Told by the specialist today that my left knee is kaput and will urgently have to be replaced.
I have a CD of the x-rays and rhe scans and yes, it's bone to bone.
Wakes me at least 5 times at night with sharp pains.
Back will also have to wait as we have to to the priorities first.

Cancelled the op today Lady Joan. Not enough money.
Govt. hospital with Covid around is not a good idea and they will refuse as we have a Medical Aid.
We are on the bottom rung of the med aid and today they told us that we should upgrade to a higher plan that will cost my entire salary to pay per month. So no can do.

So doing a pre-authorization did not work, with all these hidden rules these private medical insurance companies take money and run.
Inquire into government hospital, this covid is another excuse to slow down services. Hospitals are still clean even when run down, doctors are just as good as the private high earners, in fact more often than not there being dedicated.

My older sister had a knee replacement in a government hospital up north under haggard conditions as we had to take her food. After what I saw there, I am totally allergic to hospitals.
Although I must say that the doctor did a great job, as she is fine now.

If able to get breakdown on prices, where major expense is you may be able to negotiate.
Sister-in-law had hip replacement, survived the food (which was not grand), brother was in same governement hospital said very basic, but clean, extremely high noise levels, both were happy with doctors and that is why they were there.
Yes also paid medical aid throughout their lives and could not afford it when retrenched under all this BBBEEE BS.
Moral of the story you pay, possibly never use, then in older age unable to keep monthly premiums going and you take what you can get.
