How Hive Could Incentivise Creators Rather than Farmers

Two posts made me think thoughts (dangerous!) so here is my response all blended up into one post.

Both allude to the fact that on Hive currently we incentivise playing the system rather than the act of creation. While we are on the surface a content creator community, in fact a lot of people are doing the bare minimum to get votes or get funding.

An option, as evidenced by Peakd, is to run ads and pay out from that ad revenue. This is how Web 2 generally works, and it is why we can NOT pay for most of the content we consume.

As the linked authors point out, how many of us open Hive blogs as our early morning routine versus our favourite news site or social media app?

I spend a LOT of time on YouTube consuming content, barely 10 minutes here despite trying.

One of the things I like about the ad-driven monetization model is it rewards user activity rather than passive "automatically vote for my buddies when they post something without reading it".

The negative is ... well, ads.

BUT that negative is also a big reason we do pay for things that are otherwise ad-supported. I pay for YouTube and Duolingo purely to not see ads, that could work on Hive too :)

For eg. Peakd could cost some small delegation or so many Hive or HBD per month to not see ads, with that income being pooled and paid out to the people who get the logged in views.

Those who don't get readers would still get their usual automated follow votes but everyone else would be rewarded for creating stuff people actually consume!

One of the things Leo do very well is you can log in without a Hive account. I think that is very smart - people can think about or know about the crypto aspects later, onboard them first with the value being the content and the community!

What do you think?

I liked your idea about allowing new viewers to join this platform the same way they join Leo. This way, they wouldn't just be creators; they could also be visitors. Great idea!

When comparing Hive with other platforms, it depends on SEO, and SEO also depends on our content. If we keep posting, this platform will have active users who create content, especially original content.

I also want to mention that on platforms like YouTube, there are other ways to support creators financially, such as Super Thanks, where someone can suddenly send money in any currency to a creator, or memberships. Similarly, Twitch has a system where subscribers have to pay to subscribe to a channel they like, just to support that person.

So, there are many monetization methods that could be added. One important thing I always find limiting is the 7-day reward, although tipping has been introduced.

If a new change is implemented—allowing posts, such as a music track, to generate income beyond 7 days—creators could earn more as more visitors discover and engage with their work.

I start here, I've also purchased some community tokens so I can have somewhat meaningful upvotes in some community front ends.

One of the ways I use Hive is to create an article on Hive, and then push it out via Twitter, Reddit, or Facebook. I even do this content about local civics and politics. Many of my neighbors and people in my County are now reading content stored on Hive without fully grasping the implications of that.

There is definitely some complexity to getting curated here, but Hive has utility beyond that.

I really don't like social site that won't let you see anything without creating an account. Hive is much more open. I'm not totally against ads as the platforms need to pay their costs and that is an established way to do it.

We do need to highlight the quality posts and not just those from people with powerful friends.

Yeah I'm thinking logging in would be how you get to see the content without ads plus other perks. Logged out you see ads and can't post articles

We need more users and yes I would rather pay x amount of HIVE than not see ads. We need more pulling power from a killer dapp or something people want to be part of. The marketing on HIVE is a worry as we are failing ourselves by not using common sense.

It would not be so up for debate if there were some metrics showing an ROI on our current marketing efforts but nobody seems to provide any.

At least the funding that goes towards tools and upkeep of hive have tangible outcomes.

I think that is a very good idea!
