Follow Friday: Out of Steam

The News

I added an extra coin to my chart this week. I am sure many people know the history of Hive, but others should read some history on how it came about. The 'legacy chain' Steemit has been pretty stagnant from what I have seen. A few people manage to get huge rewards on their posts, but there is no development going on. Since the fork they have made no effort to control their so-called stablecoin Steem Backed Dollars (SBD). It has been at $5-8 for ages, but just over a week ago it plummeted to about 10% of that. It has settled down there now at well below what it was supposed to be. I expect a lot of people are much worse off now. It is a while since $STEEM and $HIVE diverged so I wonder if this is the end for that platform. I think their witnesses are largely under the control of Justin Sun or whoever runs things now so it is not at all decentralised. Despite that it still has users, some of whom are exiles from Hive. Some post there and on Blurt where they are 'safe' from downvotes. The $BLURT price is way less than a cent with no significant trading going on. Note that $HBD is very stable, but that is down to people actively (and expensively) making that happen.

I think Hive should be open to people who give up on Steemit if they are willing to behave themselves. We need more active users. You do not have to like everyone here and probably will not anyway.

If you want more news about what is happening around Hive then I recommend the updates from @gadrian who finds all the tasty morsels.

The Dog House

This is a case I found myself. My script to find Brits found @thegreatmogul who has 'UK' on their profile, but has never posted in eight years. They do not have much HP, but I had a look at who they vote for and it seems to be just two accounts @zezozo and @mmidoaa. Neither of these is doing any comments, but they churn out several posts each day that are largely 'memes' taken from elsewhere. In some cases they are repeating these and we should all know that is a sin on Hive. One of the accounts does not seem to be claiming their rewards, but the other passes them on to another who cashes out. The sums involved are not huge, but it seems like cheating the system for profit whilst contributing nothing of value.

Maybe someone will decide to cancel out their meagre rewards. We cannot stop people posting, but we can prevent them earning like this.

The End

These are strange times for the world, but I hope everyone is doing okay. I think there are definite benefits from getting off the corporate social platforms that can be full of disinformation and intrusive ads. Hive is a haven for me, even with all its faults. If you can persuade your friends to move over then you can reduce your dependence on those hellholes.

Hive is a journey and you should make it a fun one.

This is my "Picked Post of the Week" from Hive, @steevc that I'll pimp at PYPT come Thursday, 6 March. I choose it because you so succinctly describe a brief history of Hive (oh, gawd, the drama) that brings it to be the community-owned decentralized platform it is today. It's perfectly written for those new or returning to the chain.

I love the gentlemanly call out that you make for a sketchy behavior for which we should all keep watch.

But, then OMG! You mentioned @andysporring, the Creative Work Hour Resident Composer and our work in the daily live sessions! Andy will loose his mind that he's already been discovered on Hive.

Congrats to @andysporring and many heart-felt thanks to you, @steevc, for mentioning our creative work.

Much love! 💗

I just do what I think is good for the community. There is so much good stuff on Hive, but we know the rewards do not always get to where they are deserved. That said, I know a lot of people would be happy just to get more engagement.

I hate it when I watch a podcast on Youtube and it's interrupted by ads. Of course, I could buy premium and not see any of them, but I don't want to do that either. Luckily, I don't have much contact with other traditional social platforms, except occasionally.

I've been using Brave for a while and I don't get ads in Youtube. I probably see less elsewhere and that's fine.

Thanks! I didn't know. I use Brave too, but also Firefox. But if Brave blocks YT ads, then I'll use Brave to watch YT.

I wasn't here for the fork, or any of the ensuing conflicts, I don't have any personal emotions about it.
If some Steem users have become persuaded that Hive is a better manifestation, it's not clear to me what the drawback would be.

The blockchain space is remarkably different than in 2020-2021, attention is diluted.

As a community there has to be a steady inflow of users - Blurt or Steemit users at the very least have a basic understanding of how our platform works.

It might make sense to present a sentiment of "Come Home to Hive".

The fork was certainly an 'interesting' time. Some people really fell out over it and keep bearing grudges. Others left over different disagreement or the 'Hive police'. You can find plenty of reports of Hive being run be a corrupt cabal, but I think most of that is exaggerated. As I have often said, Hive is not perfect, but it's generally better than the alternatives. There are people I would like to see return.

I'm sure everyone's experience varies. I've been active recently and digging into Hive, I do a lot of reading and listening. I've found I can interact well with anyone here if I assume the best of them, and assume they are trying to perpetuate Hive or the characteristics of Hive they value the most.

I don't expect to get on with everyone, but my experiences here have been mostly positive.

Those accounts are posting a load of shit, something will be done.

I bet there are many others. It's not like anyone was looking at it.

Hmm, we need some scripts to find others like these. I do check for comment self-voters sometimes.

Could look for frequent posters who never comment. It's so easy to set up an account that just recycles content. I found one the other day that re-posted an old Actifit post. My Brit-finder script picked it up.

Have a go at scripting it, that kind of content is always useful. Keep the bullshit to a minimum!

Thanks for the update! It seems there are people trying to game the system everywhere all the time. We need to stay vigilant!

There's plenty of it going on. I also found a case of someone copying an old post, but someone else already downvoted it. The scammer can keep creating new accounts for this.

I still wonder what folks are on steemit if there dont know its time to move out from that place. If there ever come to hive it wont even criticize them thats the beauty of hive

I’m finding it hard at the moment and have pulled back from a lot of the online stuff I’ve been involved with, so many platforms just aren’t any fun anymore. I feel like going totally offline for a year or more.

Or I drop everything but Hive!!! The vibe here is calm and collect for the most part.

I hope you'll stick with Hive, but you have to do what's best for you. I've cut back on some online stuff and do what I enjoy.

I defo think we should be accepting of steemians. We all came from there, it might just take some longer to accept!

I try to get along with people even if we disagree on some things. I know some are too far gone to return.

It's fine to disagree, in fact it's great to have different opinions. It seems a lot these days though that when you have a different opinion it rapidly devolves into name calling.

Getting to read the history of hive for the first time, though it was a long read but it was worth it. At least I now have an idea of how the blockchain came to be. Thanks for sharing

History matters :)

Yea, it does

The community-driven spirit of Hive truly shines through, and it's encouraging to see discussions about welcoming those seeking a more supportive environment.

Let's continue to foster creativity and engagement while keeping an eye on the challenges ahead. Thanks for sharing these insights!

I thought you are adding "Steam" token, so this gaming ecosystem but you speak about this Justin ecosystem?

I actually was over there asking if anyone is still active - some good people that got "fu...ed" to be honest by the fork (not everything was well done during this fork hence we lost a lot Koreans and Germans as of no reason) replied -they claimed to be the positive chain compared to Hive. The feed was in letters / languages I do not understand but seems some small communities do pretty fine, same went to Blurt but came back to Steemit - pretty niche but some seem to enjoy it (and there are some that are pretty smart and nice) - currently hard to get them over back to Hive it seems.
