October Homeschooling Miscellany

in Home Edders2 years ago

13yo continued on his dessert presentation experiments, jumping on the Halloween bandwagon with this "vampire" themed one (the bananas were meant to be fangs), and the goblet was a prop we'd bought some other Halloween).

Towards the end of the week where we're running out of stuff and need to do more grocery shopping, there was this much simpler but still very delicious fare (can't go wrong with peanut butter as long as you're not allergic to peanuts).

15yo was telling me about a kdrama (I think) that she's been watching where one of the characters makes another character an origami frog as a good luck charm but the receiving character wasn't sure what it as as it was apparently very badly made. It put her in the mood to do some origami, she found the ancient scrapbook paper and I think had to look up instructions, and made a hopping frog. And googly eyes because they make everything better.

There is a video of it hopping on my blog, I haven't gotten around to making sure my stuff embeds properly and also from memory it only works for specific websites anyway.

13yo wanted to go to the zoo, 15yo was happy to come along and 17yo was supposed to but decided on te morning we were going that he was too tired.

We'd barely gotten there when 13yo followed in his brother's footsteps of being starving to death the second we got to where we were going despite having eaten before leaving so we got some food from a food truck (food was great but pricey), there were a few set up in the central grassy area as the zoo was rebuilding its food kiosks.

There was a discussion mostly between 15yo and 13yo that I only chipped in to on occasion to correct or clarify things as 15yo displayed a remarkable amount of economic knowledge for someone who is dyscalculiac, hates maths and has no interest in economics as she explained about rent at the zoo probably being expensive and inflation going up which would explain why the food truck food was so expensive.

I didn't take quite as many animal photos as I've accumulated a lot over the years. The meerkats are always popular, I'm trying to remember if there has been a zoo visit where we didn't stop by to see them.

I did grab one of this mouse majestically atop a branch in the nocturnal house which amused us for ages (15yo applied the term "majestic" and it might be a little bit hard to spot in this pic which was the better of the two, my closeup was horribly blurry as I do not have the steadiest of hands).

At select enclosures (there didn't seem to be a rhyme or reason to it, just whatever has his interest or stuck in his head at the time), 13yo would randomly babble animal facts that he'd picked up (possibly from a couple of channels on Youtube which presents a lot of biological facts in gamified or semi-sarcastic entertaining fashion). I wish I could remember what even a small chunk of it was, for a kid who reckons he's dumb and doesn't know even the basics about anything he sure knows a lot about a lot of things.

15yo has been really embracing her Asian heritage and identity as of late and that included looking at the animals and ecosystems around the South East Asian region, and that section of the zoo is her favourite anyway because she loves Komodo Dragons, so we have to visit every trip.

There are always shenanigans wherever we go so inevitably there was some monkeying around in the orang utan area.

The orang utans weren't impressed in thge slightest.

We made our way back towards the main entrance to the zoo, dropping by to see some other favourites along the way.

13yo and I butted heads a lot this month. Part of it was developmental (got similar in different ways from his siblings) and some of it was he'd decided that "the education is lacking" and that he was somehow "missing the basics" and he desperately wanted to go to school. I don't know what he thinks school is like as he has done some classes in homeschool group which were conducted very similar to how they would be done at school (books, worksheets, activities at a desk in an area set up as a classroom for a "period") and he had hated that and claimed he wasn't learning anything, it was just someone saying stuff and him colouring in a map. He also generally refuses to do anything in a workbook or that involves long form writing.

We then had a huge argument because I said he could go next year if he really wanted to but to let J know as he would be dealing with it (I'd already been there done that with 15yo and had not enjoyed the experience) and for whatever reason that really offended him.

J then tried to prep him by making him do some workbooks, when told to try it and ask for help if he was having trouble he got offended that he still wasn't being "taught" and was just doing things on his own , and when J tried to sit with him to show him how to do something he got offended that J was "doing it for him" so we're not sure even he knows what he's expecting.

This post also appears on my blog.

November/December should appear sometime in the next couple of days, I'm frantically trying to catch up so I can compile the report for the moderator very very soon as our meeting is at the end of the month aaaaahhhhhh

That dessert looks amazing for peanut butter lovers. I do like it but only can stand so much of it at a time lol.

I too tend not to take photos every time we visit the zoo. I feel the pics start to look the same from visiting the same enclosures.

That monkeying around looked like a lot of fun.

My kids are still fairly young but my older ones have expressed they’d like to know what it’s like to ride on a school bus. Well hey, there are five siblings in this house and we have a van…that should be close enough. 😅

We are currently involved with a homeschool co-op because they were getting bored with just being at home. Sometimes they are thrilled about it but other times claim it’s too much work. I think letting them have the experience of being amongst other peers and having different teachers has been good for them. I think it’s always a matter of wanting what we don’t have or experiencing what we never experienced before. I wonder if this is what your son is going through? Maybe it could just be a phase?

It was VERY peanut buttery. Pretty much made the ice cream the equivalent of a full meal, think I put on a kilo frrom it XD

I feel pretty much the same about taking the same pictures at the same enclosures ^_^;

LoL! The public school kids usually take public transport to school here, if it was similar where you are you could just take a bus somewehere during the time that kids would normally be taking the bus to school XD

It's entirely possible it's just a phase or that it could be a case of wanting what you don't have/trying something you haven't tried before/grass is greener. If not for various issues I would just do what I did with my daughter and let him try it out and see if he survives (except that either way J would still be having to manage it, was way too freaking hard for me).

I did try to get him to go back to homeschool group but he wasn't interested. I really think he doesn't know what he wants x_x I probably should have done this last year but we had a lot going on so it didn't enter my thick skull. This year I'm basing his entire program around bartending (his latest obsession, he has been interested in hospitality for a while so i guess this was a progression? and also I'm just straight up dumb as I have spent most of the time I've been homeschooling basing their entire programs around their obsessions XD). Will see how we go I guess ^_^;

They have rode a public bus maybe one time when they were really little (I'm sure they don't remember lol). That's a good idea though.

Yes it seems he’s at the age where he’s exploring his interests but hasn’t yet found exactly what he wants to stick with. My 12 year old is kind of at that stage now where she wants to try a variety of things but hasn’t quite stuck with anything yet.

I love the fact that we get to see firsthand what they seem to gravitate to and then once we know they really like something we can help them hone in those skills and encourage them further :)

He's been obsessing about bartending for a good few months so I really should have known better XD We did the same thing when he was very interested in marine biology some years back, but I didn't have a major thing distracting me back then, that's what I'm blaming XD

issue has since been resolved

It looks like it was a nice experience. I really liked your post 😊💕

Thank you ^_^

But what a good walk and without a doubt with very good learning.

Greetings and blessings

It's not the largest as far as city zoos go but definitely big enough and a lot of learning did happen :D

Kids can be hard work sometimes...if only you had the precious you could put it on them and they'd disappear.

Doesn't the precious just turn them invisible? That sounds like it would make things worse/more troublesome XD

This is true, but you don't have to see them and out of sight, out of mind, or so they say right?

Had no idea you were doing homeschooling! I grew up with that and remember fondly those kinds of outings. It's a great fun education.

Oh wow lucky you :D There are times I wish I could have homeschooled, but at the time I was actually going to school I never knew it was an option and I don't think my parents did either (not that I think they would have considered it if they did, at the time school was seen as the pinnacle of education and the only possible way to get anywhere in life).

Do you remember if you mostly did a lot of outings and your own research or did you have to do a lot of workbooks/assignments/etc too? I like learning about different styles :D

I had a bit of both. I had about 3-5 hours of book work to do average, after around the age of 5 it was mostly on my own in the books, and my mum checked the work and we reviewed it if things were tough. Maths and science stuff was with my dad - and we often had hands on experiments, crafts and art. Lots and lots of art - the outings were mostly with other families doing the same thing, including sports, fairs, and museums and workshops - and other things like that. In New Zealand the community for it was tight - had a good time. In Colombia now, during my teens.. it was a different story, so for the arts and things, it was more book work than usual, but I finished around 18 going through the curriculums - and got into 3D during that time in my teens. Alos.. games. But the 3D artwork was really thanks to the extra time of not knowing spanish, no social events really - so a lot of time in the computer learning what I could with limited internet and physical books and manuals of the 3D software I was learning at the time. I think.. thanks to that, it drives my career today.

Throughout it all, one of my favorite subjects was storytelling, where I could do art and make stories for free reign as one of the subjects - otherwise it was all the usual. The social sciences I liked a lot too - there were many subjects. Most of my siblings usually had customized and had it more laxed than mine, I was the oldest of the 5 kids, and my mum was a stay at home one - so.. that made things different. Each of my siblings have a very different experience.

But.. with such little achademic time, weekly or regular visits to the local library and a tonne of lego and toys was a lot of my past time, later got into technics, which... may or may not have influenced why and how i do 3D today too. I am not sure if my parents condemned me to my career, or freed me to do it! My other siblings either went into primary education, machine learning and economic trading, music, or.. lucked out animating 2D memes daily over the quarentine and getting millions of followers on Youtube, earning more than any of us just for existing from Patronage.

3-5 hours per day or per week O_O I think I would have been lucky if mine did that per month never mind per week XD

Sounds amazing and what I've been trying to do with my kids, though they may remember things differently XD

I don't think I would be calling it a condemnation if you're enjoying it XD and I think you're pretty lucky that you arrived at it in your teens, I was in my 20s and late into a uni degree that I'd transferred into before I discovered it and there was many years on top of that of trying to figure out what the hell I'm doing. I kind of wish I'd gotten into it earlier but I'm probably too old to have been able to get into it too much earlier XD

Sounds like a wide variety of interest in you and your siblings! If it's any consolation I've got one that is going into trades (he's doing a construction elective this semester, but the actual apprenticeship he's going for has fitting in the name and involves big machines), one that's going into childcare and one that's aiming for hospitality (specifically anything to do with alcohol, and he pours a mean drink but is not allowed to sample his own work for another four years XD and can't get into the course he wants to get into til next year due to a minimum age requirement).

Guess learning what you need with the shorter academic time and having more time to discover and explore interests really is a thing, possibly even a good one ;D

New Zealand to Colombia is a pretty big move O_O

Thanks for sharing that, given me a few more insights :)
