July-September Homeschool Miscellany

in Home Edders29 days ago

15yo apparently only got beaten once or twice in all the rounds he played in his Warhammer tournament and placed (the winner was someone who had been playing a lot longer). We all agreed it was a pretty good outcome for a first tournament.

17yo was able to pass her level 6 badge in the first competition and 19yo got his level 7 badge in the second one (he had missed the first one due to illness and he and his coach decided to risk the do or die in the second competition as if he didn't get it then, he was out of states). I think most of 17yo's kids did alright.

On their first trip up (they took two this year) my parents had decided that they wanted to go to Cirque du Soleil and asked if it would be running when they got back. I looked it up for them and confirmed so they planned to book some tickets while they were back home. Later I was informed by sibling dearest that they wanted to know what days we were available to go as apparently we were going with them, and correctly garnered from my reaction that I had no idea about this.

The revolving stage was pretty cool though I know some of my kids (the ones I coach not necessarily the ones pictured) would have gotten so disoriented on it, some of them consciously or otherwise use the surroundings to navigate and would get confused with their routines if you turn them around.

We were apparently allowed to take photos and short videos, I wouldn't have taken video as I was too busy watching but I'm not sure why I didn't take any photos as there were several really cool parts. Maybe too busy watching.

The kids were really excited and inspired and 15yo developed a newfound appreciation for circus.

Comp season continued with the bigs doing well in regionals and 19yo's team making history as the club's historical first ever MAG 7 team.

In September we went to The Royal Show as my parents had never been before and wanted to see what it was like, it had been a few years since we had last been (we go every few years) and even longer since the one time Sprat had been. Our wanderings ended up more disjointed than usual as a result as we generrally attempted to stay together but people inevitably wandered off.

17yo and Sprat were quite proud of themselves for picking craft items which they thought were really good and should have won a prize and then actually reading the certificates and finding out most of their picks did actually place. They went on a few of rides and the boys joined them on a couple but chose not to go on the one they were eyeing off because they didn't like the price.

We also need to follow up on the Blacksmith Association as both the boys are interested and have been for a while.

15yo acquired and painted a tank and then lined up the models for me and the cat decided he wanted in on the action.

He's still in the rapid improvement phase and is currently scrambling together more pocket money to be able to get more models to do more painting.

This post also appears on my blog.

@gorc, @pixietrix and @shadowlioncub are each receiving 33% of the post payout.

Thanks for looking! ^_^

Come hang out on Discord with us!

As nicely painted as those models are, I do feel like the cat is going to win every time.

15yo and I were discussing that when he happily saw that his army was going to be the cover pic XD We thought it would be pretty close and if the army survived it would be a wipe with the tank and the mech barely scraping through because apparently they're both anti-tank things. He reckoned some of the troops would be lucky if they got a shot off XD

We of course didn't take into account that the cat would cheat and not take turns :D

Hahahaha, you can always trust a cat to always subvert expectations.

Have you seen @zakludick's content on Hive? Lots of great Warhammer explanations and battle reports and stuff.

Yep I have seen it and occasionally show it to youngest who then starts rambling about stuff I barely understand XD

I need to do more Battle Reports!

I am currently so busy I have just been doing reviews.

I am kicking off a narrative campaign (or two) tomorrow! Soon there will be posts about that!

It would be great if your kids got into black smithing! That’s a really good thing to have and can certainly be a lot of work but it’s a trade that’s in short supply in the day we live in.

I’ve never been to cirque but I have wanted to go for years. Hopefully we will see it sometime in the future!

Both have been interested for a while but I couldn't find anything for ages, and apparently this mob have a website but I could never find it?! o_O I guess my search-fu wasn't particularly strong on the day I was looking (and in fairness I did only look either on the one day or very infrequently, as I feel like there's way too much stuff on now).

What kind of things are blacksmiths needed for these days? I feel so ignorant right now x_x

Cirque du Soleil is pricey but worth it.

Blacksmiths do a lot of work for crafting things for fences and have a lot of relational work for people who do welding. I think a lot of times blacksmiths end up also doing welding because they are very closely related!

For example - blacksmiths can make custom wrought iron fence posts for a home or business. They can also make stair handrails and things of that nature. We've seen a few different blacksmith shops when we've been to autumn fairs and they really do make some cool stuff! This one guy who was about 19 or so said he started doing it and his business took off because not a lot of people were doing it and now he's making a pretty substantial amount of money!

Oh nice! I'll try to get on to that next year depending on if the boys are still interested. Thanks ^_^

Aha! Dark Angels!

My main army is Space Wolves, but I have Dark Angels too!

15yo said something about if you play Space Wolves you like vikings but can't escape the furry allegations. I don't know enough about Warhammer to understand that fully ^_^; I'm pretty sure he's told me why he likes Dark Angels (apparently that's the army he's decided to go with, and he's still very early stages) but I think it's mostly because they're green and that's his favourite colour XD

Your main army how many do you have?! :O

My 14yo has Tyranids and I have... various Imperial Forces...
