@ganjafarmer recently wrote a post asking if HIVE was over. What started as a reply to his post grew in size to warrant a post of its own. So here it is...
Is HIVE over?
There is a community here so it is hard to predict if HIVE will ever be over, however it is my feeling that since the fork it is safe to say that the experiment, as Dan Latimer defined STEEM, has proven to be broken.
The STEEM takeover showed the vulnerability of the Proof of Stake system. If one sorts through my bags they will find some ETH, which may seem a contradiction from what was just written. My logic of holding ETH is based on the belief that Wall St. now owns ETH, yet Wall St. will want to see ETH's value increase. My HODLing strategy is just me coming along for the ride. In fact all my Dolphin tokens found their way to ETH after the fork. The ROI has been fabulous to say the least.
In my mind the HIVE/STEEM fork was not done with the same Wall St. principle. It was about power and control of the majority of top witnesses at the time. They did not care if the price of the token went down, only that they would not loose their position to mint more of them. Their propaganda even turned Sun's atomic swap idea into some kind of sinister plot instead of the useful technology it is; employed, even, in BTC's Lightning Network.
Bottom line is, how could anyone think that a fork could be a good thing for the average user (although the forked funds were a nice parting gift to buy more ETH)?
There was the Bot Debate that raged on STEEM for years. How could we have Proof of Brain if bots were doing the voting? Well it has recently taken a more dangerous lurch. AI can now generate the posts which the bots now vote on. It is my suspicion that many regular posters are now using ChatGPT to do the leg work. This will make the social media aspect of HIVE more than broken but, instead, a huge joke.
HIVE is, and will likely continue to be, a wonderful utility token to be used in gaming and other projects, so it will likely have a future of some sort. Yet its days of a blockchain Facebook are numbered in my opinion.
Over? Maybe not. Broken beyond repair? Yes, though perhaps this has been the case from its first release, so let's just call it terminally flawed.
Azicron an similar users are breaking Hive beyond repair ;)
Speaking of which, did @berniesanders just get bored or what?
I guess he got bored with the reigning greed...
My later experience on STEEM was people whining about bots and whales and flags - when all I wanted to do is post and earn and interact. I saw value in that alone. After a refreshing break after the fork, and renewed optimism with HIVE, things seemed back on track. But now I see the complaining happening again. If the big investors declare HIVE a lost cause, a failed experiment, a terminally ill patient, then whoever dumps the fastest wins - if this is the new game then cash out quick and feel good getting out before it dips below $0.10.
But if we remain optimistic about the vision and forge ahead towards the vision, then there is incentive to invest, to powerup, to grow and improve our content and consistency. Then we all can enjoy a fair market value for HIVE that is consistent with the content provided.
It's my opinion that the reason big traders never want to shelter their gains with HIVE (or HBD) is because of the pessimism they read about on the chain. Who wants their massive trading gains sheltered on a "terminally flawed" blockchain?
The more we focus on what's WRONG with HIVE, the less time we focus on what's RIGHT with HIVE. Maybe i'm a bit naive, but I'm still optimistic about this chain, otherwise I would have left a long time ago. I still enjoy posting and earning and interacting here. I still see value in that.
Your thoughts do not sound naive, to me, at all. If we survived @berniesanders then we can get through this as well. After my long break my interest has been revived, yet it is with the vision of HIVE as a utility token for my base64 dApp idea.
ChatGPT threatens the social media aspect of HIVE in my opinion. You can check out two experiments of mine which were created with ChatGPT. Both did pretty well by my normal reward metrics. The first was pretty much straight from ChatGPT, while the second was massaged a bit more.
Example 1
Example 2
I'm excited to see any app ideas here on HIVE. Storing image files on the chain is brilliant. I have this distopian vision of the post-internet world, where the blockchain text and code data is preserved, but all the images are lost. Since many of my posts are image driven, this is pretty significant.
ChatGPT is still pretty transparent in my opinion. I'm sure it'll improve over the next few years, but for now it's still easy to discern. If I were to have clicked on either of those examples, I would have smelled something off. I see they still gained some upvotes, but if only AI generated content were used over a period of time, I believe the upvotes would begin to disappear... if they are human upvotes.
If people get upvotes on AI generated posts, I see it no different than upvotes on a single image or some silly pointless text. At least the AI information has some (potential) value for the reader! Should the account owner get rewarded for AI content? No, but I don't see is as any worse (perhaps it's better) than a lazy, no effort post. It actually takes a bit of effort to think of BS for the AI to generate! So I guess I don't see AI as much of a threat. Unless some sort of auto-posting AI generated script is used, it still takes brains and creativity just to use ChatGPT to come up with topics and content.
Perhaps up the road an alternate portal, like peakd, etc., could be worked on to decode the images while viewing posts. The base64 encoded images on a shard chain could then act like the AWS cloud servers do now with images in posts. First things first though. :)
You are quite right. Having worked with ChatGPT a lot as a programming mentor, one dead giveaway is its use of bullet points. That is not to say that others do not use that technique in their writing on the chain, however it seems a consistent style of ChatGPT.
You make many good points and have relieved my concerns somewhat.
Thanks for your feedback!
When 'free' downvotes was enabled he was told that we were done letting him run over people and he cashed out, afaik.
Hw's is interested in any ai content you can find, it has been added to their scope.
Good riddance to Bernie. Hope he gets help.
Will keep an eye out.
No one wants to invest over acidyo and company owning the blockchain.
It's not a good investment when you are just supporting that scum...
And circle jerk? Oh that is the biggest one here. And they constantly bully others. How about that BIDBOT WAR!
And then with them bullying ecency to remove boosting votes?
Very clearly the issues with hive are from the leadership of odc and it's HW lackeys.
Hive needs to be cleaned out or it's going to continue to tank...
Well. The writing is on the wall. You got the assholes that own the entire blockchain and continually destroy any innovation they possibly can.
Seriously? Hive has shit the bed.
Although if you are a suckup and you produce the same no effort garbage content? You too can get paid!
It's looking like hive is just circling the drain.
Oh wait then you have holozing come out! The perfect company to backstab others on the block chain! And that's exactly what they did. Stabbed Psyberx right away to get their investors... Which ended up running off how many from the block chain?
The shitheads of hive need to be bought out and sent packing. Or the entire platform is done. And have a feeling they are going to be going down with the ship.
Voted! You deserve it. And you aren't wrong!
First time hearing about what happened to Psyberx. It seemed to have unique blockchain potential by stepping out of the card game format.
Freedom of speech.
Freedom of access to wealth.
Both are constantly under attack on Hive.
Those with the most power are so greedy, they find infinite ways to further increase their grip of control over the masses, and the wealth.
Personally, I never cared about the wealth. I am here for a free social media alternative, to view and upload media. Sometimes for current news and interest, and sometimes for past archiving valuable content search engine companies tend to hide. Anytime I learn a friend of mine was accidentally blacklisted by my front end, or I don't realize their content became silently hidden/missing, I go nuts!
Eventually I am concerned all social media, especially on on blockchains, they end up in the same irrelevant graveyard where myspace ended up.
On Hive there are so many NPC's and lemmings willing to follow the masses and choose the quickest method to earn a penny. Even if it means the destruction of the platform that feeds them the smaller breadcrumbs, the more they continue these behaviors.
The biggest abusers on Hive are those who seek to control others, by means of spreading the cancer of greed. All these junk posts, AI or not, on how to get rich quick is like feeding a diabetic sugar so they don't starve.
Many of the hot posts are all garbage to me. The allure of the Midas gold brings people in, and it drives everyone away eventually when they see how the space has become less valuable for their time than it once was.
Cultivate the lands and communities. Dissolve material control. Develop legacies capable of transcending time. Utopia.
It seems to be a flaw with PoS. Many of us thought it had been the existence of the Ninja Coins that had been the problem, yet here we are again.
So what does this mean should I get out of this now???
That is not my feeling. My feeling is that the shift will swing towards the utility aspect of the token, in my opinion. So the value of HIVE may not be affected as much as its primary usage. For me the social media aspect of HIVE seems more under threat than using the blockchain as a game token for example.
So not to worry about them??....
If you feel it does not affect you personally then it does not seem like something to worry about. Such down voting wars are not new. People being driven off by others is not new. All part of the PoS madness unfortunately. If you don't feel affected and do not want to join in the debate then my advice would be to do your own thing and ignore the drama.
Ok great advice and moving on now...
P.S. You could put the link to yout Etsy shop in the url field of your profile. It would be interesting to check out.
How do I find my Etsy url as I am only using the app at this time and have nothing listed. As most of what I have is still somewhat unfinished.
Not that familiar with the site, though once you have some things listed then you should be able to find it with your browser and grab the url from the brower's location. Below is an example of a random seller:

Cool shop.
