This is my post to enter into August's @Dreemport's crazy challenges to make you a better person, writer, and Hiver. Dreemport is collaborating with the Scholar & Scribe Community this month.
Question one of Task #1
I'd like you to start out by describing your favorite dessert. Not only the flavor, texture, and scent... but WHY is this your favorite? Is there some memory associated with it? Some special feeling? ~ @DreemSteem
The Story goes something like this...
My parents grew up in the 1950s. To get married, you needed to be twenty-one or get your parent's signature on your marriage license to say they gave you permission to marry. The bride and groom were also required to pass a blood test to ensure they did not have syphilis.
My parents worked hard and played hard. If you were going out for dinner, you went to a nightclub. Pads of butter were brought to the table wrapped and chilled on ice in a tiny silver bowl. The table was always set with free breadsticks that the children could eat while you waited for your meal to come. One pad of cold butter was the perfect size for one breadstick.
You were taught table manners. There were no throwing fits. There was no acting up. You were dressed in your best outfit for the evening.
Dinner always started with my parents getting cocktails and me getting a Shirly Temple drink while discussing what they would order. If you were lucky enough, the superclub had a children's menu, and you could get a hotdog. If you were not so fortunate, you ended up with some sort of pasta with an odd-tasting sauce.
My favorite place to go for dinner was a superclub called Mannings. It was a short drive into the city. My Dad knew everyone in the place. You would walk in holding your parent's hand after the lecture in the parking lot on how you would behave, and if you did, you would be able to pick your own dessert.
It was worth every minute of being good because they had the best desserts back then!
I fell in love with a dessert called Strawberry Schaum Torte. The dessert starts with a base of slow-baked meringue, pipped into a circle with edges about three inches high. The meringue becomes light and melts in your mouth.
On top of the meringue is a scoop of the best vanilla bean ice cream you can buy. On top of the ice cream was homemade whipped cream which covered the ice cream and the meringue. To top it all off, fresh muddled strawberries are ladled on top. If it is your birthday, you could get a candle on top.
The first spoonful melted in your mouth. The sweetness from the strawberries and the shaum tort burst forth and filled you with glee. It was the perfect combination of sweet and creamy. To this day, I daydream about this dessert.

My Father would take me to Mannings for lunch whenever I had surgery. He knew I loved Strawberry Schaum Torte, and I also loved spending quality time with him. Over the years of growing up, it became our special thing to do.
Sadly the restaurant closed years ago as times changed and people stopped getting dressed up to go out to eat.
The closest recipe I ever found to the dessert made at Mannings is from the website The Cafe Sucre Farine. The website's recipe for Ridiculously Easy Lemon Poppy Seed Scones is killer also!

I have been on Hive for almost five beautiful years. I am very proud of that number too.
Have you ever written fiction before?
I learned to write on the blockchain, fiction, and nonfiction.
Are you familiar with Scholar & Scribe?
I am not! I feel bad that I have never come across this group before. Maybe... I should go back into hiding? Or do I dare see what they're all about? If I have gotten this far in writing my post, I should keep moving forward and see what this wonderful group has in store!
Are you expecting this to be a fun, challenging, or exciting challenge, or do you dread writing publicly? (Be honest - we are here to cheer you on!)
I think this challenge will be all of the above. I am hoping this challenge kicks me in the behind and helps me on the way to accomplishing something I have wanted to do for a very long time.
Are you going to TRY to go for the 3-part serial fiction (over 3 weeks), the engagement Bingo option, simply stick to SOME fiction this month for Scholar&Scribe or some other option altogether?
I am going to try very hard to go for the three-part fiction. It might not follow all of the rules as you see them, but in my mind, it will be three parts that belong together to make a whole story. That is all I can say for now. Either way, I will have fun trying to write something in the middle of the night because I do not want to let anyone down, myself included.
I can not wait to read more of what you all have in store over the next month.
It will be engaging in the end, this is all I know for sure.

Absolutely NO and absolutely YES to this! S&S is a very fun tribe and you know that I am not of the writing kind most of the time, so for me to say this... trust me.
But, Snook, that Torte - it kills me. Even the name, I guess its origin is in Germany and absolutely dislike these cream filled, merengue kind of cakes. They are so, so sweet. But - I do get the memories this brings for you. That is really nice. And - I would pluck off the fresh fruit from it, you could have the torte - LOL.
Let's see if we can do this challenge!

and you do not have to put ice cream in it. You can just have fresh fruit and maybe a little whipped cream or no cream. That is the beauty of it.
well, NOW I HAVE to stay and do all the challenges if you are. That was not fair!!!!!!!!!!! :D
I know you are not a writer most of the time so I can not wait to see what happens over the next month :D cuz I think you are a FABULOUS writer and artist!! :D

Hahahaha - you're inspiring! But for realz - I need a start! Wouldn't it be fun if we all started with the same prompt and just went with it? Not that I could do that - probably but just the idea. I did that in a painting class. We all had the same subject and... not template but inspiration to go by and, believe me, all pictures were so very different because everyone's style is so different. it was a real eye-opener.
Anyways, I hope I will find inspiration to write. No doubt though I'll have plenty to read. Like the story you come up with.

I never thought that it was once a rule to get signed consent of paremts for marriage.
I am curious to know how old you were at the time when you visitied that restaurant.
For the dreemport challenge you have decided gor the hardest thing. Hehe. At least, it seems the hardest to me. Good luck to you for this.....!

My parents got married in the 1950s. I am not sure when the laws changed :D
I do not remember not going out to superclubs with my parents. Back then they did not cater to children in restaurants. No crayons, no toys, BUT really great cold butter and breadsticks :D I miss those places now that I am older...
Hardest? No. Difficult? yes. But we BOTH know ahead of time what we want to do so nothing is impossible. We just have to take a deep breath and not overthink everything we do and soon you will have a long story you can divide into three parts :D
So really, we just need to write one story :D

I could just imagine how it was with your parents....giving signature or consent before getting married. How disciplinary their actions were! That's so cool and awesome. Those days rule were meant to not be broken but followed unlike our modernised world now.
As for the Dreemport challenge?
Everyone has been finding it a bit disturbing or even skeptical about it.. I guess we need the inspiration hehe. I have been reading articles based on this and am like...Cesca give this a shot...for the three part fiction....I wouldn't say I would but for the one part whole story I can.
And I love the desert...it looks how it tastes hehe...

The world is gradually losing a lot of old-school beauties due to advancements or what should I call it?
I was reading the story and I felt myself right in the story, those are definitely beautiful memories you will love to have again. I don't know what the dessert looks like but I am sure it taste really great.
Scholars and scribe community is new to almost everyone but I know we will have another great month with all the communities involved.
The world is..some of the things it is good they're gone but not everything.... I agree!

I loved that reminiscent picture that you drew for us from your childhood, growing up when etiquette and values were strong, and desserts were simply scrumptious, and always a real treat for the family!!!
I imagine those days spent with your father were very precious indeed. I had a lot of dental surgery when I was growing up, having been born with a hare lip and cleft palate, and I remember my Mom would buy me a little gift from the toy store and then also always take me to Woolworths in South Africa to get these little sets of chocolate gnomes (a great post dental treat, right?🤣)... but the best thing was waking up from surgery and seeing her...although I always felt incredibly nauseous after surgery... I am sure in those days the gas they used to knock you out must have been crappy stuff hahaha
I am very much looking forward to your 3-part fiction offering. I have no doubt that you will bring us something that draws us in and holds us captive, always with great perspective, emotion, and personality.

hehehe well - you took me down memory lane with you too! and I have never heard of this dessert before but I can feel the texture of the meringue and the strawberries all melting together with it...
and best of all, I can see you! Your little body, holding your dad's hand as you walked into the restaurant while you thought of all the ways to behave so you can get that dessert. oh my gosh what I wouldn't give to hav an actual snapshot of you in a pretty little dress just waiting for this dessert hehehehe
