Cat Mom Diary #04 |An unexpected trip to the Vet Clinic. Osiris is in pain!

in Hive Pets2 years ago (edited)

Fear crept up in my veins after just 10 minutes of watching my pet cat Osiris struggle to pee. He was just in this sitting position about to urinate but nothing happens. I'd notice he was straining all the time as he constantly moves from one spot to another but still no signs of urine. And with this, I panicked.

I panicked because Osiris is my first pet Cat. It's my first time having a cat as my companion. Cats are more independent and stubborn compared to dogs which I like since sometimes I'm out or traveling, and I don't need to worry about him most of the time. However, living here at the beach with him, we get to spend most of the time together so I would notice a lot of stuff going on with him.

He still was doing great the night before, even chasing a giant lizard around the room. At first, I didn't want to be dramatic or be bothered with it so I contacted my go-to fellow cat parent and told him about my situation. As far as he was concerned, Osiris should be taken to the vet to ease my nerves. But I knew something was wrong as I googled the internet as to why my cat was acting the way he was. It might be urinary blockage which was already a serious thing for male cats!

Anyways, 2 hours has passed and nothing seemed to change and so I decided to rush him to the nearest veterinary clinic which was in the next town! Thirty minutes of tricycle ride going to Bogo, Cebu. Good thing, Osiris was calm during our short trip.

It isn't my first time visiting the Bogo Claws and Paws Animal Clinic as they were the only ones selling cat litter in this town!

Everything was "almost" smooth as I visualized it to be. Once I got there, there was only one pet and fur parent waiting in line for the doctor. And just 5 minutes after filling up the form, it was our turn. I like the doctor's energy - calm and reassuring. I explained to him what I've observed from Osiris's behavior this morning. Then, the assistant took Osiris and held him down as the doctor checked on his lower body.

Osiris got so mad or was screaming in pain when the doctor touched his lower legs. After that, the doctor asked me if Osiris was intentionally hit by a vehicle as he was in great pain. And I swear, I didn't know that Osiris was injured and simply hiding his pain. I assured the doctor that no such incident happened (that I know of). After a few more minutes of feeling into Osiris' body, the doctor informed me that his bowel isn't distended yet so nothing critical to worry about so he might just have some bacterial infection causing the difficulty in urinating.

Antibiotics were injected into Osiris - two shots! Osiris was so pissed and mad. The doctor informed the assistant to let Osiris run loose inside the clinic after the injections were administered as he knows he will be in pain. And we did just that. Osiris was running around the clinic - verbalizing his intense anger at us and to the fellow cats inside the room. The doctor was even sweet and comforting when Osiris jumped into his chair and was directing his anger at him. 😭 Agatha (the doctor's cat) wanted to come close to Osiris but to no avail.

IMG20220808123040.jpg

After that, I was given a list of medications for Osiris. Hopefully, we won't have to go back to the clinic anytime soon! After a couple of minutes, Osiris didn't seemed to calmed down. That's when they had to catch him using a towel and put him inside our travel bag.

IMG20220808123451.jpg

Although the check-up fee was only Php 350 or $6.25, the medicines made the visit more expensive. So we ended with a total bill of Php 2,180 or $38.9. But this is simply nothing compared to the relief I had after the doctor said that Osiris was in no critical condition and should be doing well in a couple of days.

Last advice: Always trust your gut instinct with your pets. Don't wait for a couple more hours or even days to have them check with a doctor. Animals are so good at hiding their pain and it might be too late for us to help them if we delay that trip to the doctor.

Shoutout to the amazing doctor and staff at Bogo Claws and Paws Animal Clinic!

Update: Osiris is eating and drinking well and has been able to pee normally after we visited the vet.

So glad that you took him to the vet so quickly as male cats can die pretty fast from urinary blockages.

My old darling boy Chad was in that same situation, but it didn't cost $38, it costs literally hundreds of dollars to see the vets here- and then there's the cost of the medication on top of that...

And all animals hide their pain from their owners. Its actually instinctive for them as in the wild all animals are prey for the larger animals, so they can't show weakness.

Did the vet do any blood tests or take urine and faecal samples too?

Did the vet take xrays?

I hope that there is nothing more serious wrong and that the vet did everything to find the root cause.

Love to Osiris for me and Indy and we hope that he gets better asap and stays well!

Don't hesitate to search on the internet for any concerns, that's how I have now learnt how to be a bird mum...I've only ever had cats and dogs and a couple of chickens too, but Parrots are totally different...(extraordinarily loud and sooo incredibly messy..)

😭 I did read this on the internet and I panicked! So far, the doctor didn't do any xray, fecal and urine tests, and bloodwork. He mentioned that we are only going to do that if Osiris still finds it hard to pee after our first visit. And glad we haven't gone for our second visit yet because its pretty much expensive! and the medications make it a lot more costly! but anything for our pets, right? 😊

It's my first time having a cat as a pet so its nerve-wracking! However, having a pet parrot is whole different thing too! Indy looks so cozy in your sweater! I do enjoy watching videos of parrots being pretty much bossy but so funny! Is he like that too?

Osiris is doing better but I'm always observing if anything changes in his behavior!

Sorry for the delayed response sweets!

How is our gorgeous little man now?

Indy is in bird boarding for till the end of the month as I am at home for my dad's 87th birthday.I miss her so much..

This is her first time out of home and her first time ever of meeting other birds IRL.

She has seen other birds before, but through the windows and now she's in such a contrasting environment!

When she's with me, she's got a very colourful, open space to be in and a huge cage- which she is only in when I'm at work, otherwise she just hangs out on my shoulder (sometimes I feel a bit like a pirate with my parrot on my shoulder...lol...)

And we go to bed late and get up late (due to my jobs), she has music all day and night and leads a pretty human kind of life really...

And now she's in a bland room with no windows and unnatural lighting, with the lights turning on early and going off at 4pm and certainly no music....no cuddles....she's going to be so bored...

I feel soooo bad for her, but it had to be done I'm afraid. 😪

No worries my love! It's all good. For the past days, I've been trying to take a break from social media too - being in touch with the nature, swimming every day, grounding at the beach, reading some books.

sometimes I feel a bit like a pirate with my parrot on my shoulder...lol..

I bet Indy feels like an amazing first mate too! She is well pampered and definitely has been enjoying so much love coming from you! I'm sure she misses you too!

Well, August is coming to an end. Just a few more days! If they could talk, I bet she has a lot of things to tell you, or perhaps complain about. 😂

Me and Osiris had a stressful week! but I'll probably write about it later or tomorrow. Thought August was a bit chill for me but the universe has other plans!

Cheers to your dad!

Oooh that sounds like a few days that I need to have for the rest of my life...🤣..

Yes I'm a bit worried about what Indy will have to say to me when I get back and more so about what she will continue to say when we actually get home because like I said, she staying next to a very handsome male IRN by the name of Blue who says I love you all the time...

I hope that your little man is ok!!!

I'm glad that Osiris is better now. I'd panic and spend that much also for my pet just to get better. Thanks for sharing your experience with the vet. I really hope that you wont have to go back again to the vet. Keep safe always

I think you forgot to finish the </div at the end of your post hehe.

Thank you so much! Going to the vet really is worrisome but its more worrisome if our pets gets ill.

I think you forgot to finish the </div at the end of your post hehe.

Thanks! haha. edited it already!

I truly agree with what you said, Hope everything is well with you guys! Keep safe always

You're welcome

Waaah I sighed in relief after knowing that Osiris' condition isn't that bad. You are right ate, we should always trust our instincts when it comes to our furbabies. They are so good at hiding their pain, that's why we should be aware and observant with minimal changes in their behaviour.

Good thing you're observant!
Are you sure it's your first time? 'Cause you handled the situation as a furmom very well for Osiris.
Yey, good to know Osiris is doing great already 💖

Much appreciated @cthings! Tbh, I tried to be calm but if it was the old me. I would have already gone crazy worried.

Hala iring.

Even animals knows how to hide thier pain. Get well Osiris ♥️

Indeed! He is doing much better now! Can't wait to go chase around the backyard!

Glad your cat is now fine! Whew!
Such a cute little fellow, strong and independent 😌

Like me... strong, independent, and still single!
HUGOOTTTT HAHA.
But thank you. he is doing fine now!

Samoka sa last 😂
We never know, imong makadayon fur parent pud diay. Naks!

I'm glad he's ok! That's definitely a reason for concern - even the way he acted at the vet's is strange 😲

I was so relieved to read Osiris is not in serious condition. That first time you notice something wrong is indeed scary.

Pets are an important member of the family! You really care for him, he's so lucky to have you for his human. Have a wonderful day! 🧡

Medication is ongoing but he now seems to be doing much better! I think we are both lucky to find each other!

Thank you for dropping by! Appreciate it.
