific bird life for photographers to enjoy.

Excellent reporting! It is good that there are such places for practicing various sports. Even animals visit them.😃

Well utilized today by humans, one can only imagine what wildlife roamed freely in earlier years.

Many apologies for running so late this week. Mother's Day was last weekend and it was impossible to do anything but Mother's Day all weekend, which was my pleasure to be treated so wonderfully. That put me severely behind in writing personal responses, but, I did get to read them all, as always. I read and voted your post, so thank you so much, but, it lacks the attention I usually give it.

#MarketFriday began as a way to reach out across the globe and learn about different cultures through their markets, especially local markets and farmers' markets, and eventually branched out and evolved over time from straight shopping to a cultural affair as it highlights how we differ and then again, how much we are alike. We have become a melting pot of culture, but it is still the Rituals, Festivals, food, architecture, and even your language/languages that separate us... Along with the fact that these things are normal for us. There are unwritten rules that rule our social behaviors. I see this as allowing for increased tolerance between cultures and nations, and opportunities to come together on an even playing ground. A strong culture can be beneficial to a country as it promotes unity, especially during a crisis, peaceful debate, and open dialogue. I have learned so much about all of you and it has been an amazing experience. I can only hope that learning about each other can help us work together for a peaceful world.

Thank you for being a part of #MarketFriday

I can't believe I left this one until it was late, the night I put the next #MarketFriday out. I feel so embarrassed as you are so on top of everything. Although I think these are wonderful, the spaces they take up had to come from somewhere, and that is the part that makes it a hardship. Not so much for us though...

It makes it handy to be in one place. Hi, Joan!

We are not on top of much of late, very topsy turvy, either no electricity or no internet connection even on fibre lines.

No need to apologize ever, after all we are all human!

Sports fields are very handy being in one place with much on offer, it's a pity no one documented much about how it all came about, I love history.

Have a glorious weekend and take care Denise xxxx
